Cupra Born: Electriying Performance Meets Practicality
The Cupra Born marks the Spanish brand's foray into the electric vehicle market, offering a compelling blend of sporty aesthetics and everyday usability. As Cupra's first all-electric model, the Born shares its underpinnings with the Volkswagen ID.3 but adds a dash of athletic flair.
The Born's exterior design is a head-turner, featuring sharp lines and copper accents that set it apart from its VW cousin. The front fascia sports an aggressive look, while the LED light bar stretching across the tailgate adds a modern touch. Available wheel sizes range from 18 to 20 inches, complementing the car's sporty stance.
Interior and Technology:
Step inside, and you're greeted by a minimalist cabin with a focus on sustainable materials. The recycled ocean plastic upholstery is a nice eco-friendly touch. A 12-inch touchscreen dominates the dashboard, offering crisp graphics and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration. However, the system's tendency to lag and crash is disappointing, as is the lack of physical controls for common functions like climate control.
Practicality:
Despite its sporty aspirations, the Born doesn't sacrifice utility. Rear passengers enjoy ample legroom and headroom, while the 385-liter boot offers decent cargo space for a compact EV. The flat floor in the rear adds to the spacious feel.
Powertrain and Performance:
The Born offers multiple battery options, with ranges spanning from 211 to 335 miles. Our test car featured the mid-level 58kWh battery, good for 263 miles of range, paired with a 204hp electric motor. Performance is brisk, with smooth acceleration perfect for urban environments and highway passing maneuvers alike.
Charging capabilities are impressive, with the Born supporting up to 170kW DC fast charging. This allows for a 10-80% charge in around 30 minutes when connected to a suitably powerful station.
Driving Dynamics:
On the road, the Born delivers a composed ride with accurate steering and good grip. The lowered sports suspension contributes to tidy handling, but it doesn't quite deliver the engaging driving experience one might expect from a performance-oriented brand like Cupra. Brake feel is also somewhat lacking, detracting from the sporty promise.
Verdict:
The Cupra Born is a well-rounded electric hatchback that successfully blends style, practicality, and performance. While it may not fully live up to its sporting pretensions, it offers a more dynamic package than many rivals in the compact EV segment. With competitive range, rapid charging capabilities, and a spacious interior, the Born makes a strong case for itself as a daily driver.
However, the laggy infotainment system and lack of physical controls for key functions are notable drawbacks. Despite these quibbles, the Cupra Born remains a solid choice for those seeking an electric vehicle with a dash of flair and a focus on practicality.
