It’s not just the color palette and keying. It’s also the lighting of the original shots and the shot composition; many scenes with backlight are shot with exposure filters that cause the outlines of characters to be blurred. You can see something similar in minority report. Combined with film grain, audiovisual design, shot composition, and the long takes, it makes a tone of surrealism and what I call “semiasleepness.” It’s a masterwork in representing storytelling visually in film.

Jump scares can genuinely scare you, but there is no comparison with creating an atmosphere of horror. I haven't seen the film, but just based on the scenes shown, I know I would be feeling a constant dread.
@Walamonga1313
@Walamonga1313 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. Jump scares are indeed that, scary. But they're usually forgettable, unless they're perfectly set up (for example the one in the first Silent Hill game in the school). However, atmospheric horror will keep you tense and disturbed. And you will remember that feeling of dread for a long time, especially if the horror concepts truly get to you.

I always felt psychological thrillers were way scarier than straight up horror, at least in American films. Ex, silence of the lamb and Seven were way scarier to me than Halloween, exorcist, conjuring, saw, etc.
@ginamcgill7054
@ginamcgill7054 Жыл бұрын
Strongly disagree at Exorcist's inclusion with those "not scary" movies. David Fincher owes a debt to directors like William Friedkin. It's a movie that is about more than just possession, it's riddled with guilt, oppression, absent father figures, abandonment. It's slow pace, the quietude, the richness of the cinematography are corrupted by sequences fully intended to upend everything - the safety of the family home, a mother's ability to protect, a priest's faith, the innocence of childhood. And in the end there's the suggestion of absolution through sacrifice. Brilliant movie.

I might even argue the technicality that "thriller" is a misnomer and these films explore terror, horror's evil twin. Horror is seeing the monster, being chased by the monster, battling the monster. Terror is not knowing where or what the monster is, only that it is. And that it could attack from anywhere at any time. Horror is fight or flight. Terror is anxiety. Which is what these films capture so well.

the scene you went thru was probably my favorite from the film. what is so profound about it to me is, even with how violent and shocking the initial shot of his wife hanging is, whats possibly most horrific is his wife asking him whats wrong, making the audience question Takabe's psyche. the juxtaposition of a disturbing and painful silence with a familiar loud drone of a blender all the more subverts our expectation.

Spikima Movies does so much more than analyzing films of different genres. In some way, Spikima lets us take the the moment to really immerse in the film’s overall visuals, atmosphere and ambiance. In general, movies are more than just art. It is a reflection of our own society, the connections we form, philosophical questionings, and so much more. Directors have their own way of crafting a particular film. They go below surface level to get their messages across. Some may or might even underestimate the power and impact of films and filmmaking. There’s an immense amount of complexity that goes into making films. It’s so much more than actors portraying their roles onscreen, incorporating editing, sound effects, visuals, etc.

It's a trope of being hypnotized that a specific sound triggers the action under hypnosis. And also during the process, the hypnotizer tries to get the person to ignore all other things and focus on their voice. So the playing with isolated sounds, and repetitive sounds like the washing machine reflects those things about hypnosis. The shot of the water spill spreading across the floor was symbolic of the slow creep of hypnosis. Like the scene in Get Out. It was the slow constant stirring of a cup of tea that was the method.

I love this film because it prompts me to revisit it from time to time to reflect on some of its aspects. For example, one thing that intrigues me is when Takabe's friend, who is a psychiatrist, says that a hypnotist cannot change the morals of the hypnotized person. When I first heard this dialogue, I wondered what else the hypnotist could be doing to make people commit murders without turning them evil. Throughout the movie, you don't get a direct answer, but I believe a simple explanation is inferred: the hypnotized person doesn't "commit murder," but rather performs a sequence of simple actions, which individually cannot be labeled as good or bad. The hypnotized person doesn't seem to understand the outcome of their actions, which ultimately results in a murder. During the interview, the cop said that he didn't really like his partner, whom he shot dead earlier. What I understand is that a simple trigger, such as having a negative thought about someone, which is itself harmless, could lead the hypnotized person to use a weapon. We know that the hypnotic state uses a trigger, such as a sound, a command, or a vision, but maybe a simple thought is just as effective at transforming, for instance, apathy into murder. We are led to consider a seemingly insignificant thought as something much more powerful, capable of intoxicating someone's mind if that person is under the right spell.

this was a great breakdown of all the elements that made a spooky setup. Have you watched Lake Mungo (2008) I think it is the best horror film in my opinion. Will love it if you give it a watch and make a video on it.

Lake Mungos one of my all time favorites just because how tragic the horror of it is! Would love to see him talk about tbh

I appreciate the thought put into this synopsis and tend to agree with it and some of the supporting comments. Jump scares to me are low hanging fruit, sure you are scared/startled, but they go away fast and have no staying power. Unlike films and scenes as you described in this Cure. Scenes, filmings and atmosphere that get stuck in your sub conscious and never leave.

Hey Spiki, impressive work as always. You somehow managed to make your review as oppressive as the movie, which induced a real sense of dread in me when I watched it. Now I only wanna watch it again... The soundscape is very Lynchean, eh? All the best 🙂

I know it’s quite a short thing to look at, but I really think you consider the short film “fauve”. The actors are amazing and I would like you to explore how it makes the film so uncomfortable. I love your vids, keep up the good work
