Unicorn Overlord is a new Tactics RPG coming to the Switch, Playstation, and Xbox on March 8th. It features unique real-time tactics, unit building, and a great story told in a beautifully animated style. Unicorn Overlord is reminiscent of classics like Ogre Battle, and more modern tactical rpgs like Triangle Strategy and Tactics Ogre Reborn. Unicorn Overlord out here reminding people that Ogre Battle games existed and they were awesome. This is the spiritual successor to Ogre Battle and it evolves it in so many interesting ways that it is an absolute triumph. Seeing how many people were unaware of this genre of strategy game is wild but I suppose Ogre Battle has fallen into obscurity over the past couple decades which is a real shame. Thank you Vanillaware for reviving it in style!

Yeah, I had kinda forgot about oger battle till I saw another KZfaqr mention in it. I played some a looong time ago when rentals were still a thing! Lol

This game is considerably deeper and more strategy based than ogre battle. It has similarities to multiple other strategy RPG's but it is legitimately it's own new thing. Dragon Force from the saturn is probably the closest thing I can think of .... and it isn't that close lol.

Ogre Battle: Person of Lordly Calibre was one of the best and coolest games I ever played and now, 25 years after that game released I'm finally seeing another game that might scratch that same itch and I as excited as I was as a young teen when that game came out.

Nice video! I've been enjoying the demo quite a bit (thanks almost entirely to the auto-pause feature). I still like Symphony of War's turn-based approach to squad movement better, but this game has a lot of cool elements to the battles and non-combat mechanics that help recommend it. (Plus, you know, it's gorgeous.)

Also, just in case anybody is wondering how growth rates are misleading, every character of the same level and the same class are going to have the exact same stats. Unlike other strategy games, stat growth is not random. So essentially their growth rate is their stats set. The only way to alter their stats from another unit will be based on the equipment that they have equipped. This will make it way easier to have more control over your units. Stats unlike fire emblem where it totally is random

Great overview! I played a bit of the demo, but didn’t get too involved with it. Everything I needed to know you covered and I’m 100% sold on this now.

Haha. Glad you covered it. I remember mentioning it to you. Loving the demo so far. This game moved up from i'm iffy because it's open world/lots exploration and fluff (mini-games, item hunting, etc) to day 1 buy (or at least buy on the 1st weekend day). the demo calmed all my fears and hesitations. this game imo has GOTY written all over it. reminds me of Larian's masterclass BG3. it's done with love and polish with tons of content. and the best part is no microtransactions and respect's the busy player's time by allowing skipping battle animations and carrying over your demo save to the real game. So hyped! yeah more vids on this game. would love to discuss with you though i know it may block your gloomhaven scheduled vids.

Yeah, I had similar thoughts before the demo too, but definitely picking this one up and making content on it! Honestly, I'll probably dive deep into this one and put GH on the back burner again. The game is a little old now so that content tends to lag, but I think there will be a lot of interest in Unicorn Overlord that will hopefully give me a bit of a boost, lol.

@@89Games yeah best to ride this train. you can always revisit gloomhaven once the hype/content for this game has died down. i still like the GH content though and as i've told you before, there are games i'm fine if you return to once in a while because those games are more "timeless." the kind of games thats fun to go back to and re-play again after some time has passed due to all the build/teamcrafting possible or when enough patches/updates have dropped like tactics ogre reborn, triangle strategy and gloomhaven. on my own runs in gloomhaven, i've already maxed out scoundrel, brute, cragheart, spellweaver, mindthief (my fave of the starting classes along with hatchet), hatchet, voidwarden, red guard, demolitionist, nightshroud (my fave of the unlockable classes), berserker and doomstalker. will probably play plagueherald and sunkeeper next. only one i havent unlocked is beast tyrant (i dont really use control ally actions).

@@TheRobversion1 yeah for sure. On GH, sunkeeper is one of my favorites! There is an excellent combo with the saw class that basically breaks the game lol. My friend and I did it in the board game.

@@89Games whats the combo? looking at sawbones as well. not a fan of summoner, tinkerer, soothsinger and elementalist.

The sunkeeper has an active ability that gives you one shield for -1 move which in the board game version at least could be upgrade to give 2 shields, then the Sawbones gets a couple of cards that can give permanent shield to another character. At one point I was running around with four shields and nothing could touch me. The combo basically breaks the game.

Vanillawares new game right? Not familiar with this genre of game but I do love alot of their previous titles. I might try it

Yep! Really well done with what looks to be a great story and art so far like many of their other games. I'd say it's fairly beginner friendly to anyone not familiar with the genre too.
