When I was growing up in England in the 1970’s and though the 1980’s in particular, there was an almost palpable fear that a nuclear exchange could break out between the superpowers at almost any time.

It caused me and many others around at the time to wonder was there a way to stop a missile attack but to be honest there was very little you could do. If you lived in a big city or near a military base, there was nothing to stop an ICBM or Intercontinental Ballistic missile once it was on its way and with the 4 minute warning we would have in the UK, you might as well have one last game of missile command and hope for a quick end.
Roll on 35+ years and although we now live in a time of where the threat from nuclear attack is much less, it’s still present, even if it may have moved to a different area of the globe.
So, with the advancement of technology, can we stop a missile attack now, once it’s been launched
Snippet of SWDennis KSP - Intercontinental Ballistic Missile - ICBM. • KSP - Intercontinental... used to show multiple warheads on re-entry.

in practice only 1 missile was ever designed to have more than 10 warheads, and that was a variant of the Soviet SS-18, aptly named "Satan" by NATO. It was redesigned, adding additional decoys to its warhead bus to replace some of the warheads.

@@EuanWhitehead in its destructive power, yes. But at the same time nuclear weapons have effectively prevented a world war for over 75 years now. And of course the moment it's known something is possible, someone's going to do it, so 'banning nuclear weapons' isn't going to do any good. We effectively tried that already with the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, and at least 6 nations built nuclear weapons since, with several more suspected of having tried or planned to (Argentina, East Germany,Taiwan, and some think Japan and West Germany as well).

@@nunyabeeswax303 Obviously hiding under school desk isnt going to help you if you are within the blast radius as the building supporting your desk may be destroyed. At greater distances from ground zero where buildings will still stand, but may be damaged, hiding under a desk, in a closet, or in a hallway, away from windows, can and does protect from injury death from projectiles such as broken glass, branches etc. A little common sense could be applied here. People injured from flying projectiles from the Chelyabinsk meteor were 100's of kms away from the epicenter, most injuries were secondary blast effects from flying glass debris. There was in fact a teacher that saw the flash and quickly told her pupils to "duck and cover" saving many of them from injury as the resultant blast wave came minutes later and blew all the windows in. This was an approx. 430 kiloton explosion from a 10,000 tonne meteor.

I just realized something: if we had an amazing defense system that could kill the missile/warheads a significant percentage of the time, then we probably wouldn't know. It would be top secret until nukes _had_ to be used, so that we could stop the enemy's missiles (because they don't know we're capable of it), leaving our missiles to destroy them only. We have the incentive to not mention it.
@michaireneuszjakubowski5289

There IS an incentive to mention it - knowing your strike would be way less effective than the counterstice would probably make aggression apear more costly, or else require a truly massive strike capability to overpower (maintaining which costs - a lot). Of course, this is mainly a factor for those powers whose aims are mostly defensive.

Oh man! Seeing those on the TV back then and then hearing those tones now... still gives me the shivers that we were briefed on what to do if a nuke exploded and how to survive. And that we believed that we could be killed at any moment in our normal lives and not feel a thing while dying or die a slow painful death due to radiation sickness. And that at any moment, if we saw a bright light in the day that wasn't there before, that it'd be the end of everything for us and our families.

Anson Zhao, look up "nuclear fallout" or search for information about the Fukushima nuclear disaster which resulted in untold millions of gallons of radioactive water being dumped into the Pacific Ocean. Just imagine how far ocean currents can move radioactive particles (eventually around the entire globe). Also consider ocean life like fish becoming irradiated, then caught by fisherman and eaten by the public. There are many many ways for radiation to travel from one place to another.

LZ129 Brazil Not sure why you had to stoop to insults. Cute though. I was using an analogy, not making a claim about the direct vicinity of Fukushima. It was an analogy about the relative size of Fukushima’s radiation leak compared to the size of the ocean. We’re clearly looking at and reading different sources. Time for me to start reading more research articles. Ps. Consider NOT being a complete dick when talking about important topics. You can make a point without taking a shit on someone 👍🏻

Einstein was specifically prohibited by the US govt from being part of the Manhattan Project that developed the first working atomic bombs. Einstein wrote a letter to President Roosevelt in 1939 that helped convince the US govt to start the Manhattan Project, and some of his physics theories were used during the bomb development, but Einstein never actually worked on the development of the atomic bombs. The head scientist in the Manhattan Project was a British physicist called Robert Oppenheimer.

We keep hearing about what a threat there is to satellites from orbital debris. That suggests to me that the best defense against an ICBM would be some kind of explosion that would quickly release huge numbers of tiny, dense objects. Make the original trajectory opposite to the incoming missiles. (That's a real problem, right there. They could attack with subs, from any direction.) The real show-stopper is probably nuclear-tipped SLCMs. Only a few minutes of warning, and one of those never leaves the atmosphere,. in fact even following the terrain. How can you ever stop that?

ICBMs are now limited to a single warhead, down from 3 warheads per Minuteman 3 missile. Each warhead from American missiles are 450 kilotons at most. The most powerful American bomb is now the B83 gravity bomb that comes with 1.2 megatons of freedom. Gone are the days of the multi-megaton nuclear weapons. The Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles are now likited by number of missile tubes and total warheads. Each missile now carries about 4 warheads, out of the 14 possible on each SLBM.

@@johnballs1352 The official statement under Trump is to hide all these stats. Previous administrations for the 10 years prior had total tactical and strategic warhead numbers out in the open. There are enough people who work on these systems everyday that confirm the exact warhead count on each missile.

This technical video explains some extreme limitations: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bqqUpbFkqLHeaWQ.html&ab_channel=AtomicTestsChannel Summary and implications: If the attacker decides to detonate one of the nuclear bombs the others become undetectable because of visible, infrared, radar and radio interference. Perhaps the delicate sensors of the KKV (kinetic kill vehicle) get destroyed directly. Nuclear bombs however are quite able to survive the in-space-nuclear-explosion and continue through. So KKVs could never stop a serious ICBM attack, no matter how accurate, reliable or plentiful your KKVs are. The KKVs are a complete waste of money. They are super expensive since they require extreme technology and constant readiness. They only have value if you actually will get attacked with ICBMs, but in that case they still cannot protect you. Nuclear weapons do have value even if you don't use them, because they deter attackers. Actually KKVs could be even worse than a complete waste of money: They may make the attacker think it could be all-right if they use nuclear weapons (since maybe they won't destroy the world, maybe they don't have to live with the guild, maybe the attacked country won't retaliate if they manage to destroy the ICBMs), making it less likely they refuse orders and do destroy the world. Also, the KKVs are designed for use in vacuum. They will not stop bombs or missiles fired via airplanes, which also have a long range.

Not effective in real time attack as well as developing ICBMs are being made at super sonic speed now even at burning faze such as russias satan 2 that is impossible to intercept even with all these techs mentioned in the video you just cant stop a hypersonic missile even in earth not to mention on space also russia is now replacing it's old icbms with satan 2 so I think M.A.D is still and will be held for along time

@RB747domme
@RB747domme 5 жыл бұрын
Charles Yuditsky although you are correct in theory, and in fact I agree with a lot of what you said, what you have to remember is that what the enemy knows you know, and what you know the enemy knows. This espionage loop, is known as counter viability (which I'm sure you know, as a knowledgeable person, but I wanted to state it anyway, for anyone reading this who might not know). Counter viability, results in a situation where the enemy won't just target a range of cities, they will ramp the number of missiles to the most important target (s). So if we accept that Russia might be the opponent, just for the sake of argument, then the fact that they know that the US would defend the most important cities to protect the economy and executive command structures with all it's might, then they would target the likes of Washington, New York, Los Angeles, and the other most populated and important economic zones and industrial centres with 70 or 80% of its arsenal. I believe that they would knock out the east coast and the west coast and Washington with the majority of it's nuclear arsenal, with the rest going to the most populated and industrial centres in the middle. They would also knockout the US utilities, water supplies, the Great Lakes, with dirty bombs, and a fair few neutron bombs over the lower atmosphere to create the most EMP waves to knock out the electricity systems as well. With 6-8,000 nuclear warheads at their disposal, and with the defence systems built in to the delivery systems, I think that the US would be lucky to knock out more than 50 to 70% of incoming warheads in an all out nuclear war. If you throw in the fact that alliances would almost certainly be formed in a war, so that the West (including nuclear armed countries like the UK, France, and Israel) would be joining forces to throw it's extra thousand or so warheads towards the opposition, and then throw in the thousand or so warheads coming in from China... Not to mention India and Pakistan throwing their 12 warheads into the mix as well 😉.. which might land somewhere perhaps, killing 30 or 40 people.. .. then you have to factor in world economic status following the aggression in the coming weeks and months. New York and London as trading posts with such importance placed on financial derivatives and stocks, alongside damage to Singapore and Japan which would be targeted almost certainly in order to increase the damage to the western economy, then you are left with not just the damage to hard infrastructure in the West, and it's ability to survive physically, with the radiation poisoning, damage to water supplies, coldness and starvation following food supply & utility collapse.. .. and you have a scenario where almost all of the Western seaboard of the United States, almost all of the Eastern seaboard, with the most populated cities destroyed, and another fair few people - say 30 or 40 million (at least) in the internal regions, leaving maybe 60 million killed in the initial blast wave, and another 40 million over the coming year from radiation and starvation, along with the almost permanent damage to the financial economy, the complete collapse of the stock exchange and financial resources and Banks, with other Western powers in alliance, which in the normal way would be helping to keep the US economy alive - also mostly destroyed by hundreds of nuclear warheads.. ALONG WITH - the general fact that all of the Western missiles (including 1000 or so warheads from UK and France which would have been counter launched against the opponent, with a fair few detonated on major cities in Russia and China to go with the ones launched by the USA - and the resultant nuclear winter worldwide would pretty much decimate a large swathe of the world's population and economies over the next 2 to 3 years. That would do a massive amount of damage to the rest of what is left of the United States of America. Could it survive? I don't know. Would it survive? Again, I don't know. Do I want to find out? Almost certainly never. Anyway, it's good chatting with you. Peace bro!
