This is a great way of dealing with the fat end of a coin ring without using a hydraulic press. Shape both sides and create a classic arched band. Really adds that final touch to an already sweet ring.

Made my first walking liberty silver half dollar ring today. The clad coin rings looked good, but man making the silver coin rings are what get you hooked! It's not prefect, but I'm proud to wear it. Thank you and Thanks for your videos. Chris M.

Way to get it done Brother. The first coin ring (and you will make more) is the most important ring you will make. I still wear the first ring I ever made. To me, it holds the most value
@marksctm7 жыл бұрын
Yeah your right about the making more part. Harbor Freight a mile away, found a coin shop 4 or 5 miles away with unlimited scrap coins. " Melt Value" Now I'm gonna have a beer and try to explain to my self, why I spent what I did to make a ring out of a quarter. It is addictive, but I love it, and I look at my pocket change religiously now. Thanks! Chris M.

Tried one of these rings last year and was irritated by the raised side and couldn't get it to co-operate. What a fantastic idea! The only tool that you used that I didn't have at the time was your imagination...so I subbed and now heading back downstairs to try it again. Thanks! Beautiful Rings!
@KurtAnsa10 жыл бұрын
maybe if you file away the ridge around the rings edge before doing anything else there might not be any raised edge to worry about.- give it a try.
@cattmann140510 жыл бұрын
kurt Ansa Thanks Kurt! I think what was causing the problem was not heat treating the coin as I went. The more I hammered, the more the ring was work hardened and not willing to conform to the mandrel. The pvc also helped to drive the ring further with less deformity . I still file the edge, but now only for cosmetic touch-up.

Another great video! The vise is actually the method I've been using. I didn't have an arbor press, but had a vice. It works well! I was thinking about mounting a vice vertically so that it's easier to align. My last half dollar ended up too small, but a few hits with the PVC pipe on the mandrel opened it up without losing the curved look.

Great video. However, I'd set the vise up at a 90 degree tilt from how yours is so, so that the vise heads are top and bottom so that gravity isn't always wanting to tip the ring off center. Just thinking. Nonetheless, great advice. Thanks again!

Tried it with one of the state quarter rings and wasn't successful. Basically the ring kept wanting to distort, as in become an oval instead of ring. I used it on a copper ring that is thinner and with much care was able to get a beautiful domed ring. Thanks for the video.

I have to agree with some of the comments below. Use an arbor press instead of a vise. It can be very tricky getting the ring centered "just right" and if you're off a little bit the ring will be destroyed. [edit] Maybe destroyed isn't the right word but you'll be doing a lot of work to get it back to the shape that you want.

Hi. Thanks for posting these videos. I saw in a different video that you annealed the ring to make it softer and easier to work with. Can you harden it again when you are finished shaping it ? Will the hardening process be too hot and damage the ring? Is hardening it again even necessary? I would like to make a ring and have it last a long time without slowly wearing the surface designs off. Thanks
@pabloricardodetarragon26499 жыл бұрын
Roger Butler Silver (some other metals) will harden by strain while working it it, so no need of a heat treatment. Besides, you can't harden silver and copper by heat like the aluminum 6 thousand series.
