Who said that the CG Method couldn’t be followed and CG Friendly Products can’t be used on wavy hair? Wavy hair is the envy of many, yet it is sometimes left stranded between straight and curly hair with few care tips and methods. Most Wavies who try the CG method are usually left disappointed and stumped as their results vary from curly heads’ experience.
Even though wavy hair may seem like just another variant of curly hair, it requires a slightly different routine. The Curly Girl method for beginners is a good start.
Before we get into the nuances of the method and usage of CG-friendly practices and our celebrated range of Curl Up products, a tip for beginners is to ‘Clarify’ first. Here’s a quick run-down of the same:
Clarifying refers to removing the existing build-up of silicones and other products on your scalp and hair from years of product application and usage. This is done by using a clarifying shampoo that contains sulfates but NO SILICONES!
Compared to curlies, wavies need to clarify more often as sebum travels down waves more efficiently than curls, thus weighing them down. Also, product build-up occurs more in wavy than curly hair. Do this step once or twice every 3-4 weeks to keep your scalp clean and ready for the goodness of the rest of the CG steps.
While the detailed usage of CG-friendly products includes pre-poo, shampoo, conditioner, leave-in cream, and a curl-defining gel, here’s how to achieve it in three easy steps.
Let’s get started!
Cleanse:
Cleanse your scalp with a mild sulfate and silicone-free cleanser such as our Curl Up Moisturizing Shampoo that happens to be a great option of CG Friendly shampoo in India to get rid of the grime on your scalp while retaining natural oils. Curl Up moisturizing shampoo contains argan oil and chia seeds extracts packed with antioxidants and vitamin E to refresh and renew your scalp while maintaining natural moisture.
A pro tip is to use the resulting lather to clean the length of your hair by squeezing and not vigorously rubbing, as this causes breakage and frizz to be wavy and curly hair. Wash away the shampoo gently and get ready to condition.
Condition:
It’s not just curls that need to be quenched with moisture; waves do too! Apply a generous amount of light but moisturizing conditioner using the Praying Hands method, starting from the crown of your head to the ends of your waves. Then detangle using a wide-toothed comb. The Squish should follow the Condish method, which involves reapplying a little more conditioner and scrunching the curls. This will ensure that you get good clumping along with a better curl definition. Rinse lightly post conditioning.
Emulsify the conditioner between your palms before applying it in sections of your hair. Leaving your conditioner on your hair for five minutes goes a long way in infusing your waves with moisture. Ensure that you detangle your hair while conditioning using a wide-toothed comb, and feel free to add more water for more ‘slip’ while detangling. Start detangling from the ends and move towards the roots. Don’t wash off the conditioner entirely, but lightly wash away using more water and squishing your waves for more defined wave patterns.
Now, let’s move to the fun part - Styling!
Styling:
Now that you have a clean and nourished head of hair get styling! Different waves require different products while styling, but investing in good CG-friendly products like the Curl Up Defining Cream will help style and hold your waves in place. Opt for a mousse or gel cast to hold your waves in place if you have lighter waves. Try finger coiling your hair with your leave-in product for more defined waves and hold.
While applying styling products to wavy hair, remember to use the Praying Hands method and not the raking method to prevent clumps from breaking and disrupting your curl pattern. This should be followed by flipping your hair over and scrunching it up gently to preserve the clumps without shrinkage. The ‘squelch’ noise is an indication that the hair is appropriately wet for the stylers to spread evenly and work well. If you do not hear this satisfying noise, spray some water on your hair and scrunch again.
Style your hair in sections and smooth down wet frizz using more product and water; you will notice an evident wave pattern during this step. Another pro-tip is to flip your hair back and part your waves the way you want it to stand once dry. You can also clip up sections at the roots for more volume and bounce.
Proceed to gently squeeze out the extra water using a cotton tee or a microfiber towel; NO harsh terry towels or rubbing here! You can further air-dry or diffuse your waves for ultimate definition and bounce.
Once your hair is completely dry, you can fluff out or scrunch your cast for soft, easy waves that will last for days! Cheers, Curlies, and Happy Wash Day!
