Tom Curren has such a beautiful style, for his 1st wave ever at J Bay, that was incredible, ive watched this so many times

Curren never has a moment of struggle nor the look of unplanned positioning. Not even the great Kelly Slater has half the style that this man has. No one comes close to the consistent look of ease that this man showed when riding waves.

I grew up in SB , same age and surfed with him at rincon, at 14 he was blowing minds.

1:25 that bottom turn to carve to stall to barrel was poetry in motion, just beautiful.

Incomparable. Curren glide Carving Power hacks and speed flow extenuation bottom turns are pure Beauty. Jordy had another Ten in that Heat I thought was way better.

When Jordy lived in Newport Beach, I was in the water a couple of times when he was surfing River Jetties. He could throw buckets! But yeah, I gotta go with Curren. He has this flow and still throw buckets. Saw TC a few times at the OP Pro.

Curren's wave is my favorite of all time. Jordy is right there. Curren is a big influence on Jordy and it shows at J-Bay.

Both are realy amazing, but Curren waves as more impressive. It´s a masterpiece of surfing.

i was the guy he sprayed on the first carve…with the different colored arms black body wetsuit…was there for 2mths before and after they left…the place is amazing that month they were there it pumpd…curren franky derek amazing time…glad to have been a participant💪🏾🤘🏾

Curren was so good then. I'd love to see a 26 year old Curren surf against the top pros of today.

JS pumps most every turns, except the last one. Pumps in turns and when in drive / gliding the wave... TC doesn't, it's all in, and only, one movement linking all manuvers, and that's with speed, flow and style.

Jordey has power which is great , but Curren has power, speed and flow. Curren is the style master

It just seems like it is so effortless for Curren. Dude is on another level and looks better riding waves than the "aerial boys" of today

Tom Currens first wave at Jbay was actually filmed by Thomas Desoto, Sonny Millers best friend. Desoto was responsible for all the shots from land, where as Sonny was in the water with his camera and water housing, getting all the barrel shots for the first movie, Searching For Tom Curren.

Tom's wave appeared more naturally surfed and personified the pure thrill and absolute excitement most surfers experience and try to express (also two clean tubes) where as Jordy was far more calculated and his turns so polished. Depends what floats ya boat really.

Curren is seamless - look at the silkly-smooth railwork through each turn seperated by his unrivalled bottom turn connecting each turn - timeless, smooth, perfect timing. The late great Sonny Miller said it best: "Speed, Power, Flow - flawless rail work" - no one matches this I think; barring KS.

Pretty incredible... I would love to see how Curren would do on Jordy's board (and visa versa). Having surfed through the 90's, I can say that the standard potato chip was just a harder board to surf. It was thinner and narrower and required added length to obtain the same volume found in a board ridden about the same height of the surfer. I love both clips and they are equally amazing for their respective time periods.

2 totally different types of surfing but both absolutely incredible and in perfect rhythm with the long running rights.And jordy so good at a young age as well.

Curren All Day!!!!

Curren’s flow was graceful and efficient, not a wasted motions. Jordy looks like he is working hard in every section. Just compare the use of the bottom turn for the setup.

Curren. By a mile for me.. it’s the bottom turns. There is intent in every position Curren puts himself in on a wave. Jordy is a bit choppy at the bottom. Every move Curren makes is both a maneuver and the perfect set up for the next. It must be so fun to be able to surf like he does.

In Endless Summer II Bruce Brown states that Tom is magic in the water. Says it all.

They both crushed it. Different styles.. one was competing and one was probably just blown away at how good that wave is.

A few legends have done this other than our prodigal son, Marco from l j did the same as well because when you are faced w that for the first title it doesn’t matter to such creatures of absolute style... that’s how they got there with pure froth, pure pure froth. Blessed to have a lil of that feelin at the queen once and it’s one that’s instantly etched in your mind. A good first one is a definite thing of beauty.

Curren no doubt about it, he surfed that first wave with less than the half of advances of the design of boards that Jordy enjoyed at 2014... Jordy is one of my favorites, he is is so great, but never better than Curren

I can’t believe how rarely it gets mentioned Tom’s style is in every modern day pro surfers. Put Ethan Ewing split screen with Tom curren and tell me that isn’t uncanny. It’s almost identical.

Curren looks like he was born to surf. Jordy looks very ungainly. He has power turns and tricks, sure. Though Id rather watch Tom pump down the line the entire wave.

The only person I think I would add with these two would be John John, his big top to bottom power carves are unmatched. But yeah, the wave by Tom Curren here is poetry in motion, first wave non the less.

Two flawless rides. But I'll have to deduct 1 point from Jordy for wearing a grey wetsuit. And I'll have to deduct 2 points from Curren for his pink suit. So Jordy is the winner.

Currens wave tubes more,Jordys on a more optimal board and his maneuvers are better but i think the standard has progressed.

It’s all about the bottom turn, not the top turn....Curren’s rail lines are some of the longest and smoothest you will ever see. No one surfs like that anymore.

You can't compare the two. Curran's surfing is everything that the WSL's judging criteria mandates. Speed, Power and Flow. In my opinion Jordy reaches every criteria that is asked of him. The only difference is that was Curran's first wave ever at J Bay. Not to mention Curran is much smoother between his turns and utilizing equipment he's never ridden before like he's ridden it is whole life. Jordy has surfed J-bay many times previously. So you can compare the two as far as the WSL's requirements are concerned but the surfing itself is Worlds Apart.
