🔅Welcome🔅
My name is Niki. I am a former high school chemistry & biology public school teacher turned homeschool mom of 4 kiddos. We are a secular homeschooling family, with a laid back schooling style. I'm a busy WAHM who just tries to stay afloat some days. But we would never change a thing!
I would love to get to know you better down in the comments, and I hope you'll stay awhile and chat ❤️

We thought about using beast academy and the way they set up their assessment was challenging to figure out where to even start 🤣 like my son didn’t know things in 3A but flew past 3C. It didn’t make sense in my head so I found something else but I think the comic style would have been right up his alley.

I feel the same. My daughter loves graphic novels, so I thought this would be a perfect fit. But as someone with a pretty extensive math background (chemistry), I just did not understand the layout and why the introduced concepts when they did. I wanted us to love it so bad. We just didn't.

Loved how you separated by subject! And it's so weird that you're the third family, this week, I've heard AAR/AAS didn't work!

I'm so glad you found that helpful. I'm an organizer. LOL. I'm hearing it more and more too. I think it is a solid program, and when there were not as many option is was a popular choice. But now that there are more programs to choose from, people are realizing there might be a better fit for them. It's not at all bad and I still recommend giving it a try.

Hi! Thanks for another great video. Couple things it made me wonder about... Are you still liking Pinwheels? How's it going with Quill? So far All About Reading seems to be "boring" in our family as well. I found an awesome deal on Logic of English Foundations A & B so I went for it. Do you have any experience with that? Maybe I should look back through your videos lol. I'll do that. I am just afraid it will be a similar experience to AAR but we'll see. My hesitation with Pinwheels is it just looks like a lot. Maybe not but that's the impression I get. Thanks for all your input!!

Sorry for the delay in response. It has been a crazy few weeks. I hope you got a chance to look back in the videos. I have a comparing AAR, Logic of English, and Pinwheels! (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aZ92YJWKnNDeqJc.html) We did use Logic of English for a few years. It is a great program. We liked it much more than AAR, but in the end I love Pinwheels more. I can totally understand your impression of it being a lot. And in all fairness, it IS a lot when you are printing and prepping! But I do not feel like it is too much when teaching it at all. It is laid out to give you plenty of time to work through activities. And of course if you do feel like it is too much you can always skip some activities. But it has been the most well thought out, engaging, productive curriculum I have used so far for teaching reading. And even better it includes spelling and grammar all in one! It is my number one choice. I will have some videos on Pinwheels 3 and 4 coming out in the next few months. Hope this was helpful. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for watching!

What would you suggest for math if you have a hard time teaching it? I'm teaching 1st grade this year so it's easy least, but i was looking forward to using Teaching Textbooks because I don't want to mess up my children's future math understanding by teaching it to them.

Math U See! Mr. Demme does all the teaching for you! We really love the way he teaches concepts as well (from a former Chemistry teacher who used a ton of math). Beast Academy is another one that has online lessons, but I would recommend starting one or two levels below where you think. Some of the questions are very challenging in my opinion. But I knew several people who love it.

I feel you on the Beast academy. I have 1B and 1C and I’m literally just going to use them as extra if I need it. Math U See is much easier for us even though it’s boring.

It's just to intense for us! I wanted to love it, but didn't. Try skipping a level in Math U See. With the review pages, you should get to anything you may have missed. Both of my girls are about a half year ahead, and I feel like it is the perfect amount of challenging to keep it interesting without being overwhelming. We may have to pause and review a concept, but if you have the toolbox you can easily generate review worksheets. This system is working wonderfully for us.

I feel iffy on AAR/AAS. We are on level 2. My daughter is reading well but she doesn't love it. We skip yhe fluency sheets and practice sheets, but she still gets an attitude when I pull it out. I know kids don't always love things, but it is frustrating

That is similar to how my kids were. I much prefer Pinwheels or even Logic of English for learn to read programs. If she is reading well, you may consider looking into Brave Writer. My older daughter loves it!

We love story of the world and I heard that it’s a secular curriculum!!! We use the audio version and my daughter loves it!!! I’ve not heard it tho as my older kids listen together and I trust it so they do it independently!!! We don’t do school at home!!! We’ve never used teaching textbooks as it doesn’t sound right!!! Idk why!!! We are looking for a way of teaching spelling!!!

Story of the World is non-religious which is slightly different than secular. Many people love it, and I'm so glad it is a great fit for your homeschool. I love that there are so many options. We just didn't love it. Some people love Teaching Textbooks, but it just wasn't a good fit for us either. Too slow. Thanks for watching and commenting! From one enthusiastic exclamation point user to another! LOL!
