In this episode we make a set of custom car mirrors for the Volvo Canadian project. There isn't an aftermarket or OEM solution to get mirrors on this car that I like. You know what happens next - I build them.

If you haven't got anything planned for the next three months you could re-make the shells in carbon. With a nice glossy clear coat! That would look lovely next to the stainless!

I think powder coating the mirror body and ring silver would look best. Remember, the side mounted mirrors are not for seeing what's behind you (that's the job of the mirror mounted inside the car, commonly called the "rear view mirror"). The side mounted mirrors are for seeing what's beside you in your blind spot. 🙂 That's a nice P1800... Simon Templar would be proud.

I would probably paint the case (in body color) and play with the idea of polishing the ring around the glass. I wouldn't worry too much about oxydation: there are cars (like the Caterham Super 7) with bare aluminium body panels, airplanes with bare aluminium body panels, bare polished aluminium wheels, etc. A bit of polish once a year and I reckon they'll stay shiny. *But* if you fear the oxydation, you could always nickel plate them: it's fairly accessible in a home shop and will give a finish close to the polished stainless of the base and chrome of the window trim.

Yup - one of the advantages of not actually doing this for a living is that I can take my time. I like to finish projects (I've also failed a few times - so I know how that feels). I've never been quite this far (restorations sure, but nothing like this before). The 1800 is only a restoration with a few upgrades. My Canadian is mostly an engineering/learning exercise and I'm really glad nobody is pushing for it to be done.

Nice work, looks great! I am pretty sure that's pure EN AW-1050 aluminium; I'd look into anodizing those. It works great on pure aluminium and adds a bit of scratch resistance. It's sort of ironic though that the most recent Volvos have embraced the recent trend of moving the wing mirror mounts back to the door skin from the window frame corner.

Have you considered using some carbon fiber castoffs to coat the inside of the aluminum mirror shell. You could either bond the inner layer or use the attachment rivets as locators. Any way you back up the soft aluminum will help dissipate minor ding type damage.

That's one hell of a job! There's only one thing that bothers me, it's those nuts that look a bit off place. Have you considered making them knurled (and cylindrical)? Or cylindrical with only two flat sides (for a plier-wrench)? Or cylindrical with a a thin groove and the groove would actually be a hexagon, allowing you to tighten your nuts with a thin wrench?
@ThrottleStopGarage
@ThrottleStopGarage 7 ай бұрын
I think the nuts need a rethink. I've got two sets, so can try to modify a set or I can send some out to get machined with smooth sides. Maybe with a set of holes to tighten. I'm not sure - so they'll sit for a bit.

Hi Craig, Is that a green 1800E I saw in the paint booth at the end? Looks sweet! Now, about those mirrors. I think you will change your mind about the brushed Aluminum shell and the three different finishes. I think replacing the Aluminum shell with a body-colored CF shell, and the bezel with a stainless bezel would go well with what you've done so far. However, after completing the hood trim, you know what you are capable of, and I bet you can't settle for anything less than a stainless shell and bezel. I have always been a fan of stainless. I had a '77 264GL, Black on Black with all stainless trim, OE Steel wheels in Black with stainless beauty rims, and center caps. My boss called it my Swedish Mafia Staff Car.
