LOTS OF UPDATES IN DESCRIPTION!
Link to Mock-up of MKII version: • Mock up of MKII DIY al...
This is my first KZfaq video and did not want to try doing any editing on my Chromebook so what you see is my "one take, that will do,unscripted approach" :)
Since recording this I've had to replace the Ball Catch spring with rubber and a plastic disk to make it stronger. Other than that its pretty much the same. I can easily pass over grass and woodland. I have powered up a 4" curb with ease and safety. I have been up a concrete ramp so steep that the tyres spun.
Future improvements I may be looking at.1) having the main cross part swivel so it lays flatter in the car.2) Or have it hinge so it can go in a smaller car. But for now I just want to enjoy it this summer.
EDIT: I am also now thinking I could have gone with a bigger back wheel so I could cut the stem down and make it look less "bike like!. Better still use suspension forks. ;)
ANOTHER EDIT: Started to get stuff together for a MKII version. Going to have it fold completely flat for the car and looking at getting a chair with easily removable back to also lay flat.
YET ANOTHER EDIT: If anyone is building a similar one and has seen the really expensive ones out there I have realised what they are using for the chair,It is a GO-KART SEAT an expensive one mind but that is what "I" think it is ;)
UPDATE: this chair is now halfway through its new modifications when I realised it would be better if it broke down even further as I am currently having to drive the car with one rear seat down (Ford Focus). I started to look at other box sections that come apart easily. I found what I was looking for on my wife's exercise bike ;)
Not wanting to cut it up I started looking at others for sale locally. I then came across a recumbent one. This is what I am currently looking for now at the right price as it has a really sturdy seat just built for the job. So watch this space. Will do another build video and will stick a crash helmet on and do some action stuff with the next one. Will try and keep the welding to a minimum so more can build their own. But if your thinking of doing this look at exercise equipment as I am.

Firstly my good man, don't ever apologise for a wonderful Yorkshire accent! Most of my wife's family are from Hull! And secondly, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, for recognising that us mere mortals cannot afford these things! I'm currently looking into funding for a Grit Freedom Chair, which is a very similar thing to what you've designed and built for yourself. I say 'looking into', because I know full well that I won't be able to get the funding to be able to afford this thing. Firstly, it's manufactured in America (the first hurdle I've got to negotiate), secondly, as you've rightly pointed out, these things cost an absolute arm and a leg, (it works out at nearly 5 grand for goodness sake!) and thirdly, at least 90% of the funding available for these things is aimed at kids, or least for people under the age of 25! I'm a 48 year old man, for goodness sake, what chance have I got! I want to enjoy what life I've got left, I want to go off the beaten track a bit. So I need something like this! But I can't afford it. I wish the manufacturers of these things, would get it into their skulls that the very people that need these things, are also the poorest people in our societies, the disabled people who, generally speaking are on benefits! I guess what I'm trying to say, is congratulations for taking matters into your own hands, and actually building one of these things yourself, and getting yourself out of the predicament that many of us find ourselves in.

Very inspirational. Last comments were over a year ago, but this deserves to be seen by anyone with a disability. I am wheelchair bound and live next to the ocean. Slowly building up parts to make a beach accessible electric wheelchair for myself using an old wheelchair frame I had. Going onto the beach is why I moved here and I have to adapt a tad to be able to do so. Like so many others I am disgusted with the price of anything having to do with disabilities. Looking for an off-road electric wheelchair and the ones that boast being affordable are asking over 5k. That is around 4k more than I have to spend on a chair. Only issue I am running into at the moment is how expensive the raw parts are. I have about 75% of the parts I need and had spent around 600.00 USD so far… and that was trying my best to be fragile. I still need a few more Fat Tires and rims and those are not cheap. Thank you again for posting this.

Thank you. I've been looking at expensive adaptations for my 10 year old sons wheelchair and I honestly can't understand why things to improve a child's quality of life cost so much, it's outrageous. Now I feel competent enough to build him a chair he can use in general life.

Thanks I hope the video is of some use to you. Thing is to try, and see what you end up with. I do all my planning in my head and then it just seems to come together. I am just going through it all again with my MKII version but it has turned out to be very engineering intensive and even landed me in A&E at one point. Almost there now though just in time for summer again.

Thanks for posting your work, every wheelchair user that has read of any chair ever invented, and put to market, has said the same as you! The first being that the expense is usually out of reach of someone in a chair and the second thing I found, was that the best ideas rarely come to fruition, or are usually only made or sold in countries like the US or China LOL! I have a few older bikes and 4 wheelchairs here that I could and should use as the basis for making a chair with a lever drive, that can get me up and down the hilly terrain we have here, without doing more damage to my shoulders! Cheers!

I just wanted to see what I could build, I had tried to go on grass on my expensive lightweight alloy wheelchair and it simply didn't. I bought a cheap standard wheelchair from Gumtree and cut it down. Then one night I took the back off altogether and sat on it backwards. I managed to get out of my drive and up the curb at the other side of the road but it was all over the place with every push. It is my first attempt really. I have not monetised the video at all and there should be no adverts watching it. I just put it out there to try and help others. I am very surprised that no one has said"Well lets see what it can do!" But that will be for my next project now.

Thanks, already building a more improved version. Just got a BMX bike with 20" mag wheels so I can use one for the rear wheel.Dragged a 4" log about a forest the other day with that smaller 12" rear :) May end up with a slightly longer wheelbase but will put a caster on the front so I can tip onto that should I need to get through doorways or into a lift.

Thanks! I only have about two days worth of work left to carry out on the MKII version. I could get it finished next week but it is so cold now I wouldn't be able to spray paint it. So I have done all that I want to until it gets warmer. Its got a new bigger rear wheel 20" and a seat from and exercise bike so it is much stronger and packs up smaller and may even be lighter. Will do some off road videos with it when I get it done.

Amazing work - thank you very much for taking the time to share the process and specs with us. I'm in a similar boat to you and many people commenting in that the all terrain chairs available commercially are way out of my price range (given limited disability income), and this could be a life changing innovation. If you're around this channel & still answering questions at all, might I ask why you chose to put the wheel on the back rather than the front? A lot of designs I've seen place the third (child bike) wheel on the front, and leave a back wheel off completely, which cuts down on length and theoretically makes it a little more portable. Your thoughts?
@shawng5799
@shawng5799 4 жыл бұрын
Climbing curbs and going up slopes. If you have a small wheel at the front you have to put half the weight on it. You have to wheelie it up a curb then there is nothing to stop you from tipping out backwards. With the two big wheels at the front you can easily "climb" up and over things with a the rear wheel for stability.

fantastic build. I have been looking at building my own chair since my mobility went down hill but after seeing this I realise I have been over thinking all aspects. I will be knocking this up ready for the summer holidays as the kids love playing in the woods at the bottom of the garden but no chance getting a normal chair down there! just a thought: if the rear forks had been welded at a 45 degree angle or so that the box steel and fork where welded at 90 giving the wheel an angle whilst seated, would it not provide an easier time keeping it all straight and not swinging out beneath you?

Only just seen the bit about the angle of the wheel,sorry about that.I found that if the forks are not upright the wheel is super hard to turn. You can try it yourself first holding a chair castor in your hand and moving it about. I did :) Also if it is not straight up and you do get it to turn you can feel the back end rise up and fall. This does happen if you get the two front wheels up a curb leaving the rear behind you can fell it doing all manor of strange things.Including flipping sideways against the curb stopping you from getting up :(

Shawn G I hope you're still monitoring this post. I have a couple of questions. If it's not too personal a question, how much do you weigh? I weigh about 235 lbs (107Kg, 16.8 stone). Do you think this will support me? Would it be better to have the axle tube be mounted underneath the longitude tube instead of on top? Do you think it would be possible/feasible for the wheels to be easily removable and the lateral(axle) tube and the long tube to pivot to facilitate storage? Thank you for sharing a truly inspired and inspiring design.

If you look at my other video you will see what happened with this project. The version here worked fine though I wanted a bigger back wheel so it would handle kerbs better. I fitted a new stem and a 20" BMX wheel but I could not get it to work as the angles were all wrong. While modifying it further an accident with a hacksaw landed me in hospital and my wife banned me from the garage. Then I came across an expensive wheelchair for just £100 and within two days I had resprayed it,re-upholstered it and fitted BMX tyres. So the project has not been touched for almost a year. It is strange as I woke this morning I had just thought about a modification I could try and then I read your comment. So watch this space this summer.
