Custom exhaust build - Yamaha XV-TR1- Part 3
The completion of constructing a fully custom mild steel exhaust for a TR1. Using bends supplied by a store, these were cut and welded into the basic design supplied by the customer.
Its a long video, even at 4x speed, so I have split the construction video into three parts. ***********************************************************************

I had absolutely no need to watch this. I don't even know why I clicked on pt1 to start with. Skills I do not have in a craft I really don't have an interest in... Well done sir. You have both entertained and informed me.. I still have no desire to build my own exhaust system, but good on you for having the ability to do so, and thanks for the movie.

Excellent video. Your comments below say you ordered stainless stuff from Cone Engr., but all the welding in the video looks like it is done with mig on mild steel (?) tubing.
@krankengineering
@krankengineering 7 жыл бұрын
+lincspeed Correct, this particular exhaust in the video is mild steel. Comment below with Benniewheelie is discussing pricing for a custom exhaust in stainless, in which case I would probably buy my stock from Cone Engineering (depending how crappy the exchange rates are!)

I had a similar design fabricated on my Virago Caferacer build out of Cone Engr stainless tube and mufflers ($350 cost) but getting the talent to properly fit and weld the stainless ran the overal cost up to nearly $2000 US. My next design will be executed in mild steel!

+lincspeed "custom" and "cheap" never seem to go together in the same sentence! But neither does "factory", "stock" and "cool".

I’m currently working on my own custom exhaust on my ‘82 xv750, do you have any info regarding the jetting/ running of the engine once the exhaust was completed? Great work and a lot of inspirational stuff on your channel! I’ve watched this series about 100 times by the way!
@krankengineering
@krankengineering 4 жыл бұрын
Hi barrythefielder, I’m sorry mate, my job was to build the exhaust, I’m not sure what was done to the bike regarding jetting. However if this had been my bike, I would simply book it into my local bike Dyno shop (assuming they could tune an older carby bike) and have it tuned to suit the exhaust.
@barrythefielder
@barrythefielder 4 жыл бұрын
Matt McLeod thanks for the reply, It’s pretty hard to find anyone who deals with carby bikes anymore, I’ve got a ballpark idea so I’ll go with that.

how did you polish and clean the whole exhaust build up ?
@krankengineering
@krankengineering 7 жыл бұрын
+icenyne1 you have to sand each weld down flat with the tube, then progressively sand them smoother until you make them invisible. Not impossible, but takes a lot of time. Have a look at my video on polishing metal, exactly the same process applies. In this case the customer was wrapping the pipes, so no need to spend the time ($) to polish the welds.

Very interesting video to watch. I'm just curious, what would an exhaust like this cost?
@krankengineering
@krankengineering 7 жыл бұрын
+BennyWheelie all depends on your location, material costs, labour costs etc. Lots of bends = more material costs and welding costs. Stainless steel = more expensive. Polished finish = more labour = more expensive. They have to be estimated on a case by case basis.
@myshitonyoutube
@myshitonyoutube 7 жыл бұрын
Ok, I understand. I live in Sweden and it wouldn't be a good deal for me to get it shipped + vat & tax. I was just wondering, I have a TR1 (xv1000) and it would be interesting to have a reference price. Stainless steel, no polish. Around 1500-2000 USD?
@krankengineering
@krankengineering 7 жыл бұрын
+BennyWheelie yes that is a reasonable estimate at our local labour rates in Australia. The other way to do it: estimate 20 hours of labour (you might know your local labour rate for fabrication) and say US$500 to get all the stainless parts shipped from Cone Engineering in USA. Add a little for consumables and that should be a good estimate.
