I've been playing golf for 30 years now and I'm shocked that I didn't try this sooner. It's been a game-changer for me. Immediate results. I have an old TaylorMade Superfast Burner 1.0 (same one Sneds used a few years back to win at Torrey). I cut the stiff shaft down two inches (now 44.5") and added about 10 grams to the bottom back and toe of the driver. I've had longer and straighter drives than I've ever had before. I liked the results so much I added about three grams to each iron. So much more pleasant to play golf. Feels like it should be illegal.

Fascinating video, I have been tinkering with my Callaway Rogue Driver recently. I was fitted with this club and after a bit of a honeymoon period my drives have gone a bit off. I transferred the shaft into an earlier Callaway GBB driver head with the sliding draw/fade adjuster. Fiddling around with this and also fitting a 9 gram sole weight has refreshed my tee shots.

Excellent video Peter! I tried cutting down the butt end of my driver shaft and threw off the swing weight. Adding lead tape to the head brought it back to D3 and got the best of both worlds, consistency and distance (because I was hitting the middle of the face). Thanks again for the content!

Great vid Pete, really interesting.. My last 3 drivers i've been fitted into low lofted, low spin models. While they were long I really struggled with consistant duck hooks. Went to Scottsdale Golf and they fitted me into an M6 with more loft (10.5)and the x flex shaft you had there to keep the spin down.. It's been a game changer. Loads more control and hitting a lot more fairways without any noticable loss of distance... Winner Winner ;-)

I just added lead to my 52 and 56, 9 grams each. The 52 I placed then dead center stacked for a better ball strike. It was a high middle strike and the weight brought it down to center. 56 I added the on center heel side to move my strike from heel side to more center. Both had the intended affect and I'm pleasantly surprised how the fractionally different strikes have improved my wedge play. Great video Pete!

Love it!! I kinda have this same sort of setup in theory with my three wood. I'm some one that tends to put a lot of spin on the lower lofted clubs due to my steep attack angle. So I stuck a 70g tour x stiff shaft on a 13° deep face xhot pro. Boom! Heavy, low spin monster that's almost impossible for me to turn over= fairway finder. Again love the vids Pete, showing people how proper equipment setup can improve the game.

Had an M3 with a 1 inch shorter shaft, changed the sliding weights to heavier ones and added lead tape to slow tempo down. My miss is a quick hook or a block right. The result of the heavier SW was a smoother tempo and I felt I could go after the ball more without being scared of the quick hook. The head recently cracked and Im waiting for a new M5 head from TM. Will probably go for the same setup.

I have tried my 3 wood shaft in my driver (both G400 Ping clubs). I struck the club better and hit it farther. I, too, had a bit of a draw problem with the club but did not think to add tape to change the club face closing rate. I will try all you suggest and see if I can make a better driver for myself. Thanks for the insight!!

You should tip the shaft. Cuz you basically turned it into a 3 wood. Also lead tape doesn't "slow down" any part of the head. It just moves CG a bit to move gear effect. Also by shortening it so much, you've flattened the effective lie angle which will also make it go right

Wow I did the exact same thing a few years ago with my Rocketballs stage 2 Tour edition driver. It still hits very well and I always hit it well but it's not as forgiving as my epic flash. I even did the lead tape, but I used a shorter shaft from one of my Rocketballs 2 rescue hybrids instead of my 3 wood. Most places I play are too short for me anyways and I don't like driver - wedge golf all the time. I usually have to put some lead on the toe of some woods. I struggle to keep spin down too. The club feels much better by re gripping with lead tape under the grip, and/or a lead cap on the end of the shaft under the grip too. I do that with any club I put lead on at the toe.

For a time, when I got back into golf, I thought it would be a great idea to go with a single length set of irons to keep my stance and swing consistent. I found I had a huge gap between my irons and hybrids, so I did cut down my hybrids and then added some weight to the heads to make them feel like a similar swing weight. It worked pretty well, and despite being longer still than the irons, I was crushing those clubs. When I abandoned the irons, I regretted it a bit. that said, all I've done in my current set was to shorten my hybrids a half inch for gapping and adjusted the lie angle using the hosel. I'd like to say I had success with my driver, but it an OB-finder, not a fairway finder, so it's been staying in the bag. I am thinking of buying some weights and playing with it.

Hi Pete I have a cobra f7 driver. On it you get 2 x 3g weights and 1x 10g. I normally have the 10g in the low lauch setting as I launch high and the 2 x 3grams in the high and draw ports. I had a massive slice down to not being the most flexible after years of playing rugby. So i purchases a extra 10 gram weight to put in the draw setting. Now having 2 x 10g weights on the club it seems to help straighten me up and keep the ball lower.

Enjoyed the video. I design things as a hobby. One of the things I designed was a driver that makes it very hard to slice the ball, and also to top the ball, which I suppose would be great for the average club golfer. I haven't applied for a patent on it yet and haven't got the money to build one, and decided against contacting a manufacturer after going on their websites and reading that they don't want you to contact them unless you have a patent on the thing that you have designed, which is a shame as I think my club would bring a massive improvement for most golfers. I was thinking of doing one of those crowd funding things but I'm not sure how to go about it. After watching this video I may get hold of some carbon fiber and try to build one.

Great video! Maybe it is time to dig out an old driver and tinker a bit. I have an M4 driver, x-stiff 73gram shaft, 9,5deg, cranked down to 7,5 and this summer I saw very clearly that I had to get the spin down, since I have a club head speed of approx 120-125 and the M4 just spins too much at that speed. So I added 10gr of lead tape to the lower leading edge of the driver and I have never driven the ball longer. (obviously I am also swinging better, but there was a very solid improvement exactly when I added the weight). So for a cheap golfer, lead weight can really work wonders. But I still think I will get me a Ping 410 LST this xmas.

you are on the right track, but 14 grams is not enough. fourteen grams is about right for a 44.25" shaft. for a three wood shaft (43.5") you need ~20 grams. for a five wood (42.5") you need at least 26 grams. use a swingweight scale, you can buy one for $50 from golf works.

Nice test. I am not sure that the toe weights slow the closure rate, rather it moves the sweet spot so is giving a different gear effect from same strike point. You could easily test this by looking at the data from Foresight on Closure Rate.

I don't think I will ever go back to an off the shelf length for my Driver. Currently sit at 44.25", not quite your 3 wood shaft length. Also when using a shorter shaft it reduces the swing weight of the club so its best to add weight to the head to find your preferred swing weight. adding weight to the head will also effect the shafts feel and flex similar to soft stepping irons. Tipping the shaft may be needed to maintain the feel of the driver. Switching out the shaft to a 3 wood shaft as you did will allow the shaft to play true to flex. I love this topic and thank you for educating the masses

I started using drivers at 44" 2 seasons ago and it has made all the difference in the world. I typically carry about 295 so losing that 5-10 yards in the 2" isnt really a big deal. The fairways mean more to my score than a few yards.

2:52 “carry distance pretty low”. Remember Pete, you’re mostly talking to mortals here. My dream is to roll out to your carry.

Put my M5 fairway shaft in my M5 driver during the middle of last season. It was the best decision I have made in my golfing life. Immediately saw an massive improvement in dispersion with no noticeable loss in distance. I feel so confident now on the tee and have zero issues with the lighter swing weight.

How's that club now? I've put my driver head onto a 42" 5 wood shaft but haven't hit it yet. I reckon I'll be able to swing my hardest and still hit the middle

Nice Pete. I’m always intrigued by your somewhat unorthodox first move away from the ball. Is this how you e always naturally taken the club away or adapted to fight the left side miss? I’ve got BIG issues rolling the lead arm with too much rotation and wayyy inside. Kills me!

I've got a 12 degree M6, and use a 8.5 degree Tour issue M2 head with a Graffaloy blue 3 wood shalf for bullet low ballers. Works well when the couse warrents it. Moving weight around though.......surely you'd have been better testing with the M5 lol

Great video as always Peter, but couldn't help but think about Trigger from Only Fools and Horses when your title says don't buy a new driver before watching this, yet you replaced the shaft of an existing driver. "i've had the same broom for 20 years. This old broom has had 17 new heads and 14 new handles." :)
