Episode10 is all about tanks and how tricky it can be to put them in their spot, see us struggle and fail to put the big one in, we win in the end.
The tanks were drawn up and designed by Matt and our friend Josh.
The drawings were sent to Atlas Tanks and built to our specs. We are so happy they are here!
Next Matt talks about strip planking, some issues we've had with the wood moving between seasons and how we have decided to deal with that.
Hope you all enjoy watching this episode and if you would like to support the build, please click on the link to our patreon page.
Thank you!
cheers Matt, Iefke & Obie

It's your boat, so the choices in materials, colors, parts, and accessories etc. are also yours. If any viewers want to use a different part, let them build their own boat and have at it. Keep doing as you've done so far, you're doing a fabulous job. I'm enjoying your videos immensely.

Remember when my wife and I started restoring our old farm, 25 years ago. She was 38 and I 46. Sleeping in sleeping bags in the hay loft and warming water with plastic water bottles left in the July Sun to wash up, it was quite an adventure. The day after we got the keys, (had Champagne picnic/barbecue with cassette radio music,) it started raining; three weeks into the build(demolition) wife told me she was pregnant. We had installed a septic tank, but still no toilet or water in the barn(200 plus year old farm.) I remember a few years later, working 12 hour days, trying to get things going, mother, baby, and I going back and forth to Paris every chance we could, I suddently had to spend a week's stay in hospital, after an operation. I LOVED IT!!! Hadn't been able to get that much rest and relaxation COMPLETELY away from "it all" since the whole shooting match had began...Seeing you lying in the grass with your two dogs suddenly reminded me of those"blissful hospital days, flat on my back...) cheers...rr Normandy, France

Wow, the fit of the tanks are perfect, very nice job. I look at your boat, inside and out and just admire your skills, it’s beautiful!! The hardest part of an injury is the waiting and waiting, don’t let it mess with your head, your only “job” right now is to wait, to heal, that’s the only way back.... thanks so much for the episode and good luck with those pesky possums!

Those tanks fit really well and it was another chance to see how good your interior carpentry is. When they are made well (not like Tally Ho's plastic fuel tanks) then as you say there is nothing wrong with plastic. It doesn't appear though that there are any inspection hatches that can be used for cleaning. Is that an issue or do you just have to rely on good cleanliness and the odd chemical sterilisation? Hope Matt's shoulder continues to improve and he can get back to work soon.

👍 beau travail de précision sur les mesures et l’installation de vos réservoirs. Petite blague du sud de la France : quand on a des réservoirs de 400 litres d’eau, il faut prévoir un réservoir de 100 litres de Pastis. Prenez soin de vous.

As for the strip planking issue, I have heard the gun shots myself a few times, but timber is a breathing natural material and responds to changes in the weather , so don't panic it's just a timing thing, once you diagonal plank and glass your hull will be bullet proof, keep em coming and enjoy. 😀

Thank you for sharing your experience with this too! We have noticed the wood moving between seasons and as you said it has definitely stopped in the sections where we added the second layer of oak. It will be fully sealed once we glass but like everything in boatbuilding that step has to wait for a lot of other jobs to be completed first. We will keep the videos coming to take you along for the ride. I'm so happy you are enjoying them. Thank you for the inside thoughts and the feedback, much appreciated!

You're going to put down a piece of rubber or insulation anywhere the tank is touching the hull?? I would think that it would slowly rub a hole through the tank .. I'm also guessing or suggesting that you put a filter at the fill hose so that you can filter the water before it ever gets to your tank.

The bad thing is not the plastic but the wanton use. Plastic has served humanity in many positive applications. Specialized usage such as yours is mighty fine when other options are near impossible or overtly expensive. I just want to ask whether you had considered 4 instead of 2 tanks for the obvious reason. Should one fail, water loss is less. However, if I were to do it, I rather have many commercial 10 litre water containers secured in compartments spread across the cabin floor. Old school style. And the filling of one main small day tank would be good exercise. Just my preference, of course. The other problem boaters face is tank cleansing. I cannot imagine myself using chemical cleansing. Yaks! Big tank hatches is one way to do manual cleansing though.

@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River Do they ? That means you can never add an inlet spout, of say half a metre, and fill the tank up with water. That's what "testing" involves, and I cant fathom why the wouldn't want that to happen.

Plastic tanks are absolutely fine as long as their built correctly as with anything I know Tally Ho had some made and they were built kind of doggy that's why a lot of folks are questioning whether that is the best route to go. but as I said like anything else if their built right and are tested as you said they should be fine.

I'm in the UK and am very new to your channel. I heard you say that there was some contraversy re plastic water tanks. on KZfaq. Should you be having Tally Ho in mind, I think you will find that it was the faulty build quality of the particular tanks as supplied, rather than the efficacy of 'plastic' !!

@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River Жыл бұрын
Yes well we noticed a lot of people having opinions on plastic watertanks and we were a bit worried we would cop the wave of that for using plastic water tanks but as you said it was the manufacturer not the material itself, so a good point.

i tend to agree Matt, plastic tanks aren't everyone's cup of tea, but then i don't drink tea, i prefer Gin, haha! i think plastic tanks are certainly better from the clean aspect as well as cost effective, but i do often wonder regarding the construction, i'm sure a single use rotary mould would be better, fittings and fixtures can be added i have seen one boat builder who had an amazing offer on his custom tanks, but they were dreadful, had many holes throughout the welds and no pressure could be built up as water quite frankly peed everywhere, the supplier swore they were good, been tested and refused to give the customer his money back in the end that builder went to the expense of stainless steel and another descent offer on cost, which is an altogether far better material, but with the plastic one, i wonder if the end panels might be pushed in a half inch so a descent weld can be obtained with a good fillet, the weight of the water when full cannot push the panel outwards, perhaps with inspection holes on top that might be big enough during construction to weld on the inside, or even add another fillet of silicon if the weld can only be done outside, as they say, there are many ways to skin a cat, and i'm sure methods can be much improved, lets hope these tanks do you both a great service, but do pressure test them

I’m surprised you didn’t use any type of chafe protection under the tanks. During 25 years of boat building, chafe protection was always required when installing both fuel and water tanks.
@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River
@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River Жыл бұрын
Hi Phil, thanks for your comment and concern. This was just a dry fit to see if our drawings were accurate and if the tanks would fit the space. When we install the tanks and connect fittings etc we will definitely use all recommended gear to stop chafe and movement of the tanks. They will be well protected and strapped down during the final install.

Be sure to mount those tanks with some resilient mounting material continuously along support points to prevent movement and chafing. Also support the attached piping so any movement will not put stress on the tank nozzles or fittings. On your next boat build order tanks with integral mounting saddles or feet. Unfortunately your tanks have no mounting saddles or feet so do a good job of mounting. The 400 lb weight plus sloshing and movement will put load on the tanks.

Now we can compare (Tally Ho, Arabella) in time the results of tank material design & selection (plastic, stainless, exotic metal, other(aluminum, steel), manufacturer build/test quality, price, durability, flexing, blocking/securing/tie down, chaffing, slooshing, electrolysis between tank material and fittings, inspection/cleaning/draining/removal, repairs. Every boat is unique and so are the owners' choices. Pros and cons to each choice and application.
@rolandtb3

Arabella used (3) 20 gallon "monel" tanks for diesel. Another exotic material is titanium. Monel is a group of nickel-copper alloys. Containing about 66% nickel & 31.5% copper, the reminder made up of trace elements.

Polyethylene tanks have been used successfully for years for storing chemicals in water and wastewater plants. Very rugged tanks while being inexpensive. The real issue in KZfaq projects was poorly built tanks that leaked. Unfortunately this was blown out or proportion by people with lack of knowledge. Regarding your two tanks being connected, since one tank is higher than the other, be aware that the vent for the lower tank will be flooded to the level of the higher tank. Looks good!

I wouldn't overstate the anti-plastic sentiment on KZfaq. Obviously you are referring to Leo's experience with Tally Ho. I'm sure most people would just recognise that as really poor workmanship, rather than anything fundamental with plastic.
