My uncle had some extra hay that he wanted round baled, so a quick trip over with the American 80 and the Gehl 1475 round baler to roll up some grass hay was in order.

Hello Chris! I had this one to come up in my feed, so I had some time to check it out. That White is a beauty and the Gehl does a pretty decent job on the hay. I had ran a twine wrap New Holland 654 round baler for about 15 years until it got to the point where I was going to have to put 10 grand or so into it. So I decided to get another baler, which I went with a John Deere 450E net wrap. Both balers did a good job, with the net wrap just a little more tighter and it will stay more in tact and better nutrients if held over into the next year. Nice video, glad I could watch it, I hope you have a great day!

Net wrap was an option for the Gehl, but we didn't get it. It sure is a lot faster than twine. I've been thinking I need to find a parts machine I could get the net wrap off of to put on mine.

We were on vacation and stopped in at the Floyd County Museum in Charles City to get build cards for our 1750, my 880 and my brothers 770 industrial. We found out the 1750 was built then sent back in to be re-configured and then sold. My tractor checks out and every thing is the same as the build card says, but has "16" in the spec number which apparently is un known as to what it actually means. My brothers 770 we found out left the factory without a backhoe or loader. The 1750 was shipped to La Porte, Indiana in 68' I think, My 880 was shipped to Dallas, Texas on October 5th, 1959, and my brothers 770 was shipped somewhere in Michigan in 64'.

@@ThatOliverGuyChris As a young farmer, many years ago, I owned some Oliver equipment and I found it superior to John Deere. I was born into a John Deere family who referred to anything other than John Deere as "off brand" so it was always an uphill battle with my dad when I came home with new Oliver equipment. My dealer was Capital City Oliver in Austin. I wonder how things would have turned out if Oliver could have found a better partner then White.

@@KCAATV I have often said that Oliver was proof that you could have an excellent product and still not succeed, and Deere was proof that you didn't have to have the best product if you have the best management.

Dad's out with the 1460 baling. If I remember right, Gehl said you could run those balers with a 40 pto hp tractor in the brochure. We never figured out how, since it provided the 52 pto hp David Brown 990 with a real work out. 65ish is a healthy size we found. Have you ever seen a 4x5 round baler rub with 40 pto hp tractor?
@ThatOliverGuyChris

Can't say I have seen one that small on a 4x5. The American never even notices it, and the 1750 handled it fine. Anyone reading this have any input?

@@shawnartz7113That's 55 pto hp by the book. I have no issues believing that in hay that is very dry and no steep hills. The David Brown can do it, just has to be very dry and go slower.

Good morning Chris, I really like how you do stuff. Taking a few minutes to adjust the FreePlay is something that most guys would just ignore. The fact that you take the time to pull that panel off and do that before you even start for the day seems normal to you, but it really says a lot. Most guys just run stuff until it’s a major problem. The reason all your equipment is as beautiful as it is because you take the time to do the little things and That’s really something to be proud of
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I learned from all of those guys, having to service their equipment. I remember having to do a service call on an American for a slipping clutch. It had never had the free pedal adjusted. A little adjusting and they were back in business, but I'm sure it took a lot of life off that clutch, not to mention paying me service calls rates to do something so simple. I did get to the field an then remembered I forgot to add air to the hydraulic tank on the baler. It still worked, but it took a moment longer for the belt shuttle to return after each bale.

Also, can you tell me about the White 120 at the museum? It says "X815" on the serial tag and X30 with some other numbers in the casting right next to it. It looks like a normal 120 to me. Maybe just pre-production? Thanks.

That was an experimental 120. Engineer Dean Barker bought it from White and used it on his farm. He added the electric shift control for the 3 speed from an American series tractor. Upon his passing it was donated to the museum, as well as his 1655 FWA.

@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 3 жыл бұрын
It's a 1990 model. White used the transmission from an Oliver 1655, put a Cummins engine in front, did some updating to some of the features and sheet metal, and called them the American series because at the time they were the only tractors under 100 horsepower built in the USA. They could be ordered in your choice of White Farm Silver, Oliver Green, Minneapolis Moline Yellow or Cockshutt Red.

Chris, on that brand of baler you have can or is there a way to change the size of the twin from the small to the larger size? Or are you stuck with having to use the small. Because the small is getting really hard to find, get. And it's the same with a newhallend square baler. Do you know of a way to adjust them, or know someone who does?

I've run 9000 foot through it, no problem other than it runs out much faster than the 20,000 foot twine.

How about parts availability for the Gehl? Are they still fairly available or do you have a good stock on hand? BTW, I grew up working on a farm with all Oliver equipment. The gentleman that owned the farm outside of Fredericksburg Virginia had been an Oliver dealer in Gaithersburg Maryland and brought quite a bit of his equipment and part stock with him. The 1850 with the Perkins diesel was my favorite and my grandfather plowed with a 2150 front wheel assist and a year-round cab.

How do you know if a pto clutch is bad
@ThatOliverGuyChris

It either slips under load because the friction material has worn away, or it won't stop turning because the clutch discs are warped.
