This is the sort of thing where I think the new event controller blocks could REALLY shine if they were to add keyboard button press. Something like if thrust forward button pressed, accelerate wheels etc

Glad to see I'm not the only one that has been working on actual suspension in space engineers lol iv been taking a crack at it for about a year or so now it's just so neat to watch the geometry in action it's also quite neat you effectively made solid axle suspension where as I made independent suspension lol keep up the great work man and hopefully we can get some insane rovers built to truly wow the SE community

I watched this and the tutorial video and for those wondering, these *do* work for their large grid variants, they just take a little fidgeting and patience to make it work. I have a line of large grid rovers that specialize in drilling that have been plagued for ages by rough terrain. These custom suspensions of yours have significantly improved their capabilities over rough terrain and I want to thank you for putting this on KZfaq. Seriously, you helped a lot Lol. 🤣

No worries man I’m glad you found a use for them, I have found they work better on large grid rovers anyway due to the increased mass of the rover

For me the main topic of studying suspentions is to find survival friendly solution to a drastic changes in weight (yeah i was building kharak like cruisers with hangars, assault and onboard production) which where supposed to atack npc's and then dissasemble, drain all power and hydrogen literally leaving only bones and skeletons. And i was sucsessfull enougth with pulling a gigant rover on Pertam out of canion, and performing its tasks. But two major sources of headic where overweight stress during contaniers being 50 % full. And inability to leave it in open. As pretty much any passing ship or spawned drone where long living enough to blow up moust of wheels or heavily damage it while operator is offline.

The stock wheel suspension is pretty good and robust in this game. You clearly enjoyed the experimentation of more complex wheel suspensions systems. I actually find driving on low gravity worlds more difficult than high gravity worlds as the suspension needs to have it's damping reduced to a very low number otherwise my rides are going to get lots of air (vacuum) when moving at some speed or rolling the vehicle. Active robotic suspensions for off road vehicles is not yet invented but already, NASA and ESA are experimenting with such suspensions systems to address the unique hazards of driving at speed in a low gravity environment. Basically, Active robotic suspension adds an additional axis or dimension to an existing active suspension system allowing it to handle offroading conditions at a higher speed than the gravity driving conditions allow

Honestly, I think the only way to make that final design work 100% forward and backwards is to use springs or another set of wheels with a rotor head (as a makeshift spring) with those main struts facing against one another. You would half the amount of wheels you could have for the same space, but it would work forward and backwards. Not sure if that tradeoff is worth it though.

Something you may like, an idea that's been out for a good long time, is a vanilla fix for controlling sub-grids without need for a script. Not saying there's anything wrong with scripts but I encourage you to look into the "WASD Converter". I'm trying to make a biped mech with a WASD Converter built in so I won't need a script... And yes it was satisfying to see that 8-wheeler👌☺

Seems you are looking for a duel spring set up, though issue is klang as you need multiple sub grids for the suppression rods. Only way I see it to work is if pistons could be modified to be used on both ends to have them be able to compress without a script.

I think the main difference was not really the way the wheels articulated (although that had a large effect on the 1st and 2nd course), but the strength of the suspension. Especially the simple rovers were stiff as a board. Look at 2:30, the suspensions are basically not compressing at all. In order to choose the optimal (and for these tests even more importantly, consistent) suspension strength, I would do the following: (For multi-component suspension systems, you have to determine the optimal strength for each component, while keeping all remaining components as stiff as possible. I.e. first you determine the optimal strength for the suspension arm, then for the rocker axle, then for the suspension blocks.) Step 1: Put all but 2 wheels on the ground (retract 2 wheels up into the chassis using the height offset, or put all but 2 wheels up on chucks). You'd ideally do that with a diagonally opposing pair of wheels on the front-most and rear-most axles. Step 2: Adjust the strength of the remaining wheels such that both these 2 wheels just about touch the ground. Step 3: Note down that strength value. Step 4: Set the strength of all wheels back to maximum stiffness and restart at step 1 or 2 for the next component. Step 5: Set the stiffness of all components to the values that you've noted down. You should have all wheels touching the ground and all suspension components at (close to) maximum expansion. If you're not at maximum expansion, you'd need to lift the 2 wheels off the ground less in step 1.

how u control wheels which are connected with rotor?
@Jodah175
@Jodah175 Жыл бұрын
My major problem with any suspension design is the subgrid script. It never just locks the wheels. They all spin the wheels when "parked", which I can only assume is a limitation of the scripting/game itself. But it doesn't stop me from messing around with suspension designs. :-) Ninja edit: It takes a lot of fine tuning to get suspensions to move properly. Brake torque is immensely useful as are rotor limits. I usually set my minimums to keep things from smashing together, and braking torque to allow things to slowly settle. I've probably spent more time than I care to admit fiddling with them.

@wafilia3805
@wafilia3805 Жыл бұрын
@@quantumchief Well, yes i know but, if you change the settings to low Nm and change the direction via timerblock it kind of works. It is rearly wobbly in mid air, but not with ground contact or hurdle. The only Problem is that it also pulls the wheel back up. I dont know, maybe the event controller can help there, need more testing. Sadly i dont see that this methode works with every vehicle. Through the fine tuning of the piston it is not possible to change the weight. Which makes it for mining and carrying from drones impossible.

@ltmuffler3482
@ltmuffler3482 6 ай бұрын
have you considered making the wheels slightly closer together and then adding a set of wheels at the front and back set wider and higher up? This helps reduce the chance of it ever flipping, and having wheels higher and closer to the front and back make it less likely you'll smash the front and back on particularly steep slope transitions.

11:00 Well, if you knew your trigonometry, you'd not find it weird at all. While regular springs push back stronger the more you compress them, rotor-based springs get weaker. (In their lower quadrants. In their upper quadrants, they get stronger again.) Ever done some push-ups? It gets easier to push the more your arms are straightened out vs when the upper arm is mostly parallel to the ground. Same thing. The holding force is proportional to the absolute of the tangent of the sprung arm's angle against the horizontal, it's lowest at the horizontal, where it's only the rotor's torque divided by the arm's length, and it's theoretically infinite at TDC and BDC.

2:40 - "Because these wheels have so much torque" No, torque has nothing to do with it. Suspension strength does. Namely, if someone forgets to adjust it to the weight and terrain roughness. Suspensions should be made as hard or soft as necessary to keep the wheels in contact with the ground and also to reduce the risk of fatal ground collision. All you're demonstrating here is that you suck at setting up suspensions.

@@quantumchief I wasn't talking about the real world, I was talking about the in-game suspensions and your attempts to drive across in-game shapes and your commentary on an in-game vehicle's antics resulting from the lack of you even so much as trying to make use of the settings that you _do_ have. And then you even used the wrong term, you engineer, you. Of course wheels will have trouble with jagged terrain like SE's weird erosion-wannabe scars carved into the terrain. Simple geometry dictates they're difficult to impossible to overcome if the wheels are physically not large enough. Congratulations on responding to something that wasn't even contested in the first place.
