I came up with this simple holiday project as a way to mix and match 3D printing and lasercutting. If you only have one or the other, you can make it work!
Snowflake Ornament STL + Other Files : bit.ly/babyflakes
Lithophane Generator : 3dp.rocks/lithophane/
Shopping List:
• Astrolabicon Atom Edition Series 1 Puzzles : bit.ly/atom_1
- 'non-limited' version : bit.ly/astro_atom
• MakeBlock Laserbox Pro Lasercutter : bit.ly/Laserbox
• Snapmaker 2.0 3-in-1 3D Printer : bit.ly/Snapmkr
- or on Amazon : amzn.to/3DJjT5h
• Fillamentum 'Gold Happens' Extrafill PLA : bit.ly/fGoldPLA

Very nice way to mesh both subtractive and additive manufacturing methods. Usually when we subtract and add we get zero, however here we see the master making anything but nothing! Great work!

Hey Devin, I was the first to ever get your limited edition Astrolabicon! I decided to get one of these as an early birthday present for myself and was extra surprised when I received the actual FIRST one! I just wanted to say thank you and I'll be looking forward to series 2!

i really liked the browns the first laser engraver made with its low contrast image, i think it would be a nice effect to do a first pass with that one and then a light pass with the snapmaker to give it definition and the neat dotted texture

For darker/more robust images on the CO2 I'll use a little borax and water mix brushed on before lasering. Gets a nice crisp result

You should try etching the back of a mirror. You can then also paint the back of the mirror any color(s) you wish. Neat effect doing that.

If you want a darker color faster, just cover the wood in some painters tape while it's being engraved in the machine, then paint a black wash over it and peel it off after it's dry. That way you can keep the lights the same but have darker darks.

@@make.anything I ordered the new 10 watt laser. I wonder how that would do with thin acrylic.
@make.anything
@make.anything 2 жыл бұрын
@@JonnyRay82 it may depend on wavelength of the laser. And having air assist will help. 1/16" could be doable, I'd guess

For better results on your images engraved on wood, use a cup of water with a couple teaspoons of borax for laundry. then lightly wipe the top surface that's being engraved, let it dry, and engrave much faster with lower power.

Sounds interesting! Are the fumes safe?
@MrChinkman37
@MrChinkman37 2 жыл бұрын
@@make.anything it looks like it should be "safe" when lasering, but just like with wood, you are going to want to exhaust the fumes outside. For instance, it is not as toxic as burning vinyl or PVC, but pretty much all fumes that come off of laser cutting stuff are toxic and therefore should be exhausted outdoors, and you should use your laser cutter in a well ventilated area. Also, you should be careful not to inhale powder when pouring and mixing it in the water.

I just got my atom s1. 5/10 isn't bad especially for this puzzle. I'll definitely be buying a regular version because I don't Wana risk breaking the atom s1. I've now solved it about 7 times and love the method I figured out. I still haven't seen any "how to" videos so I'm pretty for sure the method I use is just ones that are on KZfaq somewhere. Ik I'll be doing a video on the s1 though since it is just amazing.

Great video, but now it has me thinking: does anyone think it's possible to litho the picture in the middle and build up the snowflake around it...thereby doing it entirely on a 3d printer? 🤔 I've done a handful of standalone lithos now, but have never built them into a larger print, and neither have I ever seen anyone else try it. I don't have a laser engraver yet, and my cnc is still in the box waiting to be assembled lol!
@thegrafxguy1
@thegrafxguy1 2 жыл бұрын
From my experience printing them standing up gives better results as you aren't dealing with stepped curves that way. Printing the snowflake would be much easier flat unfortunately. So I think 2 pieces is necessary

Why not do a two part on the 3D printer? Just print the star and the litho separate and snap them together.
