We're two years into our lean journey... but all self-taught :) Podcasts like this and Lean Made Simple, 2-sec lean, etc. have been fantastic. We're in the process of moving into the parametric manufacturing realm from custom. It's been a trial-and-error natural process and I didn't even know what to call it before this podcast! Giving it a name and getting an experienced view of the challenges involved is SO helpful. Keep up the great work! I'd love to hear more on this subject - especially ideas to help help guide and develop team members up the continuum (not that moving "up" or towards High Volume has to be the goal, but it is my goal to move center to center-right). I'm focusing our morning meetings next week on this topic... and longer if needed until we get in better alignment (also watched your 2 sec lean summit presentation on the Manufacturing Continuum). Thanks!

Man! You nailed!! I’ve failed to be profitable in my custom shop because I price low to compete with high-volume manufacturers. Duh!

Love it, great job! Great info and it's really helpful with the longer format to be able to take in the information. It doesn't feel rushed.

Thank you for a great episode and addressing my long rambling questions I left on the first episode. You’ll be proud of me, I turned down a custom job last week. I have the tools to do it but it would have been a PITA. Custom furniture is so incredibly hard. And imo is a crowded market thanks to many DIYers (some of whom are incredibly skilled) doing custom work for tool money. I’m focusing on outsourcing boxes, drawers, and doors and focusing on the finishing and installation where being highly skilled and working with customers makes the biggest difference. Let the guys with the $500k CNCs make the parts. As for your last line…meh I don’t really want to have a huge business that’s Fortune 500. Or a lot of employees, that’s not me. However, I do work to make more money without working myself to death

1.- Custom is like haute couture: expensive, exclusive, long time waiting for a product, 2.- High Volume is like prêt à porter: cheap, not exclusive, immediate availability 3.- The third category, parametric is like Prêt-à-Couture, takes the best features of the previous ones. The titles can be resumed as: 1.- Personalization 2.- Mass production 3.- Mass personalization I read these premises years ago on the web, taken from the world of fashion saludos Gerardo

I'm in custom furnitures, for my customer base everything is designed by architects and designers, i gotta say this, if you want to become a millionaire in the custom furnitures business, you've gotta be a billionaire.

LOOOL 😅. have u heard about the woodworker that won the lottery? They asked “what will u do with your millions?” He said “just keep working till the money runs out 😂 “
