i read a study that proved v8 vettes get better fuel eco than a prius while having slightly worse drag coefficient, in normal driving conditions, stomp that loud pedal and it def changes
@horrovac
@horrovac 2 жыл бұрын
@@martymcfly6637 While I'm sure this is true, I'm also quite sure it's an irrelevant truthism. As you correctly observe, it's all about what exactly these "normal driving conditions" are. A hybrid is just a normal car (with extra weight) when you're driving it at high speed over long distances. The economy bit kicks in when it can use the electric motor and recover energy from braking. Shutting off the engine and using the electric motor for crawling in congested traffic is even better, as fuel economy is absolutely terrible in this regime. A Prius might also be called underpowered when running on petrol, as it relies on the combination of infernal combustion and electric motors to provide full power. As you know, the closer you get to the highest output of an engine, the more the economy suffers. A sports car like a Corvette is built to be fast, so while driving legal speeds on a motorway it will be just pootling along in, or close to, the most efficient range or RPM. A car optimised to provide good economy in cities is out of it's element on the motorway and needs to be thrashed and flogged to go the legal speed limit. 30 years ago or so, when you could still buy a genuinely underpowered car, it was quite common that smaller engined, lower HP engines had consumption specs higher than the more powerful versions. This is because the standard cycle included motorway speeds, which is what they were not built for (and nobody used them for unless in an emergency). This is also the reason why big, overmotorised executive luxury vehicles could easily achieve astounding mileage, while economy cars fell apart after couple of hundreds of thousands of kilometres. The former was being driven at leisurely pace even going quite quick, while the economy car was being thrashed virtually ever second of its use. So yes, while it is possible that a Corvette gets better fuel economy under this test regime, whether you will be getting the same results in real world - even without stomping on the loud pedal - is highly debatable. And finally, you could drive a Corvette like a Prius, but what would the point of owning a Corvette be, then? If you are actually getting better fuel economy than a Prius, you're sitting in the wrong car.

I get the ominous feeling that the "click" joke is in response to a bunch of arm chair mechanics flipping about torque specs. If you look real close, most (if not all that I've seen) have a crush washer like a spark plug. Approximately a 1/4 turn after contact is all it takes. It is also important to note that a good tech develops a feel for tightening torque over time. Clearly, not accurate enough to torque a cylinder head but more than enough to know when "tight" is too much or too little. Some techs get it, and some don't. The truly unfortunate part is the ones that don't usually think they do.

Keep up the good work man, this world needs better techs like you. The shops around where I live can't tell the difference between a battery and a muffler Majority of my repairs are pissed off customers, and fixing other peoples mistakes. I like watching mechanical videos, because I know I am not perfect, we all make mistakes from time to time, but I sometimes learn new things that i didn't before or better ways to do a certain fix, and vice versa i also think in my head what the mechanic in the video could do better. It makes for good problem solving, and less stress.

Discussing the appropriateness of this or that as a daily driver is just inviting the "Rrreeeeeeeeee" community to go hog wild here. I'll be 50 in January, and my idea for a dream daily is something from low-chrome classic cars to a vintage pickup truck. Reality is a 12yo Mariner that gets 19 to 22mpg depending on the season (max AC usage tends to give the mph a huge hit). If I was sure its engine & trans would last a long time longer, I would get it repainted in a two-tone 1950s inspired scheme. I've also spent a lot of time driving my ex's Smart car. They're not bad as long as you don't need trunk space.

I had a muscle car for my daily senior year ride. It got about 8mpg in town and six on the highway. I know it sounds backwards but I drove it with the secondaries backed all the way off so most of the in town was on the front primaries only. It was set up with street treads on it would run 10 to 11 second quarters and 140 to 155 top ends. It did better set up for the strip. You'd have to be crazy to do that now a days. Had to spend one morning a week putting a fresh tune on it. About the only stock part of the car was the metal used to cast some of the parts and in the block. It was a '67' Chevelle SS . Wished I would have kept it, but wished I could have kept what I traded it for but now that I'm near 65 yo I wish I could have kept all my cars and trucks that I had before kids.lol

Im always curious how these type of repairs go. Do you charge the customer for the repair? Do you get paid from the parts seller from a labor claim, etc? How do you ( and the shop) get paid for this work? Obviously you want to take care of the customer, but nobody wants to work for free and the shop always wants to turn a buck. How does this warranty part swap work?

@RainmanRaysRepairs
@RainmanRaysRepairs 2 жыл бұрын
Open loop means that the ECM is not taking any cues from any of the sensors in the engine is running on a baseline set of parameters. Forgive me I forgot to mention that part in the video. Once operating temperature is reached the ECM will go into close the loop fuel control and that’s where it can dial back fuel usage and become more efficient.

@@peteyification The theoretical stoichiometric air-fuel ratio for gasoline is 14.7:1 (14.7 parts air by weight to 1 part gasoline by weight). If the fuel to air mixture is increased (more fuel to given quantity of air) the engine is to be running in a 'rich' condition. If the the mixture is reduced the engine is said to be running in a lean condition. This is easy to understand if you think about the old carburetored engines. The 'choke' on the carburetor was used to slow down the air entering the engine ahead of the throttle plate. This created a 'rich' condition where more fuel was mixed with the air than would normally be needed. A rich condition is helpful in getting a reciprocating ICE engine started when it's cold. The reason is that heat present in an engine running at operating temp helps to atomize the fuel and produce an even burn. When an engine is cold more fuel is need to get things going because a cold engine will not atomize fuel as well. Once the engine reaches operating temp the mixture can be leaned out. "Open loop' on an injected engine increases the mixture ratio (more fuel is added to a given amount of air) to get the engine started, effectively it does the same thing a carburetor choke does.
@yz250a
@yz250a 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrSloika Actually, when cold, the combustion flame front is slowed by the "quench" effect, resulting in incomplete combustion. As the piston and head reach operating temp, the flame front propagates to the perimeter of the combustion chamber, resulting in more complete combustion. Fuel injected engines are less affected by atomization, as the injectors do a pretty good job, regardless of temperature. Whewww!

Hello! Maddening that removing bolts might just be easier with a hot/warm engine. Reducing the chance for burns can make removing bolts harder. BTW Welcome Back! Only just looked at your COVID-19 "vacation" video. As you are in Florida [correct?] natural virus immunity might be acknowledged for employment purposes -- and protected -- unlike some other states. Interesting that there is a noticeable difference (TO MY EYE) between the sensor outputs. I'm guessing that is realistic due to differences in cylinder functions.
