Wow! Times are a changin' We used to check the brake fluid in the 60's and 70's, after the lines rotted away, and it all leaked out.

It's easy to flush the lines that way. :)

I never felt comfortable pushing old brake fluid backwards through the brake system anyway, so I always bleed the calipers directly out when doing routine brake service.

I change my brake fluid when I get my brakes done. For me that’s every 3-5 years. If my brake fluid were to even begin to look like Shrek piss I’m changing it asap.

My 2018 Focus has the original brake fluid and it is clear. I plan in either doing the exchange myself or, having it done when the front pads are done.

2 years? LOL. Up until about 10 years ago I thought it was a lifetime thing. Just add to it. Looks like I need to get out there and service it a lot more than I have.

I am defintly guilty of this and honestly didn't even know it was like anti-freeze or oil in the beginning. Now though, I change it every 2-5 years, depending which vehicle it is and how long I've left it sitting. I know 5 isn't optimal or suggested, but I'm only human an I make mistakes.

The brake fluid in my 2006 F-150 XLT wasn't changed until 2019, I did a brake bleed when I changed the fluid when I did the brakes. (The rear brake pads needed replaced because the friction material was maybe 5mm thick at 98,000 miles). I had done the front brakes at 44k miles to do what I thought was an upgrade, but wasn't. It was a kit that had separate hubs, and the outer race of the bearing was the brake hub itself. The bearings were not replaceable, and the bearings started growling at around 70k miles on the truck. I finally did all four brakes at 98k miles, when I also replaced the brake fluid I used DOT 5.1 (a direct replacement for DOT 4 and DOT 3). DOT 5 is silicon based for racing, DOT 5.1 is the stuff that you normally use, but with a higher boiling point.

If that s what is in your master cylinder then what is in your brakes and brake lines is even worse. I've seen brake pipes at the caliper almost 100% blocked with a crystalline paste due to moisture in old brake fluid. (there are unfortunately workshops that will charge you for a " brake fluid change" where they just put fresh in the reservoir but don't bleed the system through with the fresh fluid....
@brianchudzik7829
@brianchudzik7829 6 ай бұрын
2 years, max, it is important for the moisture out of the system to prevent rust inside. If you are doing hard driving, ie track time, more frequently.

It could be Meth Infused Brake Fluid, that Mexican Cartels use to smuggle across the border? If it starts to crystallize, when a drop is placed on the table, you have Adderall Break Fluid! =O

I purchased one of the testers on Amazon to test for water content but that can be misleading because the fluid in the brake lines and hoses could be worse.

Ideally you would obtain a sample from the bleed nipple
@chrispop99
@chrispop99 5 ай бұрын
Water is heavier than brake fluid, so ends up at the lowers point, usually the rear brakes. You weuol need to test the fluid there. Taking a sample from any higher is pointless.

is there some different ingredients in the brake fluid over there in the us compared to europe? like here in germany it usually gets yellow after some time and eventually darkish after a long time but i never saw it become greenish "shrek piss" though...i mean it's the same dot4 i assume, but something is different kinda i feel like hmmmm

@FreiherrDinkelacker Some mechanics or shops may try to upsell services to get more business. Fortunately, good shops like ours that are always busy have the ability to keep their customers well informed on the condition of their vehicles. This helps our customers avoid even more costly repairs down the road. Think of it like this... If you went to your doctor for an annual physical, and he noticed your blood tests showed that you had early signs of cancer, but he didn't tell you about it at the time. Keep in mind that it's probably early enough to totally cure it at this point... Now, sometime at a future visit, the cancer has spread or gotten beyond the point of being curable... What would you say to your doctor if you found out he knew about it early but failed to tell you? YOU weren't given the opportunity to make an informed decision that affected your health, and now it's costing you big time. It's no different with cars... 😉
