Customized Vacuum Chuck Design

Large thin workpieces are nearly impossible to hold in a vise. This is where a vacuum chuck is the perfect, and sometimes only option. If the part has features that break through, then a customizable top plate is makes the job simple. In this video, Jay Pierson walks through the process in Fusion 360.

Rotating around that point is a good quick shortcut for duplicating those features.

Hey Jay, I think that fixture has some major problems...the contact surface area between the part and the plate will only be the .154 hole the way it's designed. I do a lot of fixturing myself, anf the flow of air below the part you want to hold is very important. Maybe for another vid :)

Yes, with very soft and smooth plastics self gasketing at the hole is possible. For this aluminum plate, air molecules flow easily to the edges of the gasket and don't stop at the edge of the hole. Shallow slots radiating from the hole to the edges of the part are a best-practice as you mentioned. Hi Jay: What is the recommended slot depth and width for a 1/4" (Actual: 0.274) silicone rubber gasket, as I would only like to mill it once? Best - Michael

Slot width should be 95% of the gasket diameter and depth should be 75%.

I dont know how a vaccun fixture work. Just only ine hole .154 dia can hold 756 lb ?

I have a similar part but 3x the size. I notice you're not cutting slots for the vacuum, all you have is a hole. How does that work?

Slots are not necessary unless you're holding very soft materials like nylon which can self-gasket the hole. It's not a bad idea to add slots out of habit though.
