I had mentioned to my boyfriend now that we are living out in the rural area we should get some chicken laying eggs someday.... SOMEDAY. About a week later he walked out of tractor supply and put a box of four 3 day old chickens on my lap. I said "what in the heck am I going to do with these, I know nothing about them!?" Marched him right back in to buy all of the necessities. I almost re-homed them a few times because I doubted myself. It's now 5 weeks later and I can't even tell you how in love I am! He just made them the most amazing big girl house yesterday with runs and ladders etc. I sat out there for hours like an excited nervous mother waiting for them to use their new ladder bc I didn't want to miss it! They are four black ones with a couple lighter spots on them that I cannot identify for the life of me!? Three are quite large and one is the runtish and I just adore her she's my sweet girl. Henlo, friends! I forgot to mention that if your ferment smells alcoholic in any way, obviously don't use it. Sometimes homemade feed contains brewers yeast and that will turn to alcohol if you ferment it. Just thought I would mention that! Also, DO NOT ferment medicated starter. Only ferment NON-MEDICATED feed. :-)

Your life is never the same once you get chickens. They actually require a nominal amount of work and we get to eat the eggs and the chicken, when the time comes. They are a joy to take care of and what I like to call “free country entertainment “. Lol Thanks for the tips on fermenting the food! I’m going to try that! I’m always looking for ways to cut costs but I like our birds to eat well. My garden is made up of foods for us and foods for the animals.

Love this thanks! I've been fermenting my feed the past few months that I've had chickens and haven't been able to find much information about it till now. I just dumped a big scoop of organic feed pellets into a big bucket, filled with water, added a bit of my kimchi/sauerkraut/ferment juice as starter, left it outside with lid with holes, and it turned out great! Smells sweet and bubbles when it's ready. The chickies love it! I just keep adding to that bucket to keep it going. A general fermenting tip - sometimes white stuff will form on top which is a type of yeast, it's not harmful, just skim it away.

Honestly, there is nothing prettier that anyone can wear than a nice smile and this lady has that.

My fiance and I recently got 3 babies after my fiance's cancer diagnosis and they just help alleviate the pressure of everything going on. Your tips and tricks are SO helpful. use a paper coffee filter instead of a lid, put the band around the coffee filter "skirt." That works well with Kefir too

So glad someone feels the same way as me! I got chickens this June and can't believe the joy they've brought to my life. We had a fun game this summer... I expanded garden beds by laying sacs of soil on the earth for a few weeks to kill the grass. When I eventually come to lift the bags off the earth, it's a chicken buffet under there. Thinking about starting a vermicomposter this winter to give them some fresh protein. Thanks for sharing this amazing advice! I'll be trying it with crumble.

I've had pretty good sucess with fermented feed (pellet form) the only time they didn't like it was when I let it ferment too long (5 or more days). If I let it go too long I think it gets too sour for their liking. I drain mine through cheese cloth laid in a strainer once the liquid stops draining I gather the edges of the cloth together and twist the ball of ferment to further drain the liquid. Once I get it to the consistency of moist sand I put it in mason jars and refrigerate what I don't use to slow spoilage. I can't say how long it could last in the fridge as it is usually gone within a few days I've never stored it more than a week. I was told by the farmer that showed me the process not to freeze the ferment as they thought it changed the texture or taste because their chickens wouldn't eat much of the frozen stuff even after it thawed to room temp. Sometimes I collect some of the drained liquid and add it to the next batch to speed up the next ferment.

I heard of one guy that mixes whole grains into a compost pile with an ongoing earth worm population in the pile. He lets the chickens scratch for sprouts, seeds worms, bugs, and keeps churning the pile until part spent, then adds more weeds, etc to the pile with grains until it is nearly ready to use as compost, then he uses part of the old pile as a starter for a new one. Cost is very low. He says he spends less than a hundred dollars per year for what looks like about 30 chickens.

One of my chickens ended up with heart failure (water belly), and I was wondering if it possibly had to do with the salt from the water softener, since I was using the house water (well) to make their fermented feed. I'm now using water from the barn instead just in case. I have to thank you for making my organic feed go so much further. Saves so much money and you don't have to refill their water as often, which is great, too! Your advice changed my life. ;[)

I have a house chicken. She eats a lot of vegetables and fruit with her feed. They make the best pets and they are so smart! She has a car seat and loves to go on field trips. We live in the great smoky mountains of Tennessee and there's so much for her to explore.

You can't possibly explain how much time, care and love (let alone money) you put in for your babies to your friends because they think you're crazy, but as you correctly said that the joy and happiness you get from interacting with them is priceless and instant no matter how much life lets you down that day!

Letting water sit for 24 hrs. will allow the chlorine to off-gas, but the fluoride remains. Spring water, well water, rain water, or distilled water is the way to go.

Last fall I was cleaning up an area that had a lot of aster in it. I have 2-3 chickens that like to work where ever I am and I notice they really loved the seeds that were falling and they would jump up to eat the seeds from the plants. I made up bundles and hung in the chicken coop to dry and would drop a bundle down about every week. they loved it, gave them something to do on the really bad snow/ice days.

Also i heard if a batch starts to smell, meaning possible bad bacteria has been building up, you can use raw apple cedar vinegar to kill all the bad strands and get it back to normal.

This was very interesting to watch. It is the third of your videos that I have watched this evening. My sister has a flock of baby chickens, you see, and she sent me some pictures of them. She then mentioned that she is going to grow sprouts and ferment feed. I thought I need to learn more about this. I really like the way you present in this video. You show all the essential steps and each key step in the process is shown with a "thumbs up". All the steps are simple. You also show feeding the fermented product to the flock. Thank you for a truly excellent video. I understand the goals of providing fermented feed better now.

I have 11 assorted hens and a very sweet rooster. They are "spoiled rotten" and super healthy, because I did my research and learned about fermenting grains. (I was raised on a ranch, but our chicken flock was large and they were not pets at all. My folks 'soaked' grain -mostly oats- 24 hrs for the chickens but never longer, so didn't reap the nutrient boost and digestive benefits of fermentation. I didn't care for "chicken chores" as a kid, but I love my little flock now.)

I’ve tried fermenting their grain and seed mix a couple times and they did not like it. I was so bummed because I sprout and ferment a lot. They don’t care for sprouts and micro greens either. But, I made them an herb garden with wheatgrass and they love it! I plant a tray indoors and let it grow for a 2-3 weeks and let them go to town. I have three trays in rotation. Their fave herbs are lemon balm and peppermint. I also feed them rosemary and thyme.
