At least you get to see the dramatic duels on stage, and most of the murders! SO many blood squibs in my local production of Macbeth, it was a blast pretending to stab Macduff’s wife. The other murderer was played by the “son’s” IRL mother, who was terrified by the direction that she do a dramatic neck-snap on her kid. They wound up practicing it in the backyard, which led to very concerned neighbors but an *incredible* scene.

So basically, as a theatre goer (which I may or may not actually be), I'm paying money and time to be at a place where an actor pretends to see something he doesn't to get me to think that something I can't see is happening, and giving my dormant powers of imagination a chance to stretch from a mind numbing week at work, following explicit instructions and doing exactly what I'm told. It might be a scam, but somehow, I don't mind falling for it one bit. My imagination sings when I'm in the land of make belief, especially when I know I don't have to take any of it seriously.

I find that the most important part of acting is having a really good place to hide my cold beverage. You get sweaty running around saying "My liege" and "Horatio!" all day so you need some ice tea or something to guzzle, and it needs to be right where you put it. If you can make it look like it belongs in the set, the better. More advanced notes: Don't do a play like Hamlet where everyone knows the actual lines. Be Fred in the production, Dude Where's My Fondue Pot. Nobody knows your lines, so you really can't mess up too bad. If you sometimes forget your lines like I do, memorize 8 lines and deliver 4. It's the spare tire method. Nothing more tiresome than watching an actor who's clearly struggling to remember his lines. Makes it all look like a 3rd grade play they force the parents to attend. Even more advanced acting notes: For super realism, if you're playing someone frantic or in urgent distress, interrupt yourself. People will be in awe. "I just came from the battle and they're... We need you now my liege! We can't hold out against the... Sire it's now or never! Please tell us that you'll... Thank you M'lord." This little trick blows them away. It may be a little too powerful. People might think it's real. FYI when you get your Oscar/Tony/Emmy/Cannes/BAFTA/JD Power/Redhead Dramamonkey award, make sure to give me a shout-out. I got more where that came from.
@thejubala14442 жыл бұрын
also if you're being interrupted by another character and the rest of the line isn't written in the script, continue improvising one or two words, it makes the interruption seem more genuine and realistic
