I have a theory: If any of you play League of Legends you know that Sona can't talk and she expresses her sound through her instrument What if because Vinyl had a disability in speaking and because of that she had grown into music in expressing it as her voice?

The fact that we see a soundwave in Vinyl's glasses at the end of Music to My Ears, to me, serves as (admittedly flimsy) evidence that Vinyl has synesthesia, in this case she can "see" sound. Synesthesia is a condition that often develops in people deprived of one of their senses. So yes, I believe that Vinyl Scratch is mute, because she's also deaf!

There are multiple instances of her talking with fluttershy in the legend of everfree movie, and others in backgrounds

I'm wondering if she can, but the creators keep her mute for us. She is the silent nod to us. She doesn't speak because that would detract from all the work Nowacking and others we have done.

I doubt that she is mute, this is what I think She is either: •Secretly shy but is too afraid to admit it •Self-conscious of her voice because she thinks it sounds weird •Worried that if she talks her fans (in their world) will go insane over her •Has been cursed by a villain and can' never talk •Went too crazy one night and lost her voice •Sometimes messes up her words and is embarrassed Well that's what I think anyway

If Vinyl ever gets a voice actor, it should be Ashleigh Ball tbh.

Disclaimer: This is based on what I've read, seen on a documentary, and House MD. I'm likely wrong on the finer mechanics of deaf mutes. Bass heavy music is apparently pretty popular with deaf people (the ones born that way) since they are able to feel the vibrations of the bass and can "hear" it that way. Most if not all people born deaf are also effectively mute. They can still make verbal noises, but talking is highly difficult since they can't hear others or themselves. Which makes initally learning how to make the corresponding mouth movements and vocal cord noises, as a child, to simply say their own name, highly difficult. You've probably seen/felt the effect of not hearing or having trouble yourself speak has, if you've had ear plugs in (or in an especially noisy place), and noticed that your tongue movement is a little off. Specialized coaching for them to verbally speak while deaf, takes a lot of effort. Though honestly, who DOESN'T like the feel of loud bass vibrating in your chest while at a concert or club?

Well, in EQG1 and 3, she did at least MOUTH the words to This is Our Big Night and CHS Rally respectively, as well as in Simple Ways when she shushed Pinkie... And in Magical Mystery Cure, she did laugh at Spike. Sure we didn't actually HEAR her, but... I think she's not mute, she just prefers not to speak. Season 6 is a good chance, but the Nowacking theory is the most evident.

If Vinyl does end up talking in an episode, they definitely would blunder hugely if they don't try to get Jessi (NW) as her voice, since most of the fans (i believe) accept her as the Official Unofficial voice. Bass Cannon.

Well, Vinyl could just be a silent pony. She does enjoy music and partying, but she really isn't interesting in making conversations with others and prefers to communicate using texts, hand, or hoof gestures. Those are just my thoughts.

I love the idea that vinyl is mute! It is so important for all kinds of kids to feel represented and be able to see a character like them.

she can't be deaf as she listens to music and can under stands words, and I doubt she was born with out vocal cords, or lost them due to injury, as she doesn't use hoof(hand) language I guess you could say people could understand her by facial expressions and lip movements, but I sounds unlikely so I guess we will never know

DJ doesn't sing with everyone in S6E08, but she can clearly hear everyone singing as she nods accordingly. That one convinced me, she had no reason not to sing.

In EG: Friendship Games, we see her cheering. Verbally.

The concept of Vinyl being mute is cool! She manages to be the loudest by letting the music talk for her. I’ve seen a clip where she’s mouthing out words to Octavia in the background of an episode, so maybe she’s comfortable talking(?) with Octavia, but for the most part she can’t talk to others. So something along the lines of selective mutism?

I think Vinyl might be a selective mute, so maybe they just talk rarely sometimes but most of the time mute?

What if she's on the ASD spectrum? Sun glasses could be to deal with light, she doesn't rly talk much but can be social, listens to music all the time possibly to limit stress from different noises around her n focussing on just one sound that keeps her going. Some of my friends are on the ASD spectrum and she reminds me of a few of them. It's just a theory, and I don't have authority to say she has it because I don't, but. It's a thought.

What about in the episode Magical Mystery Cure? When Vinyl was watching Fluttershy fail at making them laugh, she started to laugh with the other ponies when they saw spike dancing. Laughter might be more of an action rather than actual words, but still, sound had to have come out of her mouth for that to happen. And well there wasn't an assigned voice to her in that moment, it still implies that she laughed. Whether or not she was heard doesn't really matter, or does it?

Also, the new episode "No Second Prances" shed some more light on this theory, because Vinyl is one of the three ponies that Twilight tries to use to replace Trixie as Starlight's friend, & Vinyl doesn't talk the entire episode!

I dont know if anybody else has noticed this but you can see an OC, Button Mash in Slice of Life. You first see him when Vinal crashes into the first group of ponies, Button Mash ends up landing right next to Vinal. I've always wondered why no MLP channels have talked about.

To me, Vinyl is just the type of pony who only speaks when the plot requires it. Because she's a minor character in the show, she doesn't need to talk, but in fan-made stuff where she's a main character, it's more important that she speaks.

I think Hasbro is scared that if she talks and we don't hear Nowacking shit would go down.

im extremely late by commenting this but she was actually talking to fluttershy in the everfree movie in the background, pretty early in the movie too when they just got their tents. its when applejack and rarity are talking and you can see them clearly when applejack says “just as long as you dont put me in one of your fancy-pants outfits” now we only saw her mouth moving and we couldn’t hear it but she was clearly having a conversation with fluttershy

It's kind of interesting I think to have a mute DJ. It kinda lets her show her voice in how she re-mixes music, letting the music speak for her. Plus, how many mute characters can you count in cartoons? I bet you could count it on one hand

now I'd like to add this. i had a friend how he rarely talked enough that i almost thought he had a vocal condition that makes him lose his voice much easier, but to my surprise he just didn't like to talk often, even at first, when i would ask him questions i thought he could be a mute. my point is maybe Vinyl isn't a pony of many words.

I do have evidence that Vinyl can talk. And its in the Equestria Girls Friendship Games movie. If go towards the end of the film and you look at the scene with dean Cadence Sci-Twi talking on the stairs in front of Canterlot High. You will see in the background Vinyl talking to Lemon Zest and her mouth is moving showing she can talk.

I think that in the next episode that Vinyl appears in, they should have a character throw something at her. People who can't speak can still use their voices, and I'm sure a vocal response is like to come out of Vinyl. If this happens, we'll have a small reveal of what her voice sounds like.

my theori is that she got in to a fight when she was a kid and got punched so hard in the throat that she went mute thus her trying to express her self through her music thus getting her cuttie mark and the one that hit her was octavia , octavia feeling bad for taking one of the most presios things to a pony such as the voice feeling in debt to her and growing to gether every day

Eh, regarding the theory of her not talking because she's been voiced by Jessi Nowack so many times doesn't really lend credence to me, at least, since it should also be pointed out that Octavia, before her first speaking line in Rainbow Rocks and later in Slice of Life, has also had a very specific voice in fan works, Eileen Monty, aka EileMonty. Whereas in her show appearances she was voiced by Kasumi Evans, the singing voice of Rarity. Sure it could stem from the fact that Evans sounded very similar to Monty's Octavia and I do like to admit that Nowack's voice for Vinyl is rather unique and instantly recognizable.

ok, let me just put a small theory here. its basically based on my OC´s behaviour if he was in Daring Do´s situation in case my theory on her backstory is correct. so, first things first: in my theory, Daring Do used to be part of the agency Sweetie Drops mentioned in Slice of Life. i think she was an orphan before and somehow got in there, so it was her only puprose in life at this point. this continued to be the case until the Bugbear escaped from Tartarus and the agency got split up (remember, this is all Daring Do knew except for living on the streets). so, now what i think most people in this situation would do is use the knowledge they gained while being part of this ageny to keep Equestria safe, writing books about it and selling them. this doesnt even have to happen for the sole purpose of getting money (i mean, u saw her home, she doesnt keep a bit the books make), but rather to get other ponies interested enough to actually search for the places in the books. then, they would eventually find Daring Do and she could make a new agency, hoping to restore her former life. if u ask me, this is pretty sad, but also really cool.
