This video illustrates that investing in a Diablo saw blade for your printers aluminum custom t-slot extrusions can give you that extra flat surface for making joining 90 angles which are so important for linear rails and overall fitment and precision.
This will also come in handy when we learn how to create a high quality 3d printer from scratch using the finest materials.
Right now the blade is $40 OFF! 6/10/2018

For those of you who seem to have issues with the obvious. The point of this video is this blade worth it over a standard wood blade, as many of you know you can use a wood blade and cut aluminum on a cheap miter saw. It's unclear what else you seem to derive from it. Sure I can buy a metal cold cutting saw and make a complete new video, but this was never the point. The video is, "is there a benefit to using a different blade to cut aluminium on a saw meant for wood" I am still using this same blade and I cut aluminum extrusions that are 4x the thickness of the ones in this video. The only downside is the motor can get hot as the load increases through the center of the extrusion so I think my blade may outlast my saw. Thanks for reading before commenting.

Diablo aluminum blade on a skillsaw, ideally a worm-drive Skillsaw. Cuts 1/4 sheet and even thicker, no problem. Use a lube for cutting as often as possible- TapMagic works well and I've also found that WD-40 will work well as a lubericant for cutting aluminum, also.

A recent convert here to the Diablo blade, but a long time steel worker. I recently had to make 8' of cut on 1/8" aluminum sheet, and since I had the Diablo in the worm gear saw already thought I'd give it a try. It worked great.

I have used that exact blade for several years while cutting extruded anodized aluminum screen room studs and assembly pieces. I used it also for any wood framing members that were required. I used this blade on my Dewalt 12" sliding compound miter saw........a primarily WOOD saw. My results were always excellent. As with any wood saw, you need to keep the blade squared to your back rails and materials.

As long as your blades have carbine tips for aluminum you normally will be just fine. Just cutting a little aluminum I don't worry about cutting oil too much, unless you need a clean cut. Cutting a lot or harder materials, you want cutting oil or an oil based coolant. Using a quality cutter with good carbine tips and you can cut off more material and have less problems to worry about. You will still get very clean cuts and not worry about heating issues. Cheap bits or blades your going to need cutting oil more often to not only protect the material your cutting, but for the tool itself. Harder materials always need coolant, or you risk damaging your tool and the part your trying to make. If your looking for quality cuts, always use cutting oil. You can't go wrong!

The saws designed for cutting wood have a lot of play compared to saws designed for cutting metal. This is desired when cutting soft material that is flexing and expanding during cutting. However when cutting hard material, this results in an effect machinists call tool chatter. And chatter results in poor quality finish, just like you see in the cuts you made. The problem is the saw, not the blade. Or more precisely, the tool you are using is not designed for the operation you are performing. It will make a cut, but not with the precision and accuracy you want. Make your rough cuts longer and get a machine shop to finish the cuts to size on a machine designed to cutting metal. Or get a mini mill. Or a file and a lot of patience. Or make a jig to finish the cuts with belt sander (no hand-held operations!). Moving from "wood butchery" to precision machining of metal is not as easy as one may think. But anything can be learned if one desires to do so and is willing to put enough effort into it.

I agree alTHOUGH the differences BETWEEN the cuts he achieved ARE due to the differences in the blades. He compared a junk/stock, low tooth count blade with a QUALITY, high tooth count blade. But yes, the overall quality of both cuts? Yes....that's one of the worst miter saws ever made. The tool chatter is off the charts with this particular saw and the throw out is also off the charts. AND it's just an unstable saw. I LOVE Ridgid tools and have MANY and bought this saw and then returned it and got another one and returned it too. Absolute JUNK. EVEN WITH a quality blade, there's STILL too much throw out and vibration, even after letting it spin up FULLY, that if you were to build picture frames with it, the tops of all your miter cuts would not be touching. RIDICULOUS! Ridgid absolutely disappointed with this saw. Rushed, thrown together piece of junk.

But having good work stiff tables and not having to rely on tables "off the shelf" allow you to up your entrepreneur game in small spaces. Ergonomics and working/production space SOOOOOO UNDERRATED. Making a table for the job your trying to accomplish makes work day so much smoother. Also finding good working tops, I have a teflon top on most of my tables so nothing sticks and I can cut and gouge and beat the table all day and its still a flat nice table. And the best part it's CHEAP! I literally have clients who want to come over just to use the giant tables! Try NOT to use them to store things and keep them clear. Good luck!

The wood blade cut speed was higher, I'm assuming you tried to use the same force so that would be from the teeth width I would guess as the non ferrus blade obviously cut better. With that being said unless I had a lot of aluminum cuts to perform getting and storing another blade is not worth it.

China a VS "American Name brand" .. is always a spirited debate, I bought a "grooving blade" my track saw, recently This type of 'grooving blade cuts a pointed 90 degree X up to, 1/4" wide groove .. half way through aluminum sheeting to make neat straight 90 degree bends. It's small diameter (4 inches) ,and cost $29 from China. The "Good Quality one" name prnd one is ALSO made in China and costs $260 !! My idea is abit experimental, and I cannot justify paying alomsy 10 TIMES the ost for the Makita Brand, far as I know they might be made n the same factory??

The wood blade has a different set on the teeth, one left, one right. The Ali blade will have one left, one middle, one right, but the set will be smaller. The gouging you are seeing is due to the larger set on the blade and the bigger gaps between them.

I cut aluminum, usually thin and small parts on miter saws almost every day at work. I have used them and see them used in the field as well cutting much larger amounts. In my opinion, a good quality non ferrous cutting blade is worth it. The cuts are more controlled, smooth, the chips seem to roll off more softly, and the thin parts just about never catch. Same goes for hand held circular saws. Last thing is, I see loads of Diablo wood/ non ferrous blades loose teeth so fast I would never buy them.

Hello!! Nice video an excellent explanation, I cut a lot of aluminum and I've used different brand blades for example (as a reference) starting with worst and cheapest: dewalt, irwin pro series, bosch, herralum, makita and others, then the better blades: CMT orange tools, Leitz, and the best Freud but there are different blades of Freud for example Freud industrial series which is better than the others, then freud professional series and the last which is not bad Freud diablo is basic but works fine, all these to cut thin wall aluminum profile and thick extrusion, if you have to choose for an excellent saw blade I recommend you Freud Industrial or Pro definelly...

Do you have any thoughts on using a saw blade for aluminum (like the diablo) as opposed to using an abrasive disc blade that is found in those metal chop-saws?
@iheart3dprinting951
@iheart3dprinting951 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if they are compatible or not. But I have used abrasive chop saws for steel parts. Assuming the abrasive disks would work in a wood miter saw.... they make alot of dust and smoke that likes to float everywhere and get all over your other stuff. (try to do it outside if you can) The cuts are not as nice and require alot of cleanup (deburring) and they take longer to cut through than carbide saws. I actually think abrasive saws are going out the window as carbide metal tooth dry saws keep getting cheaper both as an initial upfront investment and blade life compared to replacing abrasive disks. I think if you walk into a hardware store you can still get an abrasive saw off the shelf so people keep using them but slowly I am seeing more dry saws come into play. People rave about those evolution dry saws.
@andrewzdanowicz5574
@andrewzdanowicz5574 4 жыл бұрын
Using abrasive discs to cut aluminum is unsafe. Aluminum has a much lower melting temperature than steel and tends to melt, seeping seep into the pours of the disk. Enough molten metal and the disk will heat up beyond its capacity and could explode. Go with the blade. Or get a band saw.

I’m not convinced this is a fair test. Reason being - you’re comparing a 40 tooth wood blade with a 96 tooth aluminium blade. So is the difference in quality due the the blade being wood/aluminium, or the number of teeth? You can get wood blades with high tooth counts for fine finish cuts, they would be a fairer test. What is the actual design difference between a wood/ aluminium blade?
@iheart3dprinting951
@iheart3dprinting951 5 жыл бұрын
If you buy the wood blade for cutting aluminum, the test is already over. The challenge was a generic wood blade everyone probably has, vs spending the money on a purpose built blade.
@thepac-man546
@thepac-man546 5 жыл бұрын
Iheart3dprinting yeah for sure, but that’s not my point. You’re not comparing apples with apples. The difference between a wood and an aluminium blade by design, is the rake angle of the teeth and the depth of the gullet. Wood blades have a positive rake and deeper gullet, aluminium blades have a negative rake and shallower gullet. So it’d be interesting to see how that feature difference affects the cut. To do this you need two blades of the same tooth count. Plenty of people have a fine crosscut wood blade which potentially does the job they want for aluminium.

@iheart3dprinting951
@iheart3dprinting951 4 жыл бұрын
I have never cut a solid piece of stock. But I have been cutting 80mmx80mm T-Slot (about 3x3 inches approx) and 80mmx40mm Tslot. These are thick slots as well so they are meant to be the max strength profile for their size. For reference, in the video those are *light 1.5x1.5" inches. When I cut the heavy duty thick extrusions the motor definitely slows down substantially. I feel it is the limitation of the saw itself combined with the blade diameter (12" in). The motor also smells hot (hot copper smell) on a long cut that I typically don't get when cutting wood or thinner extrusions. I believe it will cut it, but if it's a cut you will be making regularly I think the saw *might* burn out. I know they now have blades that cut actual steel on the smaller 7.25 inch miters, and those don't seem to have the same bog down issue, I assume because of the blade diameter. But then again if you don't have the smaller saw you may as well skip it and go straight to the evolution low RPM dry saws. Also last thing is on the thick materials lubrication is almost a must. It reduces cut time as well. Goodluck.
@willraff6471
@willraff6471 4 жыл бұрын
There's also a wood fine finish blade with 84 teeth that would probably be a lot more similar to the 96 tooth blade. A test like this would tell, but I suspect tooth count plays a major role. Regarding your right angle joints, 80/20 will get the right angle right from the brackets used to connect the joints. You should leave gaps between the extrusions to make sure the right angle from the bracket is enforcing the geometry of the joint.
@vash01000100
@vash01000100 Жыл бұрын
I disagree with that. Thin aluminum such as t-slot, c-channel and others can twist extremely easily. wood finish blades still have their teeth in alternating positions whereas aluminum or non-ferrous metal blades have straight teeth with alternating ones with less spacing. This does make a difference, especially noticeable on thinner material.

Just basic bike chain oil. Obviously its not meant for cutting. But it still makes a noticeable difference in keeping the blades clean looking after each cut and evacuating the chips off the teeth. Also seemed to help make the cut smoother in general. You don't actually need the lubrication, but it does help the process. off camera I was taking an old tooth brush and dipping it in oil and going around the blade as well so the sides of the teeth and blade face are lubricated. Thanks for the comment.

A proper metal cutting saw should have some clamps which were sorta cheating on.

QUALITY wood blades do just as good as your metal blade with aluminum. You used a junk/stock wood blade with way less of a tooth count and compared it to a far superior blade with a much higher tooth count and this is hardly comparing apples to apples. AND you did it on one of the worst miter saws ever made......I tried that saw....two of 'em in fact.....and unstable saw with the worst throw out and vibration of ANY saw I've EVER used. The two problems here are. 1.Your lack of knowledge of cutting blades. 2.Your lack of knowledge of Aluminum Extrusions. The first part of the observation is the amount of teeth on the wood blade, it is used for rough cuts on wood and is really not used to cut Aluminium even though it may say it cuts aluminum.This leads me into the second part of the observation the first blade is NOT A BLADE FOR A ALUMINUM ALLOY, Which aluminum Extrusions tend to be a alloy for strength not just there shape. Now back to the Freud blade that blade has much more teeth which gives a finer cut for wood a smooth cut but again be careful on any aluminum alloy. Aluminum alloy LIKE 6061-T6 Has iron magnesium and other metals in it for strength. So my thoughts you should invest in a metal blade if you want to cut metals even Aluminum.
@iheart3dprinting951
@iheart3dprinting951 5 жыл бұрын
You miss the obvious. Does the Diablo cut better than the wood blade was the question. Cutting blades you're speaking of are on metal cutting saws, the RPM of a wood miter is too fast for those. So that is why we use THIS blade that is meant for THIS saw that most people probably have. I thought you being an expert would understand this? The aluminum extrusion is not 606,1 it's 6063-T6 which is common for extrusions with complex features. How can you comment with such arrogance and not know your alloys? The value of the Diablo blade increases with thicker aluminum cuts that are not in this video but when you get to 80mm extrusions the wood blade becomes a scary option. But thanks for being another commenter who misses the insanely obvious and on top of that is technically wrong.
