In the previous video of the shipping container conversion series we moved and leveled the shipping container, in this episode we are cutting the shipping container and welding the shipping container, and in the next episode we are framing the shipping container.
Previously we moved and leveled the container: • Moving & Leveling - Sh...
Next we are framing the shipping container: • Framing - Shipping Con...
The next step in the tiny shipping container home office conversion is to being making space for the windows and doors, and to weld in the steel frames that will hold the windows are doors in the steel shipping container sides.

Looks great, can I ask why you used metal framing for the windows/doors? Isn’t the strength of a container in the frame not the panelling? And if so would have a frame top to bottom made more sense? Or even wood framing?

Stick welding wasn't a mistake for a job like this; TIG goes a lot slower and is much less forgiving about surface preparation. Started following for the hydroponics but this has been an interesting turn too!

MIG is definitely the better choice. I agree tig wouldn't be right. Far too tedious. Stick really is too harsh for such thin material, it's really hard to get solid welds without blowing through.

Great Videos Vince ! Did you cut the door panel out before you insulated the floor and put the flooring down? Just wondering how you found the right level for the door cut out if the flooring wasn't laid ?

I'm loving your detailed breakdown of the steps and information. I'm sorry if this is an odd question: how tall are you and how high is the container floor to ceiling? Asking to get a sense of ceiling height as I have yet to go stand in one to feel the height.

Slade I'm 6 ft, and with the finished ceiling I've added a total of 4 inches on the top, and the floor has a total of 4 inches also, so I've reduced the internal height by 8 inches in total. There is plenty of head height - this is also a standard height container, they also make high-cube containers with an extra foot or so of height, but I wouldn't bother with one of those.

i want sliding glass doors for my container project. to grind away the corregated walls from the bottom steel bar, to smooth it, which is the best grinder and disc,s to use to save time? i,ve never welded before either, but i have a container project and i must diy, to save money. welding steel for art/hobby is my immediate goal anyway.

i am not a welder either, but they advise to clean the metal before you weld, so the rust should have been prepped before, also i think mig would have been stronger too.

Hi Vince Hope your well. I really need your help. I'm starting a similar project. I don't know what size steel tubing I Should buy for the windows

you mentioned spot welding the door, no need to weld all around. that makes sense to me. and just screw or glue/chalk in to fill. why complex things. you said mic is better for thinner flat metal. stick is for thicker or bars, i,m thinking? ok, i see your list as i scrowed down.

Nice vid. Just wondering... 1. why didnt you weld a complete frame first and weld that into the container? 2. How clean did you cut and how much space was left next to the frame? 3. Did you weld all the way round? Thx ! :)

Hey Dave, 1. I'm not sure, it seemed easier at the time. 2. the cuts were pretty dirty, there were a few mm in some places, and no space in others. 3. I stitch welded about an inch long, every 6-12 inches or so. No need to weld all the way around. And then I've filled any gaps with a mastic/exterior caulk

@@VinceSamios okido. I did weld the frame first measured around the door / windows and then welded them in. To create some backing for the caulk I've used bitumen tape around the frame. More stuff on becomethebox.tumblr.com

Ease of use trade offs, but I'm taking personal responsibility for my safety. In my view a tool that is more difficult to use can be less safe, and I felt more safe using the tool like this.
