You are so funny. I love it. I got this plant as just a leaf cutting 2 1/2 years ago and it's 9 feet now. My ceiling is 8 ft. When i woke i saw the dang fell over. I felt so bad. But it's so nice to know other people like this plant as much as me. 😊

So I tried it!! I cut my Dieffenbachia (was 1,5meters / 4.9feet) in 3 pieces: top with leaves, the middle without leaves and the bottom with roots. I put the top in water, stayed alive but didn't grow (so threw it away...). Put the middle and bottom pieces in soil. Middle piece took about 7 to 8 weeks to grow little leaves, the bottom took about 4 to 5 weeks before I saw difference.

This video is exactly what I was looking for. My dieffenbachias are quite tall now and the sticks barely hold them. And I understand that I can shorten the four and make more of them. I like to put several together in one pot and make a green monster. Don't know whether it is wise to crowd them, but my four guys survived well together.

A common way to air layer higher up is to pull off a few leaves at mid/upper height. Wrap around a clear plastic bag and tie the bottom of it to the exposed stem. Pack the bag with wet Sphagnum moss (you may get away with compost if you can't get the moss). Just don't over or underwater the compost. Then tie the bag off above to the stem. You now have a self contained bag ideal conditions for root growth. As the new roots grow, you see them through the moss/compost. When you're happy you have enough root growth, cut off beneath the bag and remove both bag and moss. (If you've successfully used 'compost' just remove the bag). There's no need to remove the compost and disturb the roots. Plant into a new pot in compost. Cut your original potted plant to a height you like. New shoots will grow from it. It at least gives you a back up if the new plant fails for any reason.

This was so helpful. I have one of these plants and I love it, but it can’t support itself and the stalks are leaning. This will help me to give it a chance to continue growing, just a little different.

My boyfriend has 2 of these plants. The one is doing exactly as you described about hanging over the side of the pot.... it actually flipped itself the other night off the stand it was on lol. Thus is why i am here looking to see how to start a new plant. He also has one that is well over 7 foot tall but only has leaves on the top couple of feet

@roselynmvm

@@PokyHighKid you can get bamboo or wood stakes (or a metal stake like in this video) and tight the stems to it with laces (I use velcro). That would keep the plant up if you don’t want to cut it. Cutting is not necessary unless you want to make more plants, or if the plant is not doing well and curling up and down weirdly.

@@PokyHighKidStake it w/ sturdy rod .The stalk is fairly flexible.Maybe paint rod green before using so less obvious.I've done on big old diffenbachia.Works.

I would like to cut the top off to stop it from getting any taller. Can you tell me how many notches to cut from the top. It keeps on shooting new leaves. My plant stands about 9feet it already has three baby's in the pot with it.

Can I put the top cutting straight into soil or should it be in water until roots come out? My top cutting would be around 4 feet right now. The total height of the plant is about 8 feet. But is very bare stalk and leaning very top heavy. I want to cut the top part but I'm afraid of not getting new roots and killing the plant.

On Diffenbachia, is it possible to get lower leaves to grow on the bottom bare stock? Mine is 5.5feet high and very healthy and staked.I just want the bottom fuller. Can you do this as per Scheflera?
@HousePlantJournal
@HousePlantJournal 7 ай бұрын
The best way to make the bottom look fuller is to air layer from just below the lowest leaves so that when you chop it (once new roots have grown), those lower leaves will be closer to the base of the plant.

It's a staghorn fern (Platycerium bifurcatum). It's not technically an air plant (Tillandsia genus). Staghorn ferns are mounted to a board with sphagnum moss. I've had this plant since 2014 - I love it!
