This is a really simple process that works for most houseplants! The only real exception would be succulents, which have their own process! I hope you all enjoy even this video was a bit messy :)

This may be obvious to most people, but question is, where do I keep my vase of water and cuttings while I’m waiting for roots to grow? I’m trying this with my philodron selloum. Thanks for the tips. They are so helpful.

Just place it near a window or somewhere the cuttings can get bright, indirect light

Super helpful video! Thank you! Would yulou recommend this for a schefflera? I've lost a lot of bottom leaves and now my plant is recovering and has beautiful new too growth, I'm looking to make it less leggy!

I haven’t worked with schefflera specifically but you can certainly try it!

Any plants with stiff segmented stalks: ficus(rubber plant), schefflera, etc can be propogated, but airlayering is a more reliable method of doing it than just cutting the stems and trying to get them to root in water. Look it up😊

What did you do with the original base of the plant? Does it regrow after you cut all the branches off?
@JoshuasGarden
@JoshuasGarden Жыл бұрын
In many plants it can regrow! I just didn’t have a need for the base of the plant since I only wanted one plant, and I would prefer to use the cuttings over the original plant. It would grow back thicker if you cut the entire plant back though!
@tommon02

@@JoshuasGarden Thank you, I’m trying it. It got some mold and I put some hydrogen peroxide on the soil. It looks as if some of the trunks of the plants are maybe dying though. I think this is a process that is best for warm weather. 🤞

The old stalk will put out new shoots. If the stalk is still leggy cut it back until there are only a couple of nodes above soil level. There may even be multiple new shoots.😊

Great video is there any plants you shouldn't cut
@JoshuasGarden
@JoshuasGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Great question! I’m honestly not too sure, I just would say some plants like peace lilies won’t really respond in the same ways. This is more for plants that have long stems and use a decent amount of water. The other exception would be succulents, which you can certainly still cut but it’s a bit of a different process. I actually will be showing that soon too!

Will thia work for a miniature rose? Mine is leggy and I don't know what to do 😢
@JoshuasGarden
@JoshuasGarden Жыл бұрын
Hmm, a rose may not benefit in the same way many houseplants do. I would recommend cutting back some of the leggy growth and putting it in the spot that gets as much light as possible. If you live in a place where it gets cold in the winter, you should wait until nights stay above freezing and put it in a sunny location. You’ll have to start in a shady spot for a couple days and slowly bring it into the sun so you don’t scorch the leaves

Question: Joshua; Why did you transplant all of the cuttings into one pot? It looked rather crowded in there. Thank you.
@JoshuasGarden
@JoshuasGarden 6 ай бұрын
Some plants (in a lot of people’s eyes) look better when multiple cuttings fill the pot and give it a full look. But you can put them in individual containers too!

Thanks! One more question. I'm getting ready to follow your steps. I have four (very) leggy stalks in one pot. After I cut the tops, and put them in a vase--Can I cut back the remaining leafless stalks to about six inches or so? (more/less?). Once cut; do I leave the beheaded stalks alone? If they grow; that's good. If not; I'll retire them to the compost. Thank you again; most appreciated. (Many years ago; I cut back a lovely plant; its name escapes me.) Foolishly; without thinking; I applied a layer of Vaseline to each stalk. The plant slowly drowned. :( It turned to mush; unable to respirate. Why did I do this? I had seen cut trees; with tar applied to their trunks. In retrospect; the city probably didn't want them to regrow. Thus; the (unbreathable) tar coating. Lesson learned; too late for my poor; lost plant. I won't do it again.

My citronella plant is so leggy it looks like it wants to go for a looooong jog!!! Does this work for outdoor potted plants as well??? Help!!!!! 🤭😂😂🤣
@JoshuasGarden
@JoshuasGarden Жыл бұрын
If they are outside I think it would be best to check a few things. Too much fertilizer and not enough sun would be the primary reasons. A citronella needs at least 6 hours of sun. You can try pruning it back by about 1/3 and giving it more sun!
@stephenB49

Once a stiff segmented plant: ficus(rubber plant), schefflera, dieffenbachia, etc. loses leaves the leaves will not grow back and the plant will get leggy. This is natural. The older leaves die and fall off. Cutting the plant back is the only way to make it look better. Airlayering is a more reliable method then just cutting the stem and trying to get it to root in water. Look it up and try that method😊
@hugs2you
