This is my successful attempt at cutting down an air rifle mainspring. Following the instructions of Davy T of the Vermin Hunters in is vid on their channel.
The spring was a Titan XS No.7 spring, I cut 5 coils off so it would fit in my ASI Gamo Cadet. Having put it all back together I reckon it could do with another 2 or 3 coils coming off. I'll do that soon using this same technique.
Cheers
Jim

Hi, James. Looks like you had a successful de-coiling of a spring there, good job. I'm was going to do a de-coiling myself after watching Dave's tutorial, but I was still uncertain that I would balls it up, but after watching your video you've given me the courage to do it myself. Oh, well, If I muck it up I'll just buy a new spring. Thanks for posting. Pete.

Will you make another video but this time show how you heat it up and bend the coil ( the part you left out )( the part we all wanted to see ) .

First time ages I've checked this vid, I didn't even know it had comments on, let alone over a thousand views! So apologies for the slow replies chaps. Pete, you're very welcome, sometimes it's best just to give these things a go as confidence is most of the battle. I hope yours went well. George, it's just branded as 'El Gamo A.S.I Cadet High Precision' not sure on anything beyond that. sorry.

I recently purchased a spring for my BEC Eurolux. I had to buy one for a RWS, but its too long. I think im gonna have to cut it down

Hi James, What Cadet rifle were you fitting this to? I'm currently doing up a Gamo Cadet Delta with a Titan XS spring. Thanks George

can you use water instead of oil to cool it?? so you used the wood instead of pliers to set the end is right??

Some springs are too long and either become 'spring bound' before the gun is fully cocked, or produce too much power, so the spring needs shortening

Tuning air rifles is interesting but I feel most proffesional tuners out there misunderstand how the spring deliver its power to the pellet. How many coils? Cutting coils? Thickness and so on...First. cutting off a coil is pointless. If a rifle off the shelf comes with a too long mainspring it shouldnt be able to lock in the cocked position at all. It would stop before. That dont happen a lot. A too short spring is worse since you cant reach the optimal power. The length is partly relevant cause it has to do a bit with the volume of the air pushed and transferred into the barrel behind the pellet. Some tune airguns to gain some power from squeezing in something behind the spring. It does have an effect due to the new compressed position but its really adressing the problem from the wrong end. It does not increase the volume and neither does it change the pellets speed. It can affect the kinetic energy a few percent sinci a slightly more powerful spring can throw away a sligthly heavier bullet. However its not how to do it. If you can tune an air rifle the mainspring is not correct from the beginning and you should try to change it. Power comes with thickness, few coils ( larger action and moved air volume ) and the total length. A thicker spring do not move faster but it can deliver heavier pellets at the same speed thus increasing muzzle energy and power. A shorter spring will lead to just that but only a few percent but will not increase the air volume and speed. A tuned airgun should be tested with optimal pellet weight. If you just tune or cut coils to increase speed you're way off. The CPI cant be changed or stretched without damaging the spring. It comes with a specific CPI from the springmaker. If you wanna make your air rifle stronger then order a custom built spring. Calculate the number of coils based on the compressed length ( should be the same ) and increase coil thickness. Usually a thicker spring comes with fewer coils. More stress and shorter lifespan however. Thats somethingcto consider unless you're gonna rebuild the entire rifle. To buy a custom built mainspring can make your gun resch 45 ft lbs with a break barrel and kicks like a horse. Pardon my english im european

Well I bought a spring and guide set for my HW35, also good for HW80! Therefore I had to cut spring down to suit the shorter stroked 35.

More power worse accuracy with a spring piston air rifle mate. And they tune the rifles so the action is smooth not for More power. the smoother the action the better the accuracy

@@jamiewilliams8940 just completed an original 50 177 which is at 7.5 fpe, shooting beautiful, yeah I could make it more powerful but hey what for? And this week just finished a 177 original 45 which is 8.5 fpe. Both over 40 year old and can shoot great. Less power more accuracy is definitely the way to go, the power freaks hit nothing with their Springer's I'm sure LOL 😂

@@24745037 it's makes me laugh when people say they've had their rifle tuned.and all they've done is put a service kit in and they want the power at 12 ftlbs not knowing if they set the power at 10.5 ftlbs 11.2ftlbs they would have a lot better results with it mate. I've just been servicing my heanal mod 303 and webly jaguar today buddy think that's similar to the original 45 ain't it mate?

@@jamiewilliams8940 not sure about the similarities buddy, all I know is, 9 FPE is perfect for just about anything, mind I have modern 35s shooting absolutely fantastic at tad under 12 FPE, but I'm a firm believer that less is more, these days I only paper punch, however shot 4 rats this week with a 40 year old 35 and trapped 3 let them go down the marsh. I don't like killing but rats are rats.
