Today (well.. yesterday) we cut the soap from our new slab mold!
Sorry for the video length, but I wanted new soapers to see what happens in real time. I feel like many other soapers online make things seem way too hard or way too easy. Cold process soap isn't rocket science but there is some work involved.

If you end up with a bar that is too thin, just package it up as a "sample" and include it with orders over $50.

You've given me the confidence to finally make a loaf of olive oil soap. Did that in June. It turned out great! I made another batch this weekend. The soap seems good but I didn't cut it well. Thought I'd try using a cheese knife. Bad idea. So I have really artisian bars! I ordered a wire cheese cutter on a metal board. I hope that works better.

Hey uncle john. Dunno if you tried this, but if your cuts end up with an extra end peice, you could chop those up into small sample size bars and send them with the bars you sell over the net, that way people can smell something they normally wouldn't buy without testing it first.

Hi Jon. I am new to soap making and my next door neighbor had a fire in the house out house (thank God) didn't burn down but we still had smoke damage so I had to throw out just everything. I think that the worse part is that I had to throw out my cutters, mold, and things like bath bomb mixtures. I have to start all over again. Could you advice me on the things that are most important? I went nuts when I decided to make soap but lords knows I can't do that now
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 3 жыл бұрын
Wow! Sorry to hear that! I guess the most impor6parts would be (besides raw materials) kitchen scale, a way to mix by hand or stick blender, cheap bowls to mix and melt in, home-made molds (wooden ones are pretty easy to make), a way to cut the bars. I plan to make a how-to video about building a loaf mold and a single bar cutter that's reliable and accurate. Not sure what I'm leaving out.

I use freezer paper from Wal Mart. (Mines not 24 pounds.) It lifts right out. I think cutting the freezer paper takes less time than taking apart the mold, if it would hold up
@unclejonssoap

I just like taking the sides off to make it easier to get those corners creased. Even when I used freezer paper, it was after with two ends out of the way.

Quick question. I make hp soap primarily but and getting back into cp soap because I can make more soap at a time this way. How long should I let 15 lbs of soap sit in the mold before unmolding?
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 3 жыл бұрын
I can unmold my 24 pound slab after 24 hours. Sometimes, I have to let the slab sit out of the mold for a day and then cut that into loaves. Them, sometimes the loaves have to sit for a day before cutting into bars. So, it really depends on your recipe, how cold or hot it is, and what the humidity is like in your location. But I would say that you should be able to cut into loaves and bars within 3 days at most.
@countrylathersoapworks
@countrylathersoapworks 3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate it. I live in south Mississippi so I may need to allow it to sit a couple of days before I unmold it.

Hi Jon, do you happen to know of any place based in the US that makes soap cutters like these? I have searched around before and saw them for prices in the $300 ballpark, but that is too much for what I do. These cutters are reasonably priced but the shipping puts you to still being around the $200 price point. I am just making soap for personal use/holiday gifts and can justify the cost, but not with the additional shipping.
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 3 жыл бұрын
This Russian guy is going to be the best price even with shipping. The best bet is to get a local carpenter to make a single wire cutter using a guitar string and tuner. If you're good with a knife, a kitchen blade works well too! They're just not as precise. Hopefully, we'll be making a single bar cutter once the molds get going.

Could you rig that with wing nuts instead of having to use a screwdriver?
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 3 жыл бұрын
I could! That's one of the things Meaghan and I talked about off camera. The screws are solid, the luggage latches are nice (if you can line them up..lol) but wing nuts would sort of solve the whole issue and be more cost effective. I need to experiment with a set and see how it goes.
