Much admiration. I am an older woman who loves making things too but I would have been stuck on figuring out the square for the bevel edge. Like your methodical approach . Largest miter saw I used was 10" but now that I'm 75 I downsized to a sliding 7-1/4. Enjoyable video and will watch more.

Hi Sue, 1. Get some head wear to keep your hair away from the machinery. We used to call them snoods, like a baseball cap with a hairnet attached. 2. On my saw I use trigger clamps onto the back plate or under the bed. 3. If that were me I would have used a half joint where the diagonals cross, quite easily machined with the mitre saw :)

Thanks John. I have a lot of hair and it was tied back but I'll have to look at better ways of securing it. Thanks for the tips. It was just practice, and basically I was only replicating the type of cuts I have to do at work.

@@SueRhodes I put mine in a Phony tail and yes I'm a man and my hair is way longer then your's. You get your hair caught in even a hand drill you'll know it. And you can do it with a hand drill let alone a drill press.

Hi Sue, that was a great decision, to buy a mitre saw and the more you use it the more you will be happy with it. I have a Bosch GCM 8 SJL in my workshop and I also take it out to the job side. It is absolutely versatile und you see it on your own project how precise and clean cuts you can make. The DeWalt blades are fantastic. I use them in my table saw and my circular saw. What is very useful to have is a zero clearance insert in the table and a table extention, so you can better clamp down the timber. I like your jigs. They work great!! Take care Jerome

A useful tip if you want to take the tiniest amount off the end of a piece of wood (like in the video). WITHOUT STARTING THE BLADE RUNNING, drop it to the down position. Then run your piece of wood up and just touch the blade. Do not move the wood. Return the blade to it's resting position thrn make a saw cut as usual and the blade will take off a fraction of a mm, with a nice clean cut. 90° cuts obviously. 👍

Very important if you would like to saw with precision. Always choose a Miter saw with a handle positioned in a vertical line above the saw blade. Everything must be aligned, slide rails, handle, and saw blade, it is much better this way the blade will not tilt. Because there is some torsion in the aluminum housing . And choose an engine with softstart on it to prevent wear of the gear and worm shaft. It is very important that everything is aligned. Here are some examples to show how the handle must be positioned above the blade. Bosch gcm 800 sj / Bosch gcm 8 sjl / Evolution rage 3 / FESTOOL KS 60 / / HITACHI C12RSH2 / FESTOOL KS 60 E KAPEX / Metabo KGSV 72 Xact . (This also is the case with the Miter saw without the slide rails). If you want you can test it yourself at home if there is torsion in the aluminum housing. Step-1. First you make a saw cut from +-5 mm deep in to a flat piece of wood. To this with the normal handle positioned on the right side of the Miter saw. Step-2. Then repeat this by pushing the saw blade down with your hand (finger) on the aluminum protective cover were the saw blad is cased in. Just now only do this without the running engine. Step-3. Now you can see if the saw blade will be positioned in or next to the saw cut.If the saw blade is (+- 0,2 / 0,5 mm) next to the saw cut then there is torsion in the aluminum housing. Step-4. therefor it is much better to choose a Miter saw with the handle positioned vertical in line above the saw blad.

That's a fantastic, down to earth review that I was very pleased to see. Congratulations on the work. The angles were all done well and you picked up on the clamps, which certainly need to be improved on as they are rather sloppy and let down the saw. Well done and an excellent job with the camera work that showed everything needed. I do hope that DeWalt appreciate your review.

Well, this is all pretty slick and very impressive. You wouldn't catch me doing that nightmarish _diagonal_ compound brace in probably a million years. I would surely chicken out on that deal. I ain't gonna do anything that requires clamping on a miter saw. (I have two Dewalt sliders and basically never see those clamps, anyway.) Love the accent - half Irish and half British? I get kind of confused when it's clearly not one or the other (at least to me).

It and like you may have over complicated it a little. I would have used the same jig that you used for marking the other cuts and cut the bevel down to that mark. Kudos for getting it done though. Thank you for your excellent video. Having used Japanese pullsaws for years I have decided to treat myself to a seventieth birthday present of a mitre saw. I read a review of a Festool I was thinking of and the guy said he preferred the 717. I see your video and now am split. If it were only about price I would go with the De Walt. In my small atelier I make Art Deco furniture for my home. Lots of hardwoods, which is probably immoral these days, which I hope will be around long after I am gone. I won’t criticise your finished product. I’m a rare product these days, a gentleman. Cabinet making is all about learning something new every day. It is a great journey that never ends. Buy a second blade, same as the first. Keep them sharp and you will always have that almost mirror-like cut. Bon voyage!

There's a much easier way to do that, use a mini carpenters sliding bevel to gauge the bevel angle of your timber, lock the bevel and transfer it to the mitre saw by holding it against the blade and saw base and then lock off the saw tilt - get it exact. Lay down your diagonal piece on the table and position your frame over the top of it, mark with a pencil where the brace meets the frame and the take to the saw and enter the cut at the line - the exit angle will correspond automatically providing you transferred the bevel angle to the saw well enough, use a scrap piece fist. BTW put your hair up, accidents happen much faster than you think and always when you least expect them - I hate to be gruesome but that mitre saw has plenty enough torque to snap your neck if your hair caught in the arbour.
@SueRhodes6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the ideas. I actually make gates which are boarded first and then braced. Your idea of laying the frame over the brace unfortunately wouldn't work for me as the boards are first fitted to the opposite side of the frame. I've also learned another way to do this using a long straight edge and carrying the angled top line over the brace first to mark where to cut, other than using the jigs. It's the same principle, but I can apply this easily to different depths of braces. My hair was tied back, but I take your point for sure. I usually wear it higher on my head.

If you don't like the clamp don't use it. I never do. Festool is a cadillac compared to a vw bug te dewalt. It will get ya there but its not in style. Funny how my analogy compares a german car to an american made car but the tools are the reverse but both built in China in the same factory.

Was the light on the saw that illuminated the cut a factory feature or something you added? If you added it, what product did you use?

I think Dewalt names it "XPS" light - in Germany we call it "Schlagschatten". Like Festool uses.
@hotdog1604 жыл бұрын
I really hate Dewalt's motors, it starts very sudden, so it makes a little chock that can move your piece of wood (you have to overclamp it so) That's why I got my wallet empty by Festool and Mafell 😪
@OldButHappy6 жыл бұрын
Nice review Sue. It looks like the saw's dust collection works well? According to this: www.reviewshelpful.com/tools-home-improvement/7164541.html the Festool clamp sort of fits the DW717 if the standard clamp gets on your nerves too much.
@SueRhodes6 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Colin, I will definitely be buying myself a couple of Festool clamps! Thanks for pointing out to me that they will fit. The dust collection seems poor, but I have it attached to an old hoover that's not powerful enough, so not the fault of DeWalt at all. I will be finding an alternative or buying a connector to attach it to my Record Power extraction unit soon.

It’s probably safer to grip the wood firmly with your left hand well away from the blade than using a dodgy clamp that causes the wood to move. Better still to use an improved clamping system.
