Another "Fire Axe Test"! This is a term referring to showing how deeply a given sword can cut, since very often this question will be asked when comparing two different types of swords. In practice if you just want something to cut really effectively, grab an axe! Swords have to be able to do many many things, of which cutting is among them.
That said, all of us still want to know how well the perform at cutting, and this type of comparison might yield some data. And it can be fun!
So here being compared are the
Fiskars Latin Machete
Hanwei Practical Plus Wakizashi
LKChen White Serpent Jian
LK Chen LongQuan Jian
Lk Chen 1796 British Light Cavalry Sabre
LK Chen Niuweidao
LK Chen Song Hand Dao
LK Chen Yuan Mongol Dao

Very interesting test. Probably a testament of the important of good apexing of the edge, rather than the capability of different blade profiles and geometries. That "Longquan Jian" by LK Chen really surprised me. I know it's an extremely lightweight sword, looks the profile is very conducive to good cutting and the mass distribution makes it very easy to reach terminal velocity therefore reaching the maximum damaging potential of the sword with little effort.

Yeah, I started with it as the first of the “sharp” swords as I really did not expect it to go that deeply. To be honest even the White Serpent performed quite well! Those LK Jian are not to be slept on in terms of cutting power 💪🏻

We are so lucky you didn't use an original nihonto and accidentally cut through the box and then through the planet and then the spirit world. All joking aside, I am surprised the oxtail dao didn't get damaged by cutting through the box and hitting the ground.

Interesting video. The Yuan Mongolian Saber surprised me - I thought it would do better. But it definitely had some challenges with the specific setup that previous swords didn't. Shame you couldn't get any cuts in with the messer.

Hahah yeah this is always the challenge: a lot of sword guys love seeing a target get sliced clean in two but I get really excited when there are targets that can Stymie blades and then you can compare how they perform. This cardboard was pretty tough, but like you saw, if the blade is sharp enough then all of the other factors (geometry, inertia, blade nodes) kind of don’t matter 😂

Scary sharp FTW 🤘💀 remember the only difference between science and screwing around is writing it down.

@@dlatrexswords I have been into History forever and interested in swords forever too. About two or three years ago I retired and decided to get into it. I now have a collection of 3 "battle swords" and three short swords and a number of interesting knives. I may have a lead on a Blucher sabre available locally and that may be my next purchase. I mostly want all the sword info and usage info as I can find. There is no HEMA club nearby but I'm going to start learning British Military Sabre in my tiny living room from YT and see what happens. I have even done some pool noodle cutting in my room with interesting results,. Thanks for your reply and best wishes. Cheers!

I would like to see a cutting test like this ( with different swords ) on a tatami mat ( or something similar) wrapped in a t-shirt or jeans.

Yeah I will plan to do some textile cutting in the not too distant future. And I am accepting tatami donations.
