I have been mowing with a 3 point finish mower for 14 years. I love it! Have good luck trimming around trees and any obstacles. Also like the fact there is no grass blowing in my face. I have no problem hooking it to the tractor or unhooking it. And I am 75 However it is always hooked up and unhooked on level pavement in a pole barn. The first few years it was in a shed with an unlevel gravel floor. That was a bit challenging. But I was a young dude then in my early 60s.

The side view videos mowing up, over, and down your "hill" very clearly show the benefit and design of the floating 3PH top link mechanism. It's very interesting to see just how the top link connection extends and retracts as needed for the mower to independently follow the ground's contours relative to the tractor. Excellent!

What my dad used to do and I have done before is leave the 3rd arm off and use a chain in it's place for a bush hog. I have even left it off completely at times and let it ride on the rear wheel. It depends on the terrain. I got tired of the bush hog either digging into the ground or being 3' off the ground when you're trying to mow.

Katriel, It was great hearing your voice. We miss seeing you in the videos. Tim, I started out with a rear finish mower and loved it. When I upgraded to a new tractor I got a mid mount deck. As a Kubota BX owner, I have to say the rear finish mower is much easier to remove than a mid mount. Christi, To me it always seemed easier to trim with the rear mower as I got good at backing around the trees. I imagine it is really easy with a HST. Stay safe and God Bless. Thanks Tim & Christi, your demo was on target. I considered a rear mower. Right now I use my mid-mount mower and hook-up is the issue for me. my knees are shot and the mower is a heavy beast. I used to be pretty dang strong and now the weak side of me is starting to take over🙂. I liked how your rear-mount finish mower followed the contour of your hill. I think you said you had to adjust a few things. Thanks for the video and have a fine weekend. 👍🏽

I got a brush hog for my 1025 and noticed the offset cut it was while dragging - got used to it but I used my 'belly' fine cut at the same time and I would cover the turning issues. I still leave stripes of grass as our property is with trees and dogging things. Roads are another issue when they curve. Both is best and in high weed or grass that what isn't cut with the 'belly' mower the drag would pick up. Often they would share. Thanks for the dragging fine cut mower demo.

Another benefit of a belly mower is that it lowers your center of gravity which is great when mowing on steep slopes. My 62D deck weighing 422 lbs and hanging low between the wheels adds stability.

I have the 84 inch version branded Phoenix. At over 800 lbs the thing is a beast. I originally had the solid tires on it but my fields are so rough I broke the wheel support arms twice. I got a set of pneumatic tires on it and it is much better. Quieter too. As you learned with the lower arms, they are designed to pivot. It is the easiest 3 point implement to attach because of the pivots in all three attachment points. I don't even try to trim with mine. It is too big and if you get to close you will destroy whatever you hit...including fences. The long deck is nice for getting under pine trees. Also as you mentioned the rear discharge prevents you from throwing grass where you don't want it. I mow between my fruit trees and berries because I hate having to pull grass out of the beds.

I have been using a rd60 woods rear finish mower behind my kubota for several years now and love it. It does take some getting used to. The main thing about its operation to me is it works best in an open yard. The more obstacles to mow around the more I would want a mid mount mower. However with my yard it’s a great compromise. I can switch out attachments in a matter of minutes. The noise level is lower and the tractor stays cleaner with the rear mount especially the radiator and air filter.

Definitely agree about needing to concentrate on how much equipment you have off the back of the tractor with a rear mower. My old Wheel Horse D200 had a rear mower and it was definitely a learning curve getting used to it. While I am intrigued with the fact that this mower can ride on the gauge wheels, which I think will provide a more even cut than a mmm, I agree with you that a mmm is the way to go if you have the option. I know a lot of people are very critical of the mow quality on the 54D and 60D decks for the JD SCUTs in forums, but I have found with some careful adjustments on the lift mechanism to get the gauge wheels just off the ground when the deck height is set, my 60D does a really good job on my yard. Thanks again for the video. Great info and evaluation for anyone who has the need for a rear mount mower. God Bless.

Thank you! Think you helped me decide on a 72" for the 2025R! I 1025R can handle this, I'd think the 2025R will be good to go! (I really dislike MMM). Can't wait for the spring! As always, love your videos! SO helpful in making important and expensive decisions! Oh:PS: Side mirrors are helpful for Rear mowers! Also, yes, you can do MORE mowing with Rear Mower. You can tuck right under trees and shrubs. As long as you are careful, I find the Rear mower better in most every possible way. They also take a lot more of a beating on count they are floating and can jump obstacle. MMM are begging to be damaged as there's very little movement or give. Figuring most folks who own Sub compacts or compacts have larger open yards, rear mowers are really just better all around IMHO. So much less to go wrong.

Good demonstration! My dad has a 770 Deere with a 6ft king kutter rear mower. The biggest disadvantage I’ve seen is on steep slopes going around the hill it will try to pull the rear of the tractor down. The caster wheels try to turn downward which pulls on the tractor. Both mid mounts and rear mowers have there advantages and disadvantages. Personally I like my mid mount mower best. Have a good day!

For a while I had a 3PH finish mower. There are some disadvantages to a deck behind you, but you can learn to work with those. My reason for not keeping it has more to do with my tractor or rather the R-1’s on my tractor. I totally hated the tread marks left in my yard when the yard was damp. The expense of new wheels and tires for my 4x4 tractor were more than I wanted to spend when I had a different mower. It was a deal I ran across (actually made a profit on selling that mower even considering repairs I did). I went back do me doing trim while my wife mowed or doing one after the other if need be.

Tim, I have owned that same mower "BREEZE" since 27, July, 01. I bought mine from Castongia's INC. Rensselaer IN., I paid $1710 for mine. Tim, after the first few years of owning my mower, all four wheel yokes had to be welded back on, blade spindle bearings worked their way up and off a blade spindle shaft after the cast iron belt pulley came off and got ground down so badly it had to be replaced. After me and the SIL put everything back together correctly the mower has run flawlessly. I don't know if the same people run Rhino today as when I bought my mower, I thinking they don't, but I can say today, I love the way the mower mows and for the money I'm not complaining. .

I have been using a JD 4700 tractor with a JD 8’ brush hog for many years. I cut a field with hundreds of pvc sprinkler heads 4’ tall and 12’ apart. Once I mastered how the rear mower reacts I enjoyed using it. I like not having the lift mechanism under the mower when I take the mower is off. I’ll definitely have a rear finish mower on my tractor when I purchase next Spring.

Compact (Kub) owner For tail mowing or trim mowing as you called it, it is necessary but easy to catch on to. I installed left and right mirrors. Left being convex for wider and further rear view (some road transfers) while a standard mirror on the right aimed at mower side and rear discharge area. Rear discharge is great for higher or occasionally mowed areas. NO windrows. Heavy cuttings are mulched into non existence on the next mowing after dry. Width placement is easy just by going off your front wheel placement. Mower is XX nches wider than tractor ( front wheels)is your mowline. Turn by realizing the tractor and mower are one piece and almost twice as long. Mow PAST where you would mow with a belly mount BEFORE you start your turn. Its a different techique but I greatly prefer it over bellys. Thx for the contert. Imforming and diverse as always.

I’ve mowed 32 acres a week for a good many years with my rear discharge mower. Mine has a flex hitch which is top quality when mowing on hills and uneven ground which my ground is. I’ve went completely mowing with a Scag TigerCat zero turn mower. My RDM is a 72” and the zero is a 61”. My cut time with the zero has cut my mowing time by about 2.5 hours per mow got 1400 hours on the zero now I’ll keep my RDM forever though especially for first time contract mow jobs.

Hi Tim. I have used both belly mowers and finish mowers. Both have pros and cons. I prefer the belly mower. I found twisting around to see the finish mower gave me personally issues with my back. The finish mower did allow me to mow ditches when wet where I could back the finish mower down into the ditch to mow it.

Once you learn the back in trick, I actually find the 3 point mower can reach more places. I have lots of trees rocks and boulders, I can hitch the mower about 6 inches to the right, and watch exactly where it is as I drive along the fence line. I can back in tighter around trees, and it gives me an extra 6 inches off the tractor. Sometimes you have to remove the ROPs if it is safe ground and the trees have low hanging branches.

I have one on one of our Oliver 550s, it works great. Same thing with our brush hog. My only complaint is when you’re backing up to the tree to trim around it, you are putting it in reverse, backing up, putting it in a forward gear, move the tractor, put it in reverse and so on. The best part is I can go faster than with our Ventrac, which both have a 72 inch deck. With more horsepower, the pto doesn’t slow down at full speed, and if it does, it will still be more powerful than the Ventrac.

And here is part two of my first comment because i thought of more things to say lol. I might go as far as saying it is probably my favorite tool to use on my Tractor!? I enjoy mowing and the fact that it is so quiet really helps. My mower has dog bones on the front which allows it to float and sometimes it moves back and forth too much leaving stripes all over the place which is a bit annoying and the fact that you pointed out about the quick hitch compatability is another strike. But in the end I think there are more positives than negatives! I have since parked my riding mower and now cut my yard with the 1723 and finish mower.

Lookout Christy,.....I think Tim had a small white spy-plane following you around, to make sure you were working!!! (Ha!Ha!) I agree with Christy,.....When I was younger, and mowed 7-10 acres, I liked that a portion of it was just mindless back-and-forth mowing. It gave me time to think about things. I had a John Deere 955 Hydro with a 72 inch mid-mount mower, a quick-attach loader with a 60 inch bucket, a rear ballast box, and a John Deere 666 rear mount 2-stage snowblower.

A rear mount finish mower allows easy access to the blades for sharpening at home. Just lift the mower high, put down a couple of jack stands, lower the mower onto the jack stands, remove the blades, sharpen the blades in a vice using a mill file, reinstall the blades. A sharp cutting blade will allow the tractor to work easier and produce a crisp green lawn. Sharpening the three blades can be done is less than 10 minutes. Give it a try. It will save mowing time. I used a pneumatic 1/2 inch wrench to remove the bolts.

Advantage of the rear finish mower is you can back it in under trees and shrubs to mow areas that you would otherwise have to mow with a push mower or weed wacker. You can also typically use a much wider finish mower compared to the width of MMM available on most tractors. I also prefer the rear discharge feature available on most finish mowers. And as you mentioned, rear finish mowers are tractor independent. Inch for inch they are usually less expensive. About the only disadvantage is maneuverability if you have a lot of obstacles.

You should demo and time yourself switching from this mower to the backhoe then back to the mower. I had to do this today and the change-over took longer than the actual digging project. One advantage I've found for a RFM is I can now mow the very top and bottom of my steep banks and only have to weed-eat the center portion.

I love a 3 point rear mower. Ours is side discharge and wish we had a rear but regardless, you don’t wear the debris. I like being able to get under trees by backing into them rather than taking the whole tractor under. Just yesterday I was cutting some tall grass and lifted the deck a foot for a pre-pass then a final pass in case there were rocks in there. We also have a steep bank along a lake where the grass grows tall. I can back out over it suspending the mower over the cliff cutting the tall grass. Our riding mower can’t ever cut as well along that shoreline.

When I worked for the seed farm we had that style finish mower on a 90hp 2wd 2950 Deere with an SG2 cab. it was surprising even on a big tractor like that where you could cut as long at the trees were well trimmed back round the lawns and yard. The only problem was his kids couldn't cut the grass so after I quit they went big zero turn, that created another problem though he couldn't stop them fighting over who cut the grass L.O.L. If Christie is having problems she needs some technology, like rear camera and GPS guidance just like we have on farm machinery.,Then update it to auto steer as well . She could sit and read a book on the longer runs as long as she don't let it drive in the pond/lake like some guys have done with farm machinery in fields, or cross the road while not paying attention/falling asleep with some of the older systems ! Thanks for the video take care guys.

Tim the lift links on the deck are so it can be adjusted for clearance on different tractors. On my 45 hp kioti using an older rhino 6 foot mower my links are still not long enough to prevent the front tires from contacting my rear tires on my tractor if I raise too high and they pivot forward. I also have to turn my drawbar around to were it is under the tractor because the front roller will catch on the drawbar.

Great mower. I would like it for large areas only and use string trimmers around trees and bushes. Additionally, after having and managing acreage for a few years now, I think that it is ideal to have a couple of mowers for specific tasks. In my case, the tractor for large open areas and either a lawn tractor or zero turn, “preferably“ for smaller parts of your lawn in tight spaces. I use my tractor for many tasks and as convenient as it is to have an auto deck it’s still one more step when mowing the lawn. The auto deck is without a game changer if you have limited funds and need a, “Swiss Army knife tractor”, but if you’re fortunate enough to have the cash then I would strongly recommend having a dedicated mower that can handle the small areas and possibly larger areas if your tractor is set up for another job.

I would really enjoy to work a project with you guys. You inspired me to purchase my own little loader tractor. I went with the Massey Ferguson. I have found it very useful in my daily tree service and feeding logs to my saw Mill. If you ever get into Michigan feel free to look us up. I'm sure I could fill a couple of days with work

The adjustment on the links for the lower arms are for tractors with larger rear wheels. The gauge wheels in reverse can swivel around and contact the rear tractor wheels. You can extend those lower arms to set the mower out farther away for clearance. Then as you found the 2nd pin is to enable/disable float. Normally you want floating but with the 2nd pin in you can lift it flat, otherwise it will droop at a steep angle. I prefer the rear mount over the mid mount because I can get it in to more places. I guess I've been using one long enough now that it's 2nd nature on turns and maneuvering. When I moved to my current property where I have a lot of individual trees that need mowing around I just leave the ring of long grass around them and come back around with a narrow deck (48") zero turn (though I'd honestly rather have a regular lawn/garden tractor than a zero turn. Zero turns are awful on slopes). I would agree though if I were limited to a single mower attached to a tractor, it would be a mid mount. When allowing for two mowers, the rear mount gives me the most versatility.

I've been learning to use a very old Woods RM306 the past couple of weeks. Older one with only 2 ground wheels. My personal observations : It's 1.5' wider than my MMM The MMM is veeeery limited in lift height, the 3pt definitely isn't. Used it to knock the pasture down to 8" or so easily. No need to remember the RIO whenever backing up. Very easy to back it up over the pond edge to knock that down. No grass in my leg hair. No option for anything more than 60" mid mount. MMM is muuuch more intuitive to use. Rear mount leaves distinct tire tracks, at least in my model. 6' is much more likely to scalp over really bumpy stuff. I found that the pucker factor on my ditch bank was greatly increased. I don't have a weight bracket on the front, so I leave the loader on and remove the bucket or forks to mow, means I'm even longer than just the rear mount is already. Just some observations from this particular newbie.

Some of the Kubota mid-mount mowers are intended to ride on the gauge wheels similar to three point mounted finish mowers (B50 and LX series decks come to mind). However, as you mentioned, most lawn/garden tractors, sub-compact tractors and smaller compact tractors have a height adjustment for the deck where the gauge wheels should be set to a certain height above the ground. I personally prefer mid-mount mower decks but I understand that there are benefits to the three point mounted rear finish mower decks as well.

For the over lapping issue you could bolt or clamp on the front or even the side of the tractor. I would use a bar or angle iron with something hanging down to the ground. It may make it easier. I have thought of this because the tractor I was thinking of didn't have mid mount mower at the time.

We actually opted to get a rear finish mower instead of a mid mount when we got our b2650. It's soooo much easier to remove and service than a mid mount.

Tim the moveable bottom 3 point mounts are so you can have it on a bigger tractor like a 3 series with or without a quick hitch so the deck isn't by the rear tires

Added a 12v fan to my canopy; it makes being outside in the heat much nicer. It’s a Maradyne unit sold for mounting in big rig cabs and attaches to the ceiling (or canopy in my case).

I added a fan to the John Deere canopy on both my 3025e and my 5300. I used a electric radiator fan purchased off EBay for $40. Puts out 3000 com blowing down on your head, and helps keep the dust blown down and away. Bugs too.

Rear discharge 3 pt. finish mower for the win, unless all you're mowing is open pasture with zero obstacles. The maneuverability of a rear mount or front mount mower will always trump a mid mount mower.

I've been trying to mow with my 6600 Ford and Rhino TM 84. The Ford doesn't want to cooperate so I've been having to use my 61" Bad Boy Outlaw XP. I started mowing around the trees with the Bad Boy and then finishing with the TM 84.That works good when the tractor cooperates and wants to start.

I am employed at a golf course, we use reel mowers and large multi deck rotary mowers. The 7 deck Toro has 3 decks up front, these cut before the tires flatten the grass so we get a great cut with minimal tire tracks. We also have a zero turn Walker mower, and for my preference it's the nicest cut. Personally I have a small kubota with the same 60'' finishing mower made in Italy, I did start with one made in china but found the quality a little lacking! Price was great though . Having said all that I feel qualified to comment on grass cutting. I really like the cut with either finishing mowers, I also overlap the cut hoping to recut the tire marks. Observation... beware of a too close a cut around trees, as an arborist I cringe when I see the bark being damaged, use your chips from the chipper to create mulched circles. Notice too that the mower moves from side to side on the jockey wheels as they swivel, look out trees!

Have cut with a 5 foot Phoenix finish mower fur 3 years. You get so used to swinging and turning around objects that it becomes second nature. I like the cut and quietness. I can unhook and hook back up in about 2 minutes.

Tim I've had one for four years I wouldn't have it any other way. I love mine. I mow 5 acres and I have a six foot. It's the way to go for me. I have Pat's quick hitch and it works fine. You might want to have a segment on a Pat's quick hitch.

with our mid mount mower, we felt like we were taking a constant shower in bits of grass and leaves. Also, the mid mount mower was not safe to mow along the edge of ditches, etc due to the risk of sliding into the ditch/creek/etc

Had a couple midmount mowers and between the bent wheels on street curbs and the grass blowing back from the side discharge I went with the rear discharge 3 pt mowers like your Rhino. That was a fun video and very informative. Keep the camera (person) and look forward to a brush cutter vid or some dirt tools. Thanks
