New microwave is 1” wider than the old one so I need to take .5” off the inside edge of the side pieces of the old trim kit and I had no idea how I was going to make a 13” straight cut that didn’t look like garbage. Works on aluminum because Al is not ductile; it is brittle. Microfractures form at weak points from stress instead of the metal bending below its yield point (like steel). Once the fractures form, their growth would be exponential with each application of stress until suddenly the metal is loose and then breaks. It's why aluminum mountain bikes require shocks to prevent sudden frame collapse, which is a phenomenon of aluminum bike frames (road and bike). Steel framed bikes last forever; aluminum frame bikes are designed obsolescence.

For this one I use Metal G Clamps to hold the ruler in place.

make sure you wear gloves next time, since the knife slipping or sharp aluminium edge can easily cut your hand open, also cut away from yourself so that if the knife slips it doesn't stab you. I am guilty not cutting away from myself too, but it is dangerous.

Thank you so much for this tip.. My BusBoard Solderless breadboards all come with a thin alu backplate except the BB1460. Fun thing about that breadboard is that you can separate the 2 middle pieces and the two power rails. So i was thinking perhaps i could buy sum 0.15mm thin alu sheet and make sum myself..

That's a nice trick, but it destroys your marking tools and is dangerous and prone to error. AN improvement would be to design a jig to hold the blade and your workpiece securely and improve the reliability and quality of the cut while extending the life of the blade and your marking tools.
