Using dowels for the wa style (Japanese) handle construction works great. I have a video on that process here: • How to fit a Wa Handle...
I've never found a really good way to get the slots in the dowels but this new idea I came up with works pretty good.
You can get a slot cutter here: amzn.to/2ZaVxAs
The arbor here: amzn.to/3ehc0Hs
And a cross slide vice here: amzn.to/38GRkHL
These are all amazon affiliate links.

About Simple Little Life:
This channel has sort of turned (inadvertently) into a knife making channel. But the original idea behind what we wanted it to be is this description below:
Videos on our journey to homesteading. With a recent purchase of a little piece of the Alberta prairie, we're looking to sell our nice suburban home in search of a more meaningful life beyond chasing the "American dream" working for some big company and making someone else rich. It's not about the money, it's about getting the most value from the work I do to improving the life of my family.
Some preparedness, DIY, building quality things with your hands, guns, gear, and outdoor exploration.

It might not have been obvious in the video but the mill was running in reverse and the cutter was pushing into the jig. The chatter is caused by the end of the dowel being so far away from the clamp 👍

If you leave the dowels at double length, you can clamp them on both sides. Cut in half afterwards. You will have to plunge in with the mill though.

I think I'll try a version of this to use in conjunction with my table saw crosscut sled. I've got a blade with a fairly thin kerf, so we'll hope it works. This is a pain-in-the-neck step, so I hope I can adapt this idea. Thanks for the great content!

I bought a scalloped J-flex belt the other day just to try it out (only bought one) and I did something similar to what you did at the end. The belt lasted approximately 30 seconds before I bound it up and ripped it in half. Amazing how fast you can destroy things with a nice belt grinder. :) Thanks for the video and leaving in your mistakes. We can all learn from them.

That's pretty much what I was going to suggest for you to do at the beginning of the video, but figured I'd watch it first LOL. I have a big bridgeport mill and those milling cutters are awesome for a lot of things. You can get them in a variety of thickness and with or without carbide. Actually a carbide tipped cutting going a little slower may stop your chattering. Many prayers and happy blade making

Thanks for sharing. How about taking a 2x4 to a tablesaw. Drill 1/2" holes down the center, then cut a kerf as high as you need down the center. Insert your dowels and you can cut several in a single or two passes.

Hey mate, I do wa style handles all the time. I do similar to how you first explained it and I never have any problems. Try clamp up a oversized piece and don’t mill past the end of your vice jaws. In fact keep it in a good half inch or so. Then after just cut one end off right at the end of your slot. If you need a wider slot just take it wider before you go the full depth, then do your final pass.

This is legit sir! I need to do another one of these handles... Do you think you'd get less chatter if you flipped your assembly so that the sled is towards your body? (or if you could run you mill in reverse) The only kitchen knife I've made thus far was based on your build along. Really appreciate you putting out that design!
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks 👍. I am running the mill in reverse so it’s pushing into the board but still get a little chatter. Most stocks only chatter for an 1/8” of an inch or so but the last one that I decided to film was terrible.

If your mill can change direction of rotation of the spindle, the sawblade should push the dowel back in against the fence instead of trying to lift it. This should remove most of the shattering :) If you cant change direction, just move the vise on the other side of the spindle and flip the jig 180 :) Cheers!
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it is actually running in reverse pushing into the jig. The chatter is simply because the clamp is so far away. Oh well. Cheers 👍

What if you add a strip of office style double sided tape under the cut side? It is pretty tacky but comes off easily....

Could you mount it from the other side so the blade pushes it towards the jig instead of trying to lift it away?
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife 4 жыл бұрын
I had the mill running in reverse so it was pushing into the jig. The chatter is just from the clamp being so far away from the end of the work piece.

Would some wax on the sides of the saw blade reduce the noise?
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife 4 жыл бұрын
That would be interesting to try. I think the chatter is mostly caused by it the fact that it’s unsupported for so long away from the clamp.

That's cool. I tried that too. I found it not very accurate and not repeatable. Then again, I didn't bother making any type of jigs for it. When I've got 10 or 15 knives to handle, I want to make sure that this step is consistent and accurate so I can ensure a smooth process and get great results over and over again. I was sick and tired of having to adjust for each dowel being a little different than the others.
