If you haven't done so visit Cutty Sark in Greenwich, London, you can go under the hull and see the incredible copper plating.

Here again, as mentioned in the last video, I do feel little cushions .... two or three photographers bean bags .... under the hull and the ship will therefore be stable to work on to place the copper plates. This, in my humble opinion and observation, would certainly simplify the task at hand. Stunning work as usual. What a pleasure it is to watch.

@@JohnsWoodenShips , I hope so too, John. Going to Britain was something I had wanted to do all my life. Saw Warrior, Victory, Belfast, and Cutty Sark all in one week.

@@colinmontgomery1956glad you enjoyed your visit to the UK. I’m only 30 mins away from the Cutty Sark. Probably biased but us Brits do think the Victory is the greatest ship ever and the Royal Navy still have listed as a vessel.

@@philsreef746 , thank you, kindly. She is certainly the greatest warship. On my return to the United States (I am originally from Pennsylvania), I stopped to see our own U.S.S. Constitution, also an active member of our United States Navy, though slightly younger than Victory.

Nice work John, like yourself I don't like the copper tape , when I copper plated the Belem, I made my own plates from copper sheeting, creating the simulated nail heads using a press I made (very time consuming), I did overlap mine, but based on the ships plans and photos despite comments below, this is visible on the ship, and the nail heads can clearly be seen protruding slightly, at the end of the day its your model, your the one who sees it, who cares what other people think 😀

Thank you very much!!! I agree with the tape, it seems like it is fake. Copper plates are the real thing! I agree that everyone is free to make it the way he wants!

You are right about being free to do it as you please. I simply believe in keeping to scale as much as possible. Looks fab John. Love the base paint first and then placing copper on after. You can see she’s going to look fab already and as you say you’ve only completed a few rows. Would it be possible to advise on the brand of copper plates used as they look exquisitely detailed……👌 I agree totally about your comments re the use of adhesive copper tape it soooooo easily gets marked and tends to show the slightest blemish. Hi Dirk! Yes you can do that, they have a small perimeter that is flat. But this will be a lot harder and you will have no pattern when you reach small curves that you have to do it like that.

They are 18,5mm length and 5 mm wide

Hi Ray, no they are extra , you can order them in any Billing Boats distributor.

The size is 16mm X 5mm and they fit for a scale 1:75. No they don't come in various sizes.

FYI the copper plates are nailed on and they are dimpled into the copper. On a real ship anything protruding from the hull is a magnet for sea growth and you would have ropes of algae trailing behind you in no time. And at this scale you would not be able to see the dimples yet alone the nail heads. I get it though you use what the kit provides. But, sometimes you need to try to improve on what the kit gives you.

The copper plates are great, in that size it would be impossible to do what you describe, also the nailing will destroy not only the copper plates but also the hull. You need a big scale to do that, at least 2 times bigger than this.

I am not suggesting you actually nail the plates to the hull. Simply that there are other ways to simulate copper plate on models. There is no need to even use a ponce wheel to imitate the nail dimples as you cannot see them in scales smaller than 1/48th.
