CV-6 SBD-3 Dauntless

This is the fifteenth installment of my build of the CV-6. In this video I am building the second part of the air group, the dive bombers, SBD-3 Dauntless. I am building them based on the KA-models 1/200 WWII US Deck Plane Set II.
The build is based on the Trumpeter 03712 kit with detail up sets from Pontos and KA-models; trying to use the best of both sets.

Fabulous job! They look as detailed as a 1/72 plane. Had to believe you’re looking at a 1/200 scale plane.

Great work. Thank you for continuing to share. It's inspiring. Especially like the faded paint look. I built one of these some months ago, before the pontos or KA kits were out, as an experiment. I scratch built the cockpit area. The aftermarket cockpits are a bit better than the one I built (I have since received them and will use on my build), however the one thing I don't love is the antenna wire. The PE version looks out of scale to me. I was able to use hairs from an anti-static brush to make those wires look a bit more size-appropriate.

Thanks John, glad you found it inspiring 😊 I definitely agree about the wires and I contemplated cutting off the PE and replace it with Uschi van der Rosten rigging lines. At the end, when making so many planes you have to think what’s good enough, and what will be noticed.

The planes are Trumpeter, but the detail up set for the planes are KA and not a part of the CV-6 set but an extra. I can definitely recommend it.

Hi Kenneth sorry to bother you but can you please tell me where you purchased your scribing tool and tape from as I have purchased the tamiya tool but it doesn't form a V Grove as yours does. Keep up the excellent work regards dave

another question, i noticed you paint booth is with water? can you provide a link to check it out?

What paint did you use to the top surface of the dauntless?

I used Blue Gray from Scale Colors, as shown in the Wildcats installment.

I’m finishing my Dauntless 1/200 now. How do you cut the canopes without very small bits flying everywhere ? 10:25

I guess you are referring to how to cut the resin support tags. That is difficult, and you need to use very sharp cutters and cut them with regards to where you get stress or tension in the resin. Otherwise parts will snap off. You can also use a hot knife.

@@NorwegianModellingBench Thanks. Was thinking of covering the canopes/windows bits with masking tape and then cut it to prevent parts flying all over the place. But might skip it if it really doesn’t work out.

@@minispace1 You can try of course, it will prevent the parts from flying off, but they will still break I guess. Best of luck 🤞
