On MR2 turbo axles, we use the axle as a slide hammer to get it out/in. Very stout joints and positively retained in the inboard joint. On MR2 N/A axles, we use a pry bar as a punch on the special tabs on the inboard joint and smack it with a 3lb. sledge to get it out and slide hammer it to get it in. Different joint construction means different processes. And I just had my brother's '04 STI front passenger axle out and back in yesterday. Man those are easy with the roll pin.

I take out the lower control arm fasteners out and don't touch the bolts that hold the strut to the knuckle so I don't have to worry about setting the camber. On the older models that had a bolt to connect the sway bar end link to the control arm i would take that out and the lower ball joint nut and take the axles out that way.

I replaced a CV axle on my 2014 Crosstrek last month and I neglected to grease the end of the shaft. It was lightly greased already from the manufacturer... Do I need to take it apart and re-grease it or what?
@SeanBZA
@SeanBZA 6 жыл бұрын
No, it runs in an oil bath anyway in the final drive. The grease is there just to hold the clip in during assembly and make it a lot easier to get the unit into the drive, plus gives just a little extra lube on the shaft seal during assembly so it has a lower chance of tearing. If it had some grease it was fine. Next time remember just a small amount of grease, basically a thin film all over the metal shaft and splines, especially on any steps and where the seals will run, and a little more by the clip so it does not drop down loosely when you turn it, just moves slowly down.

I’m going to be changing out the axle on a Nissan maximum but I found your video helpful. One question I have is in regards to the clip that goes on the end of the axle to then be inserted into the transaxle. I’m confused as to the function of the grease. You mentioned that is meant to hold the clip in place but isn’t the clip held on the end of the axle in the recessed groove of the axle? Also is the opened end of the clip supposed to be on the top side or the bottom side of the axle?
@briansmobile1
@briansmobile1 Жыл бұрын
The open part doesn't matter. Grease is thick, sticky & viscous. That's how it holds the clip centered on the shaft. It doesn't dangle low at the bottom and it shouldn't stick up at the top.

@briansmobile1
@briansmobile1 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Lee. Obviously I've never done that exact thing, but where I would start is to download the wire diagram from the year, make and model of the donor car the seat came from and send power, and ground to the wires you need for power and terminate all the memory and position BCM stuff. Just set it up to motor off the switches.

I recently bought a pair of Mechanix cold weather work gloves and found that the fit makes a big difference. I can squeeze into a large pair but I have to work at it, that pair is toasty warm. The same glove in an XL might as well be non insulated for as cold as my hands get while wearing them.

Is it better to replace the ripped rubber boot/repack with grease than replace the whole unit? I bought a NAPA brand unit, but I'm a little torn between the 2 jobs. Thanks, Mark
@jryoung5460
@jryoung5460 2 жыл бұрын
Replace. You can't be sure there won't be internal damage to the joint and for the price difference it doesn't make sense to repack and reboot. 20-40$ vs 90-120 for new. If money is tight it's worth a shot but the best way is new axles. It's also worth just doing both sides. My left rear was clapped but I did both and when we pulled my right rear it was way looser despite not making noise. Probably would've failed shortly after.

I suspect my inner joint might be bad and have too much excess play. I know some in and out movement is normal at the joints but is there supposed to be radial or rotational play at the inner joint? If I hold my hand over the inner cup which in the video is green I can feel what I think are the bearings rotating inside the cup. The duct boots are not ripped and the car has really low miles. I suspect the axle was just defective from the factory. I don't think it's normal but just confirming before pulling the axle.

@ozzstars_cars

I have used rebuilt axles from Advance on more than one Subaru and never had any vibration issues. That's my experience. If a car is worth $2-4K I can't see throwing big money on new OEM axles. Most times replacing the cracked CV boots early are the key to saving the oem. BTW, i am subbed to your channel and appreciate what you do. -Glen
@briansmobile1
@briansmobile1 6 жыл бұрын
Great question- some rebuilt axles had/have problems. I've talked about this in prior videos. The inboard joint is female on older models. The metal was softer and some rebuilders only replaced the outer joint/boot and didn't do anything about wear to the inboard joint spline wear. If you find a Subaru with the old design CV axles that develops a vibration at highway speeds after receiving a remanufactured axle- check it for play between the transmission output shaft and the female inboard socket of the reman axle.

This is not correct. If you take the steering knuckle off from the bottom via the pinch bolt on the lower ball joint, it's a 15 minute job and does not require any alignment because you are not touching the camber bolts or tie rod. Consult the Subaru technical service manual.
