Thank you, I was able to replace both front cv axles on my 300K mile USDM 08 legacy GT spec B in about 4 hours start to finish. I expect I would have messed up my camber without your tech tip to mark that bolt, very smart! Torque specs and written descriptions were extremely useful. Great work!

Great video, great tips... Thank you. I also bought aftermarket axles and they appeared to be too short... Until I stretched the news ones out. The inner boot held them short... I was able to remove the old ones by "slide hammering" them out, they have enough play to do so. Once again, thank you for the effort you put in to make this video. And, yes... My vibration under acceleration is gone :)

Thanks for posting, I enjoy your videos that you put out. If i may help and give a little advice and save your back and less work. The next time that you do another cv axle, this is my tip. Remove tire, cv nut, sway bar link bolt, ball joint nut. Then just push the lower control arm down and pull hub assembly to you, cv pops out, then remove from tranny. It's a really fast way of doing it, and you don't have to deal with the brakes or strut alignment. 3 nuts and its out after the tire is off. Hope this helps for the next time.

Best Subie DIY on YT! Like your style of no rambling monologue, just straightforward info. Looking at purchasing a low mileage 92 SVX. Do these share mechanical components of other Subie’s? I’m concerned about parts availability. Any advice on problems to look for on these?Thanks Mr. Subaru, keep up the good work.
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 6 жыл бұрын
+Keith S. Anderson the transmission is the SVXs Achilles' hell. The SVX doesn't share a lot of crossover with other Subaru models. Parts are starting to get kind of few and far between. Windshields, throttle position sensors, and radiators are hard to come by. Still great cars, just have to be aware that you can't just run to the parts store or through dealership for a lot of items when you have car trouble.

thanks for the video. I will replacing the right axle on my 09 Forester Friday. I did the brakes Monday night, and saw speckle of CV grease on the knuckle. The outer boot looks good but must have cracks that open when steering , throwing grease. Any tips to make sure the trans-axle seal is not damaged when removing the old or installing the old? Should you apply a thin film of grease to the stub shaft before installing into the transaxle? I replaced the knuckle, bearing hub, and balljoints 3 months ago, so it should all come apart easily. Im thinking take as much apart as possible is good to make sure the axle goes out and in straight and not cocked is best.

Nice video. I usually torque the axle nut after the wheel is back on the ground. That way your working against the tire instead of the transmission.
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 3 жыл бұрын
That's not proper procedure from Subaru. The CV axle nut sets the preload on the wheel bearing. Vehicle weight on the wheel bearing, with the axle nut not properly torqued, can damage the bearing.

Another good video. My 08 went through 2 sets of axles under warranty. The boots failed. I think the boot is too close to the catalytic converter and the boots get too hot. The last set was replaced at 90K and they're still fine at 172K. Maybe Subaru changed to a stronger boot. Where do you place the jack stands? I jack the Outback by the lower control arm to body bolt. I like to avoid jack stands on the jack points on the sill, I find you can deform the sheet metal. Do you replace the transmission seal when you do the axles?
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 6 жыл бұрын
+joepinehill I've found that aftermarket axle boots don't hold up near as well as the oem ones. I jack the car front and rear under the rear differential and front crossmember. I place jackstands on the factory pitch weld at the marked jack locations. You usually only get deformation of the pinch welds if you don't have the jack stands positioned incorrectly or it the car is rusted. I usually only replace axle seals if they're leaking. Rarely do I see them fail. Usually when they do, it's from being damaged by axle removal/installation.

At what stage do you recommend to replace them? Like how much oil leakage etc. And is it worth to replace parts on the Axle, or do a full replacement?
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 6 жыл бұрын
Usually cheaper and easier to replace the whole assembly. If you catch it early, say just a torn boot, you could replace the boot. If you have noise, lots of grease slung out of the joint, or dirt/contamination in the joint, I'd advise replacement.

I just replaced my 2007 Legacy front struts and watched an incomplete instruction video which didn't tell me that the upper camber bolt needed to be put back in the same way it came out. Not sure how I can fix this. What kind of problems might this cause if I didn't get the bolts back in the same way? Do I need to take it to a shop and have them check the bolts, or is there a certain way that is specified to know how they are suppose to go back in to be properly installed? Thanks much.

Do you know if these axles share part numbers across the board for the na/turbo models? I’m about to replace both fronts on my 05 leg gt 5spd manual. Autozone has 3 or 4 different numbers. They also show 25/25 and 25/27 splines on these. Any suggestions? I think mine uses 25 trans splines and 27 hub? Thanks

I can't say for sure. I do know that I pulled a front axle from a 2005 LGT auto sedan and put it in a 2005 Legacy 2.5i Limited with a 5 speed manual without issue. Axles were identical.

MrSubaru1387..,roger that, I know from my wrx days between the 02-05s, they had a bunch of crazy differences with the male and female inner stubs up front and I think even different splines on the 5x114 sti hubs. Seems like the legacy’s were a bit more standardized.

Hey man, got a question. Pulled my diff and seals look like ass and want to replace them. Was looking for one of your vids to check it out. It's a r160 Sti diff and need to change out the dust seals for the axels. Advice or a vid you've done for that? I ordered factory Subaru seals and they should be here mid week.

No video on the rear diff side seal yet. They pull out and press in pretty straight forward with the axles removed. Similar to this transmission output shaft seal - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ppiGlq5jzdWwlWw.html. Here's a link to a FSM - jdmfsm.info/Auto/Japan/Subaru/Impreza/2005/2005%20Service%20Manual%20EU.pdf. Open in Adobe. Hit the bookmarks tab, select chassis section, differentials, rear differential side oil seal, replacement. Hope this helps.

Please don't be upset by my questions. I have an Automatic 2008 Subaru Impreza 2.5i hatchback, and would like to know if this video would be the same for me to replace both front wheel CV's? I looked through the comments and saw people mention generations, but I am not familiar enough to know. This is my 1st Subaru. If this video is not like my car, do you have a video for it? Thank you for the video and time reading my question.

Why not just pop the ball joint apart instead of messing with the camber bolt?

Because that is the factory procedure. You need to remove the strut bolts to get enough articulation out of the spindle to remove the axle from the hub.

Hey Mr Subaru, I recently replaced the CV axle with a new one because it started making a knocking noise that were noticeable when making tight turns at low speeds . The new one has started doing this too. Do you think it's a defective axle or could it be something else like the wheel hub? The car is a 2010 WRX. Love the videos by the way!

@@MrSubaru1387 I have not looked at it closely but I will inspect it tomorrow. I mostly feel the knocking on the passenger side side but do you think it could possibly be the driver side axle? They said the oem axles cost around 400 so I wanted to save a couple bucks before getting oem
