Your speculation may be true. I have a Seiko daydate. It didn't have a piece of lint on the dial for the first few years. Then I noticed one. It made its way on the dial from some other location. No biggie. I removed it during a battery change.

I had an automatic version but sold it and went with the quartz. The automatic version didn’t keep time well. But I didn’t have the dust issue. Or perhaps the tritium is flaking?

I’m assuming this was a one off problem, but it’s definitely not tritium. Multicolored fibers and even a few hairs. Tritum flaking is messy, but uniform in color. Thankfully I was able to take it apart and blow it all out. It’s much nicer to wear with a uniformly black dial 😁.
