@@kevbrown1867 Greece won't attack Russia and unless this is the case there can only be a NATO vs. Russia-scenario. Russia would be silly to do that against Greece with all the assets that are roughly in the area, cause of the Middle East crisis. Also, Putin wants to attack the Baltics after Ukraine anyway, and it seems like the US are still failing in keeping their commitments this seems like a possibility, it's really time for Greece to upgrade to something new.

Note on the Hellenic Air Force F-4s: they were upgraded by Germany in the 1990s with the F/A-18 Hornet’s radar, modern GPS+ radios & AIM-120 capability.

Upgrade Programms "Peace Icarus I & II". The objective was to apply a Structure Life Extension Program (SLEP) to the 72 F-4E/RF-4E that remained in service and to upgrade combat capabilities, Avionics Upgrade Program (AUP) for 39 F-4s (29 Peace Icarus I aircraft and 10 Peace Icarus II). In December 1998, the contract was signed between the German Aerospace Industry (DASA) and the Hellenic Aerospace Industry (HAI). The electronics upgrade included the installation of the modern Radar AN/APG-65 GR, new mission computer, HUD, multifunctional color screens, GPS/INS, IFF Interrogator, V/UHF radios, Radar altimeter, image-video recorder etc. These changes allowed for the ability to carry AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles as well as other advanced air/ground weapons. The total cost of the program was $315 million, and upon completion the upgraded aircraft were designated the F-4E Peace Icarus 2000 (PI2000). The original upgraded F-4E flew on April 28, 1999

Yeah, it's very confusing that LockMart chose to call the AESA F-16's "Viper." It was the community nickname decades before, and it just results in mixed communication. (I still don't even know if new-build Block 70's are offically "Vipers" or just the older models upgraded to F-16V standard. It's a mess.)

Major F4 upgrade and the F4 can carry a ton of bombs along with everything else. It also has a great back seated to run this modern radar and tech systems. Don't ever dismiss that extra capability.

The drogue chutes are for landing at small runways, which are often found on Greek islands. Norway's vipers also come with drogue chutes for the same reason, I believe (not for landing on Greek islands but on their own small runways). The problem with giving F-16s or Mirage 2000s is that it would create a gap in numbers in the Hellenic Air Force, so it's not a popular idea. F-35s won't start arriving until around 2030, and even so Greece will be at a considerable numerical disadvantage compared to our eastern 'ally'. Block 30s are perfect for intercepting Turkish incursions into Greek airspace without wearing out the more capable fighters (plus they're better at mock dogfights). Right now Greece has a small qualitative advantage with its 18 Rafales (24 by the end of this year), but the Turkish Air Force will be getting lots of F-16Vs and who knows how capable Kaan will be? The F-4s are ready to be handed over right away if Ukraine wants them, but it doesn't seem worth the effort on their part.

Polish Airforce F-16's, block 52s I think, also use drogue chutes. As one of the pilots officialy said it is for wet runways, winter, difficult weather generally, etc.

So the Greek are still arming against the Turks…although they are “allies of NatO”…just like the old days…so basically the Nato cooperation is kind of a useless facade in that region…??

@@electricaviationchannelvid7863 Being in NATO may have averted some wars at the last minute, but there's no guarantee that this will keep being the case in the future. Unless a common enemy suddenly pops up (Russia isn't it, because Turkey is cooperating with it) there will only be temporary lulls in the level of threat. If anything, it will almost certainly get worse, as Turkey experiences demographic, industrial, and technological growth with concurrent internal calls for forging its own path (unencumbered by Western political constraints) as a regional great power with territorial expansion in mind. Disregarding those tendencies, or relying on NATO support (which may be at the whim of US politics, as the Ukrainian experience has recently demonstrated), carries too great a risk.

@@Hypernefelos Well, NatO announced the idea of UA expansion in 2008…the Russ.Fed. has objected…2014 coup happened and Nato stuffed all western weapons into UA (tens of thousands of Javelins,Stingers) the UA bombing on ethnic groups started and Russia responded…and now here we are closer to a tactical nuke usage than ever since Hiroshima….are we more secure? Was it worth it? NatO is more fragmented than before…the Turks dislike Sweden, the Greek hate the Turks, the Norwegians and others profit from blowing Nord Stream 2…the EU economy is in decline…Civil wars are lingering in Paris and London by ethnic tensions…

@@electricaviationchannelvid7863 both sides are arming and the bad thing with Turkey is that the system is not rock solid, few years back some army guys were preparing a coup to overthrow the Turkish government......So even though both countries are in NATO it wouldn't be far fetched for Turkey to do something foolish.

Seeing the last news about the front...i feel like Ukraine don't need planes but need tons of air defense and artillery. I don't see how the f-16 will do anything when the battlefield if full of anti-air, s-300/400...To me this will move ressources away from where the war really need them.

you're right... even the Russians can't use their jets because of Ukrainian air defense. Mover & Gonky said the space is too small for dogfights... So the whole thing with the F-16 is just a mix-up. I guess.

F16s can also be used for SEAD/DEAD [Suppression/Destruction of Enemy Air Defenses ] missions so having full of anti-air s3/400s = full of targets.

Well, planes is also a kind of air defence. Plus, right now there is a big problem with a all kind of bombs from close air support. F-16 can definitely help with these issues.

If the Greek F-16s go to Ukraine, that will make almost 100 Vipers. Then if they give their Mirage 2000s, this could coincide with France offering some of theirs to make around 50 Mirages in Ukraine. Ukraines problem isn’t going to be aircraft numbers, it’s going to be finding enough NATO converted pilots and ground crew and having enough airfields suitably equipped and protected against Russian strikes. 150 Western jets will make a huge difference to them if they can pull it off. It’s gonna make Su34 and Su25 pilots sweat, unless they have a reliable escort of Su35s.

The Russian fighters do not leave the air defense umbrella…which extends into hundreds of kilometers into UA at medium-high altitude…so the F16,Mirage can fly low level missions only which puts their AA missiles at a reduced WEZ…. The other mission they could fly is a stand off launch platform…not leaving the west side of the country…again not really effective profile anymore…

So back in the day, an airline called Wien Air Alaska, among others, used to fly Boeing 737-200's (very low slung engines) into dirt runways equipped with what was called a "gravel kit" which included a probe protruding from under the inlet blasting bleed air out to break up the vortex sucking rocks/debris into the engine. Has the USAF or anyone else ever researched doing this with the Viper/Falcon to enable it to fly from unimproved airstrips?

I can’t find any indications that USAF (or perhaps US Navy) F-16s have ever been equipped with drag chutes. US doctrine has always been to use regular runways, especially since the low intake Hoovers up everything. I found that some guest military F-16s have employed drag chutes at US military airfields. The F-16XL delta wing prototype was apparently outfitted with drag chutes and a 2000 ft recommended runway length when employing the chute.

I wouldn't think so, the vipers' intake is well before the nose wheel, so there can't be any FOD thrown up by that into the intake.

Dude, half of Europe has bought F-35s. Dutch and Italian Fat Amys has been/ are stationed in a Polish airbase where local Fulcrums always use drag chutes while landing so there are no issues.

@Kaalund1989 The F-16 requires a very high quality runway that it meticulously maintained. This is no problem for most European countries. Ukraine's airfields are not high quality, not well maintained, and many are not long enough for F-16s. The problem is not Europe. The problem is Ukraine.

If gripen (an even smaller aircraft) is capable of mounting both missiles F-16 can do the same too. But it would require re-wiring and software changes I reckon, which would cost a considerable amount for a small fleet.

To be fair, last few months ago, a Russian missile strike struck near the area where the Greek Prime Minister was, during his visit in Odessa accompanying Zelensky. It's an understatement to say that the Hellenic Government and people were offended by such a move. Imagine, one of the, if not the most important elected leaders of your state almost got assassinated by a military of another nation whom you aren't currently at war with. Will there not be consequences?

Even if Zelensky was there, why risk launching a high explosive ordinance at a city where he is, knowing a high profile representative from Greece would be arriving? Why shouldn't they (Russians) care? Their international reputation was and is already in flames, so why make the damage even more severe? Think about it.

You have to be highly intelligent and have great fitness to become a fighter pilot in the US military of which you're under contract until usually age 30. If you're at that level, why would you give up money, family, and any life you have to fight another country's war against an enemy that doesn't affect your country's safety when you're past the young and stupid phase of their life.
