Great advice for all future pilots! Being humble is an amazing characteristic to have! To add onto the AFOQT+TBAS, your pilot score will increase based on how many flight hours you have... the more the better.. I took it twice, including the second time after getting my private pilot license and my score went from 44 to 96. Keep up the great videos and thank you for helping others!

Ill be 20 in a few months and have a degree in aviation with a commercial pilot license 250+ hours.. so is this hugely beneficial for me? or not so much? I'm hearing mixed answers on where to turn. I've talked to 2 people who flew in the USAF and said talk to a recruiter. Once I get my degree I'm planning on "applying" for all of this, any info anyone has will help a ton. Thanks!

Great vid, Mover. I'm a schoolhouse instructor in AFSOC, and I made a vid on my other channel about how to be a good student. One of the points I mentioned was quibbling. Where I disagree with you is that I do care about the student's mindset, but there are two ways for the student to convey that. There's the classic, explaining why they were right based on how they were thinking, and you're spot on there. I couldn't care less. If they're arguing the grade based on their incorrect perceptions, it's just gonna piss me off. But if they say, "hey, sir, here's where my head was at when I made that mistake. Tell me where I was wrong," I'm all for that. As an instructor, that gives me insight into their head to figure out how to teach that skill more effectively.
@CWLemoine
@CWLemoine 5 жыл бұрын
Colin Reid I agree. My point was more geared toward those that feel the need to explain themselves and provide an excuse matrix for everything. If an instructor asks “what were you thinking here?” Then by all means, let’s chat. Or even if you have a question, framing it that way is totally valid. “When this happened, I thought this. How can I fix it?” But what I want to impress upon young aviators is that it’s important to own up to your mistakes and not try to provide excuses or argue. Perhaps saying “no one cares what you were thinking” might be a little old school and slightly harsh for someone just starting out. Good point. Thanks!

I really hope I'm not to late but go to college first then join the military. Your career path will bet set as an officer for next 20yrs and if you decide to retired before 20 yrs. You'll have your college degree, plus military experience. However if you go the enlisted route pick any military occupation that rates a top secret clearance you'll have better job opportunities after the military. Whatever you do AVOID open contracts at all cause!!!! PS Recruiters are not your FRIEND they have monthly quotas and they sucker you into a shitty occupation with zero job opportunities in the civilian sector!

Love this video. When I heard about the mindset factor, I immediately related. When I was living in L.A. pursuing my talents as a professional musician. I realized that my mindset was different from the kind of people that are out there and in that type of business. Over time I made more friends in the military than in the music industry. Had the same go getter mindset without being a child about it. Gained their respect cuz I showed tenacity. The more you talk about what it actually the takes the more I want to do this. Your videos are very inspirational. At the end of the day, I just want the chance to fly. IF I don't get the fighter slot that's fine. I'll take what I can get and keep hustling to get that fighter slot as long as it takes and do my very best.

Thank you for your service and all your videos C.W.! I have always self conceptualized myself as a fighter pilot, and will be playing my cards as best I can as I get closer to graduating or for sure after I graduate this December. I've researched it for years, found out about ANG/AFRC slots about 5 years ago, and have been expanding my knowledge about them ever since. I'm already a commercial pilot with 600 hours and extensive work experience, and am about to be an instructor, but know I'll be cutting it close with my age as I turn 28 in December. I also have to battle medical history that no longer applies to me today (I have a normal, unrestricted first class medical) as I know the military looks at it different than the FAA. All I can do is play my cards as best I can I figure.

So, I know this is a long shot, over a year after the video was made.. But anyways: I live in Denmark, where if you have had pilot experience before like with a glider etc., you will have less flying hours in the flight school which the first 5 months of the education is called. Would you still suggest it, because as far as I've read from danish sites, it's not always a good idea, because it's different flying a glider from flying the flying school aircraft T-17 SAAB Supporter. Would you still suggest me to do take a glider license? And what are your takes on a flight simulator? Do you think I could benefit from it? Awesome videos btw, watching every single one of them!

So I know this is a bit of a late comment compared to when this came out, but are there any strict height limitations to being a pilot in general? I’m 6’2 and my ultimate goal is to fly an f35, but I keep seeing mixed answers on height requirements. Sometimes I see that you can’t be more than around 6’1, and other times I read about 6’4 people piloting f16s etc fine. Very helpful video though. Does the same concept basically apply for UK forces? You mentioned before that you got sick during your first experience with aerobatics. How did you overcome this without dramamine? I wouldn't say I'm overly prone to motion sickness but I don't have an iron stomach either. For whatever it's worth, I tossed myself around in a full-motion simulator and fared ok. Is this something that will be assessed during IFT or the start of UPT? I'm not dead set on fighters but I'd hate to strap on a T-6 and find that I have trouble handling yank and bank.
@daytonasixty-eight1354
@daytonasixty-eight1354 5 жыл бұрын
Have you flown a plane before? I suggest you try that for a few hours. I got sick my first few hours in a Cessna 152 and we weren't doing anything crazy. After that you can look for some deals on group-on for aerobatic intro flights to see how you handle that. It's mostly your inner ear that causes problems when flying. When you are new you can feel spatially disoriented because of how you are moving in a 3D axis. Simulators are good, but they don't accurately simulate this feeling as well.
@CWLemoine
@CWLemoine 5 жыл бұрын
It's just something you get used to. It's mostly mental. That's why UPT allows you to get sick the first few rides without much of a penalty. After that, it's called "Manifestation of Apprehension" and grounds for being washed out. I was nervous about it for the first couple of flights, but never got sick. You're way too busy in the cockpit to worry about that once you get going.

I just graduated from high school and am about to sign myself away, I want the quickest and most effective route to the pilot seat of preferably the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor but any fighter would be ideal!! I’ve been told that this is the best plan and have been sticking to this plan, tell me what you think. Join the Air National Guard as a loadmaster on the C-130’s here in Charleston, WV to go ahead and get my necessary flight training out of the way SEAR and water survival. Go to college for anything for four years (my choice would be flight and aviation technology but that’s just a quick choice, any suggestions?) then once I finish my classes and graduate go ahead and put my pilot packet in after that I’m really not sure haha. I’m fresh out of high school so obviously I don’t know much about the processes but anything you could throw at me would help!

You should look into Civil Air Patrol. It’s an auxiliary of the Air Force that you can join when you’re around 13. It’s a fun program and it looks really good for any of the academies or ROTC. As for grades you probably want a 3.5 or higher. The academies all have around a ~10% acceptance rate ( the Air Force Academy has a 12.3% acceptance rate). You should try and play a sport or two and get involved with student government. You may be shy but if it’s your goal then you will need to do it. Good Luck!

@will7966 5 жыл бұрын
Kiloom Bana 4 hours is quite far, and I don’t think it would work. Make sure to double check that that is the closest, and if it is I would say it isn’t worth it. CAP isn’t the end all be all but it’s a good program. If it can’t work then it’s not a huge deal, but all of my other advice such as Student government, grades, sports, volunteering etc still goes. I would also try and do interesting things during your summers. Try and find a cool job or a camp that teaches leadership. Something that sets you apart from the average person. Finally start showing interest in the academy. Visit it if you can, and look into whether you have a local representative (the Naval academy has Blue and Gold officers, no clue about the Air Force). Take as many AP and honors courses as possible, they want to see you challenge yourself. You’ll need to really want it to get in, but if you have the determination, then all of the work you need to do will be easier (not easy just easier).

Got an interview for the airforce (not the US) this week, any tips? What is your best answer to the question: why do you want this job?

Ha! It's not that easy. Only you can answer that. Why do you want the job? What got you to this point?

I have got many reasons, but if you ask me to give 1, I would just say I got a passion. A strong unexplainable feeling I want this. Think I will manage the interview well, but just nervous because we get one chance. ;)

Sir, How many hours did you accumulate as a reserve pilot as opposed to your active duty counter parts?
@CWLemoine

Jack Bell I flew 1000 hrs in the Viper in four years. It was around the same, if not a little more, than my active duty buddies. I don’t know what the current tempo/comparison is though.

C.W. Lemoine they’re still fairly equal. If you happen to deploy you’ll fly more hours than those who don’t in that particular year. In the end they’re similar in terms of hours.

A requirement is to be a natural born citizen of the United States in order to become a commissioned officer. It might be better to become a RAF pilot since RAF do joint exercises with the EU and the US

I don't even care to be a fighter. I just love aviation and then adding on the aspect of helping people both directly and indirectly makes it seem much more rewarding. I feel like a lot of the cocky guys haven't experienced aviation before the military and it's such a wonderful thing. I'm actually about to leave for a flight lesson at one of the first military airports in the country (KMIV) :D

@@jamesadams7600 Hey even of you are 6 5 you may still be able to get a Typhoon slot, but if not you should still be able to get a Tornado since it's a bigger jet. Over here in America I met a B-52 pilot much taller than my, I'm 6 1 and he was dead at 6 5 and had no problems getting a T-38 fighter trainer. Just remember there are waivers for everything, even in the RAF.
