Many if not most of the old timers have a history that is worth telling! At 58 I had a granddad who fought in TWO world wars (He got sunk twice on minesweepers) my other gran had two brothers who were the victims of mustard gas (now that IS an unpleasant substance) and my ex-mother in law worked in a munitions factory in Wales where she was caught in an explosion that caused extensive injuries! I do not think I am unusual in this!

Agreed. These stories are stories of real life and real tragedies, not the saccharine life some would prefer that we all lead. Life cannot be all peaches and cream, that is not reality.

I have had the honour and blessing of having two families become one. We have 3 bio kids, and for the past 10 years we have also had 4 foster kids (siblings). My 2 bio sons were never really into playing with all things mechanical, but our youngest foster son is a car nut. He has high-functioning autism, and is very smart. He has always struggled with both fine and gross motor skills, but he and I have spent about 6 hours so far preparing to pull an engine and gearbox out of a Mk4 Golf. It is the first time he has had anyone show him how to properly use hand tools, and he has loved it. He hates getting dirty, but you can see him putting up with the grime of that old engine because he wants to get it out himself. He's banging knuckles, jamming fingers and whacking his head, but he's loving every second of it. These stories from Cy remind me that it's the little things that matter, time spent with our kids (or other people's kids) training them, listening to them, and encouraging them . Kid's don't care if dad is a neurosurgeon or the garbage guy - what they want is your time, your ear, and your wisdom. And if they get these, they are likely to excel in whatever they put their hand to, and build a better world.

The story about Cy's dad really struck home for me. My dad wasn't a soldier but was born to German refugees in Danzig in 42. To the day he died he wouldn't talk about a lot of things he remembered during and after the war. When I was old enough to deal with any killing that had to happen it was like a weight came off him.

I think this was a fascinating conversation with Cy; especially, being able to watch a video of a young Cy hang-gliding (really drives the point home, no matter how young and healthy we feel today, if we live long enough we will eventually slow down, through the natural aging process). Cy's generation is one of the first we can actually watch through video. I think it would be fascinating to hear the actual voices of my ancestors, who might have lived some 500 years ago, as well as to see them in action as young men and women. I used to encourage my older friends to set down in front of a camera and tell their lives stories - for, maybe countless generations of their descendants to come.

Cy is very eye opening; brain opening. My parents married in 1940, went through WWII, and had me in 1946. They always told me I could do or be anything I wanted if I worked at it. They also supported me in what I did. Dad went very few places without me or Mom and me. If he saw a saw mill he would stop and we went through it. We went through a place in Ft. Smith, AK that was making glass lamp shades because Dad was interested. I tried to raise my two sons the same way but I fear I failed at it.
