Hi. I am set to appear for my BTL1 in the coming week. Should I start prepping for CCD immediately after that? Or go for hack the box soc courses?

If you have the funds to do so and want to continue to upskill, I would say yes go for CCD however if you aren’t in the financial position to do so, I would take a look at CCDs syllabus and compare it with BTL1, learn the missing things via HTB / THM. More importantly, take a bit of time off after taking BTL1 before jumping into another test 😛

I agree with @MyDFIR about taking some time off to cool down. But if you’re eager to continue, CCD might be the best of both. It covers all the content from BTL1 and HTB CDSA but with much more in-depth details and challenging labs, which explains its cost. Also, they have created a supportive community that can be very beneficial. After I earned my certificate, I had many questions about my career, and one of their staff even helped review my CV. Plus, with the traction it’s gained recently (like being recognized by SANS DMA and featured at BlackHat), it looks like it will be the one that stands out when recruiters look for someone to hire.

@@MrsZia825 I was able to clear both my BTL1 and CDSA. :) Currently prepping for CCNA. I finally decided on appearing for my CCD by the end of this year and till then doing my CCNA, CYSA, & some unique projects by myself.

It’d be nice if people would actually do BTL1 before recommending it, at this point it’s just word of mouth what’s giving it’s popularity, I wish I hadn’t purchased that cert

Agreed - the ones I do recommend if I haven’t taken the training/certification, I look at the content itself and see if they are relevant to domain I know best (SOC). I wouldn’t recommend random trainings if I truly didn’t think it would provide value. I actually took BTLO back in 2020 when they were just starting out and enrolled simply for the content as I was curious to know what it was all about and it turned out to be pretty good for a junior SOC analyst. Out of curiosity, what made you wish you didn’t purchase the cert? Not enough value? Not what you were expecting?

@@MyDFIR Dang I wish I had seen that you replied to my comment. First of all thank you for your honesty. The content itself is not bad, really useful, it’s the content delivery what is extremely poor and not engaging at all. There are many issues that you don’t see until you purchase the cert and by them there’s no reimbursement. They do say they’re not a video based but boy were they right, Even some software walkthroughs are in pictures which I think those should definitely be video based like they do in some domains. Any way extremely disappointing cert

Have you considered doing a training-type of course or series that focused on learning SIEM/EDR etc for an entry level SOC? I would pay for that.

@@MyDFIR that would be great. I've been all over KZfaq and most everything is -how to get into cybersecurity - followed by cert videos, over and over again, and from the same people. But yeah, a number of certs could possibly invite an interview, but if the interviewee could explain how some of the SOC tools and processes work, in my opinion, that would be valuable. Also, you do a very good job in your explanations.
