Cybertrucks Don't Change The Narrative, Tesla Aptera Solar Car Is The Way To Go

By now you probably have heard that Tesla has recalled Cybertruck due to a defective accelerator pedal and in the process, the automaker confirmed having delivered at least 3,800 deliveries. I don't know if Tesla is going in the right direction. It should support Aptera instead, to develop affordable cars that a guy who washes the dishes in a local restaurant and his commute is only 3-5 miles away, can afford.

As a retiree, young people and us limited income retirees have the same problem. getting squeezed money wize. 5-6 years ago it was bearable to eat and buy a economy car. now I can barely aford to pay bills and feed myself and my wife. Your absolutely correct. I spend a lot of time trying to figure what to do to squeeze more out of every dollar I have. I am shure there are a lot of folks in my same boat. I am happy there are few million people that can afford Teslas and such, but then there is the rest of us that can't and sales figures are showing just that. Just saying.

Most EVs are sold to corporate fleets for various combinations of tax write offs, subsidies, carbon credits and ESG scores, it's 'the rest of us' that are paying for all that.

Tesla and other carmakers should know that fewer and fewer young people are buying cars because these days cars are too expensive. Insurance is too high, fuel cost is too high. So my advice for Tesla is this: build a vehicle that young people who might very well have a restaurant job washing dishes can afford. Outsource an engine .8 literish gasoline: kind of a motorcycle type engine that can do well at 'in town speeds up to 55mph. If you are a gas car maker, then make an affordable 35-40 MPG vehicle, that would mean a person working three miles from home could get back and forth to work for a small percentage of their income. Or keep making 50-60-70-150K expensive cars for the fast shrinking number of buyers.

I would recommend Tesla or another smart carmaker what they should really do is support Aptera. Aptera has a solar powered car. Build on it, make it more affordable in the range of $15,000-$20,000 price. Plus if you use it for only short commutes in town you never have to charge it.

Though I agree with your idea of using Aptera as an advanced construction method which can create a lighter car at possibly a lower price. Solar would have to be a bit larger to be as viable and it might be something Aptera could make for them. I have not heard or read Elon has said no to a personal vehicle? I do think since CES he needs a fleet of taxis to supply Las Vegas, to get some municipality approval process started above ground and replace the current fleet below ground. Along with expanding tunnels to the airport which will need more taxis for expansion to other hotels and resorts. I think this is a viable business for the Austin plant. The process for assembly of the two vehicles is similar and on the same platform. Once they do it in Austin, Tesla is better equipped to set up the full car plant in Mexico which will have some additional steps. It should create a no lose situation for Tesla in terms of growth for either segment. Which might have different demand cycles; retail vs fleet/commercial? From what I have seen recently they are looking for more commercial applications. Such as delivery vehicles in France using 2 passenger Y's with full carpeted flat area in car. Any weakness Tesla had in terms of demand for cars last year was replaced with Mega pack sales and home energy systems. Both have high subsidies for manufacturing batteries along with good margins. All of this leads to organic growth in the automotive business and expansion into other segments they have developed a major presence in the global market. Which will expand demand for it's batteries and management systems along with Peaker plants. What are the odds that Optimus will be built in the new south addition at Austin??

you get some. the aptera is mainly designed for efficiency. even without any solar charging, what you get from the grid literally goes farther in an aptera.

Aptera released their pricing back in 2019 and the cheapest is $25,900. They have not changed the pricing. With inflation and whatever else is going on there, thinking that it'll go down whenever they release it, is wishful thinking. The cheapest Aptera will be 250 mile range, up to 16 miles per day on solar (note: the up to) and FWD. Adjusting for inflation, that's just over $31.6K today. Then remember, there will be lots of people in front of you because they have reserved one. To get that cheap Aptera could be 2028 or beyond. If you wanted full solar, that's $26,800. Adjusting for inflation, that's $32,7K. Plus Apter has that caveat, "price subject to change". Since Aptera only has claims and hasn't had a third party to test out their claims, then it's just all that. At this point for a struggling young person, just buy a $15K nice used car and drive it, all while saving up your money for that cheap $31K Aptera you want in some distant future.

@@Torquenews - We don't know if Aptera will be a lower cost option. Only going by claims for Aptera as opposed to real world for Tesla. When Aptera comes out and can prove all of their claims, then Tesla would be interested.

@@nodemo2333 The current price was made up in 2019 and was unrealistic then, everything got much more expensive, yes batteries are down in price but not enough to make a real difference The price needs to go up 10k at least, or they will make a loss on every car made

Absolutely. Elon should support cheap cars. If it doesn’t legalize then tesla will have a factory ready to make functional robotaxis without buyers. Even if it works perfectly there will be hurdles. Elon plays it too risky. I am still vested. But. I started to diversify

The guy who washes dishes, and has a house with a garage and charger installation? He needs a used car that is fairly old but still reasonably dependable- i.e. not anything with a battery. There is a reason EVs are aimed at corporate fleet buyers and wealthy individuals, not many ordinary people can afford the inherent depreciation of a battery vehicle.

You don't have an EV do you? We are retired and our Tesla M3 has been the most reliable car I've ever owned, and I've owned a lot over 50 years. Our car is 6 years old with 68,000 mi and batteries are still at over 95% capacity as the original. We paid more up front, but with this car I've only had to change the cabin air filter, tires, and add windshield washing fluid although we live in a harsh environment with same climate as Alaska and lots of dirt/gravel roads. We charge 99% from home (free) from Solar PV on the roof. So although we paid $50k for an early version, and have saved an average $2,500/yr in fuel and maintenance costs over our previous Subaru Crosstrek (ave 32 mpg), or $15k over this time, which if you deduct this from the $50k, is what we paid for the Subaru. The Subaru depreciated 66% by the time it reached the same mileage as the Model 3, which is still at 50% of original value. Also, our Tesla is a better and safer car than when we purchased it thanks to over the air updates. Tesla depreciation has only recently gone up due to Tesla making the same car at lower prices plus the fed tax credit. I don't disagree that a used EV could be good for folks with lower incomes, like the Chevy Bolt or Nissan Leaf, depending on the range needed. We paid more for the long distance batteries and all wheel drive because we need both for where we live. Most of the attempts at EVs by the OEMs have been half-hearted at best just to meet fleet CAFE standards.

The thing is, 70% of the stored wealth in the U.S. is owned by the richest 10%, so Elon wants to make cash by selling the type of cars that people that have cash, like. The Cybertruck has that "wow" factor a rich person might like and choose over a Mercedes, BMW, Escalade or top of the line Ford Rapture. I don't think Elon ever cared about the mass adoption of EVs or climate change; that was just a sales pitch. Building a plasticky affordable car for the masses would make him little money and cheapen the Tesla brand compared to BMW. Hopefully someone like Kea will save the day and bring an affordable EV to the U.S.

Yeah check the prices for basic Teslas my guy. Your focus on Cybertruck is misplaced. Elon said that 25k car is not abandoned but here you are spreading more FUD. You are exactly what the Tesla community doesn’t need. Unsubscribed
