Drz400 is a fantastic bike, I’ve had one for a few years now, I got it with 1500 miles on it, now it has over 25,000 miles, I beat it to death and change the oil once a year and it’s never let me down, other than a frayed clutch cable, all I’ve replaced are tires, it’s a cheap and almost zero maintenance bike that’s super fun, I love my Yamaha fz07 but if I could only keep one bike, I’d keep the Drz

Definitely would not get your bike and go through the trouble of making an awesome bike into a supper mutto, that thing is an off road beast constant oil changes would be such a hassle for people that ride more than 300 miles just on a weekend. My DRZ400 is just fine being an old school carburetor bike it is a proven platform with many years to prove it, if the carb was the problem it wouldn’t sell for so long.

Those other two bikes aren't even in the same price range as the drz lol. I agree I wish they would have fuel injected it, but everything is cheap to replace on the drz400 because they have been around for a while. A big bore kit is dirt cheap lol and can be done at home. But I guess that depends on the person whether they pay shops to do work or do it themselves. Im less of a buy it and pay someone else to fix it and more of a get my hands dirty kind of guy.
@CycleCruza
@CycleCruza 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the DRZ is much cheaper and is easy to work on. I never understood why Suzuki didn't bring the FI over to the US. Probably because the bike is grandfathered in and they don't want to have to deal with meeting emissions standards bs. It keeps production cheap and they are still turning a profit.

Well a month ago i bought the 2021 DRZ 400sm and its my first bike. I really love it and it has a good low end power. Now the KLX 300sm came very close. I love the price of the klx, i like its a 6 speed , fuel injected and looks. Buut a couple things that made me buy the DRZ. 1) its been out a long time. All these years of fixing , trouble shoot , upgrades and knowledge is at ur finger tips. And the bike is tried and true. As for the klx its a new engine and not a whole lot of mods. And typically i avoid first model years of anything. 2) the DRZ is faster which is no brainier. From i heard the klx power is at the mid rage vs the low end power of the DRZ. 3) im a big guy. I weigh around 240 lbs and the DRZ can carry my fat ass with no problems lol. And i seen a video of the drz dual sport carrying a 300 lb man uphill offroad and in high attitude. That was the biggest sold for me. The klx i honestly dont know how good it will do with a heavy rider in highway speeds / just wiping around. Luckly the drz is been around to know its heavy friendly. Also the drz only weighs 20 lbs heaver then the klx which tbh is not really a big deal. Over all i dont regret getting a DRZ and its a bike i really recommend for any rider . plus not expensive to maintain. Also 3 bikers at work when i told them what type of bike i want. Im not joking but they said get the DRZ. Only 1 biker used to have a DRZ and the other 2 never owned one.

DRZ400SM is my 6th bike and one of if not my favorite so far. All my other bikes were 600’s and 1000’s. Loved the sport bikes but the DRZ allows me to do all the wheelie shenanigans I did on the sport bikes but on a much lighter bike that is a lot more fun around town and for a fraction of the cost. I’m liking it so much that I doubt I’ll ever get another sportbike. DRZ’s are where it’s at for being an urban hooligan on a reliable and affordable bike.

I'm a proud owner of a DrRZ400SM and that thing is bulletproof. Great for driving around town, but I live about 1h away from the mountain roads and it really gets old real fast! Once at the twisties it's pure adrenaline and fun, specially on technical sections. I'm looking into upgrading to an XR600R or an XR650R, not considering the KTM 690 as they have a bad reputation around this parts regarding reliability. I'm also lusting for that sweet 4 cylinder sound, so may as well get a super-naked hehehe

All I can say is, get a decent used DRZ 400sm, put the 440 Athena kit and FCR 39 pumper carb with a decent exhaust and you'll have anywhere ebetween 50 and 55 HP and the engine is bulletproof as long as you maintain it properly. It may be alittle heavier than some other supermotos but the weight helps with stability on the highway.

First of all, I would never even consider buying a bike WITHOUT a carburetor. I have 6 carbureted bikes and will be keeping all of them. No EFI for me. No BS either. And no "rider modes" Just NO computers PERIOD. I would love to have a Suzuki DRZ400SM, but I would need a ladder to get on and off it. And whatever you do, stay FAR away from European bikes. You think that Yamaha YZ is expensive to maintain? It's dirt cheap compared to European bikes.

@@rotay4900 European bikes have way more complicated computerized technology than Japanese bikes, and the quality is much worse. I'm talking about BMW, KTM, and Ducati in particular. Just find a list of bike brands rated by reliability. Yamaha will be at the top, and BMW will be at the bottom. Harley Davidson is right between the European brands and Japanese brands, but I ride one anyway, just because I like them. Mine is over 20 years old, one of the last EVO engined bikes they made, so it is a little more reliable than what they make today. Back in the '60s and early '70s, BMWs were very reliable. You're clueless dude. The magic of the DRZ is the fact that is super forgiving. I've owned two and trashed the hell out of both of them for a combined 30k miles in arguably the best overall riding this country has, the San Francisco Bay Area. In a tight and twisty. bumpy road you can disrespect that DRZ in a way a more powerful bike would never allow it. And I've raced amateur level supermoto [CRF250] and ridden tarded WR450's, EXC450's TE510 and 610's and LC4 and 690 Supermotos. Some might be faster in a straight line, but in the real world on real roads, especially if conditions are less than perfect the DRZ is way more efficient than stats on paper show. I stumble over your videos every few years or so and I always get annoyed at your dumb takes on motorcycles.

When I was shopping for a motorcycle last year, I watched a ton of your vids. Pretty much sold me on the super moto with your 2019 Yamaha conversion. I checked out all the SMs. Being 50 I wanted reliability number 1 so no mods. I want to keep it bone stock for reliability reasons. No pipe, no fuel management. I'll change the tires, but other than that, bone stoke. Here in Canuckistan we have chokes that help start it in the winter if your into that. The 6th gear thing.. okay I get it. Although I never had a 6th gear bike before so you don't miss what you never had. Cost difference is huge between models. Also in your MT-07 vid with the throttle by wire was a complete turn off for me. I like the snappy feel the cable gives. Annnyyy ways rambling on here. Just to give some small advice, all the maintenance that all racing bikes are suggested by the manufacturer is for racing purposes. I have put a oil cooler on my 2005 KTM EXC 525 & I ride about 1000 miles a year & the machine is as strong as it ever has been. I change the oil once a year. I had the machine die on me once, luckily not far from home & I couldn’t get it started again in the second year of ownership. I took it to my dealer & it just needed a valve adjustment. No damage was done & the mechanic said that most race bikes need that first adjustment early or the machine does what it did. So I asked when should I get it adjusted again? He said the minute it doesn’t want to start easy that that was the indicator for a valve adjustment. He also said that once the bike is broken in that it could be years before another adjustment would be needed. I haven’t had to get a valve adjustment since. So I asked him when would I need a new top end job? His answer was until I feel a power loss, which with the small amount of riding I do it could be years. Well I’m nearing 16000 miles, 16 years & it’s as strong as ever leaving sport bikes at every turn signal in my dust & they are dumb struck not believeing they just got smoked by a single cylinder dirt bike. Yes change your oil often, but an $100 oil cooler will extend your need for oil changes & give you peace of mind knowing the oil is a lot cooler & not breaking down chemically. It only adds maybe a pound of weight. You will not notice that pound. Again $100 of insurance & a machine that will last a long time with less maintenance!!!!

I picked up a 2021 DRZ400SM, first bike, I'm 6"6' and that's one of the main reasons I got it, I couldn't fit on even a KTM Duke 390. It's been an awesome bike. It's so much fun to wind it out on the backroads and still not really be going too fast to miss a corner. Yeah it's carbureted, but that also makes it easy to work on, even if you can't do it yourself, just about every shop knows a carb. And the price point and maintenance is also what attracted me. First time rider, the 701 I think is just too powerful for a beginner. That will be my next bike for sure, but the DRZ isn't a bad option at all for first time riders :)

I went to a Team Green test ride and I tested a Kawasaki 300 SM. It was a great little bike and I was VERY impressed with its cornering ability and agility .I think its weak point is its lack of power but for a beginner rider it is adequate. It may be a good trainer for a year before trading it in for a 690 or 701.

CYCLE Cruza, used to watch you & lost ya since your van build for the WR250 trips? Buying one of the 4 Big Brands based on your intent for riding and you really can't go wrong. Each brand has it's own strengths/weaknesses so after defining how you plan to use a bike, buy one. Then pick a channel who is doing the upgrades you want. Glad to have found you again...... peace

They actually can't fuel inject the DRZ model they would have to come out with a new model that is fuel injected because it is grandfathered in under certain statutes that restrict emissions on that model. As long as they keep it the same they can continue to reproduce it with upgrades only cosmetic. No chassis or engine mods are allowed to be made to the production model from the original

I think if we factoring in who really wants a supermoto motorcycle we basically unanimously agree the Drz is your best bet... Not everyone has the space, ability or budget to convert a bike to street legal, and while the KTM and Husky both have clearly better stats on paper, the cost is just on another level that just escapes too many peoples budget...

Never once in my life stranded by any carburetor on anything, been stranded by "black boxes" though, if adjustable a carburetor can limp it home better than an Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 Factory. Still, I hate carbs.

He's right there. If the battery is dead a FI with fuel pump, rail and pump plus computer ignition will not typically bump start or roll start. A carb has fuel in the bowl and will run long enough to get everything electrified. Very old tech though, from the days before batteries and alternators.

Bike lines under 800cc are cheaper to just end production and make a completely new bike, than change fuel, ignition or cooling concepts. For instance the Rebel was an 80s bike sold till 2016, then Honda just stopped building it, built a completely new 300cc and 500cc bike, but used the name.

Cycle i completely disagree with you , i bought a 2006 drz 400 with about 8500miles on it for 3k, bike looks new like it was ridden always street, mine is the s model for offroad, i bought a fxr 39 mx carb and a pipe and header and opened up airbox a little, i also pit a drz e header from the dirtbike model, man this thing is allot faster, wheelies up to 4th gear , not as fast as your yz450 but the bike only cost me 5k and it can hold its own it has a great fully adjustable suspension and for those who know carbs its easy to work on and the backed by lots of fans on forums, all in im at 5k you try to find a bike like my drz for 5k with the same performance and reliability, dont talk about no wr250r i smoke those easily and they are more expensive to buy too, 150cc more you can definately feel it in thw torque

That's awesome to see bikers who stay true to their bike for the long run. Honestly, I'm sorry I sold that cbr1000rr and XDiavel, however, I don't have a garage yet that has room fr multiple bikes. yeah I'm not a big fan of added electronics on bikes (except I love fuel injection), that's another reason I got the YZ450fx, although it does have wifi on the bike to adjust engine maps and keep track of the maintenance via smart phone (which I love), otherwise, it doesn't have all of the other fancy electronics and is pure motorcycle.
