This video is from the 2016 Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome Association's (CVSA) Bi-annual Conference. I was one of the guest speakers invited to share my story. The short version is that I grew up, graduated high school, went to college at the USAF Academy, flew fighter jets (A/OA-10 Warthogs) in the USAF for 20 years, my callsign is "XENA", I have CVS, and I am now retired. I am also an avid collector and user of Vera Bradley and I am passionate about a great many things. This is an intro to my story.

Hi Steven. You’re so welcome. I’m so very sorry to hear about your CVS diagnosis and especially that you’re having such a rough time right now. It’s an awful condition and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. I truly hope that you are getting good care and that you start to feel better very soon. Thank you so much for taking the time to reach out.

Oh my goodness I’m so sorry that I somehow missed this question. My sincere apologies for my delayed reply. Honestly too many times to count when it’s at its worst. First 4-6 hours are the most frequent vomiting then slows down to once every few hours but NOTHINg stays down. The more I try, the more I puke.

Dani thank you for the note. I’m so very sad to hear that you are suffering. Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome is a wretched and miserable condition and it’s certainly not a diagnosis I would wish on anyone! I do hope that you are able to find something that works for you to help prevent and/or abort your episodes. Bouncing back, being resilient, and staying as positive as possible will definitely help. I’m living proof. It is not an easy road, but you can do it! I wish you all the best now and always. If you haven’t already, I recommend checking out the Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome Association at cvsaonline.org. There is a patient and family conference every 2 years. Next will be in June 2020. Hope you can make it.

I didn't know anything about CVS when I started watching this. You did a great job of presenting how you have been affected by this diagnosis and definitely did it in a realistic but yet hopeful way. My military career ended due to my youngest daughter being born with Pierre Robin Sequence(recessed jaw, tongue falling back into the airway, cleft palate) so I realize how a diagnosis you didn't know existed can suddenly take front-and-center in your life! She's fine now, but along the way, I learned about trachs and feeding tubes--totally unexpected pathway in my life. But there has been much good that has happened along that pathway. Thanks for sharing this.

This video came up on my feed this morning. You had mentioned CVS on one of your LUG videos, which is why I started following you, as you began your LUG enthusiasm. I’ve never heard of CVS. So I was totally intrigued when this popped up. Xena/Michelle, what a warrior you truly are! Sometimes we watch influencers on KZfaq channels for whatever interests we’re into, never realizing that there’s decades of a real time life behind the speaker. Your career already has been an amazing accomplishment. So much training and discipline necessary in going into what you were as a pilot in air force, always desiring also in your pre-med education, training, and helping...all I just have to say I applaud you. If you were doing more of these type of videos to bring awareness to CVS, your adoring followers need and want to be aware.

I will continue to share as it seems appropriate and welcome others into my world beyond Vera & Lug. It's not about me, but about sharing information that might be useful to others. What a great and inspiring presentation! I'm so glad our common love for Lug connected us because as we've already discovered many times over, we have so many other things in common. Not CVS, but we both navigate through life with chronic, debilitating conditions. You've definitely lived one hell of a life already, and now it seems like you're on the path to another incredible chapter. One of hope, inspiration and connection.

Hi Gen. Thank you so very much! I'm glad that you watched and happy that we have connected!! Life with chronic illness can be miserable for sure, but it doesn't have to ruin us. I'm grateful for the many blessings I've enjoyed and thankful for all the new connections I'm making in so many different ways now. Life is funny sometimes and it's nice to be able to relate to another human being, even if you are strangers. Good to know you aren't alone and that others can relate. Hope you are doing well and enjoying fall :-)

@@WarthogPrincess Thanks, Xena! I've actually been doing much better as of late because after a gruelling 6 week adjustment period with ROUGH side effects, I have finally found at least one medication that works for me!!! (insert happy dance) Today was my birthday tea party which I had at one of my favourite parks. The day was absolutely gorgeous and a small group of my friends set up a socially distant circle. We had such a nice time. I'll post pics on the gram tomorrow. :) The tunnels can be long, dark, and frequent, but eventually there is light! Hooray for us!

I’ve watched you do your Lug bag reveals and just love them and always new you were AF from the pic on your wall and the name Warthog was my first clue you were a pilot. Our youngest son just got back from Al Jaber and Salim...wasn’t allowed to leave either base once due to COVID and he had his first 2 incoming missiles. The first was when I was FaceTiming him and he had his ear phones in (playing video games while chatting) and I heard the siren before he did and said you better go! That’s the fastest I’ve ever seen him move and the longest 45 min “of me crying” before he could call me back. He said the guys in the shelter were telling him that’s the 1 person you don’t want to be on the phone with when you have incoming. (I concur!!). Let’s just say it wasn’t a drill, so I’m so grateful for every military personnel no matter where they are based. He’s airfield Mgmt so I hear of the IFE’s etc. People don’t know those happen often, but with great pilots, like you, and mechanics, all I’ve heard of are good outcomes...although scary experiences for the flight crews. Wow, you are so inspirational and I’m glad you’re giving speeches for CVS syndrome in hopes of helping others get a faster and correct diagnosis. I live with Lupus and autoimmune pancreatitis so living with pain and still accomplishing everything you’ve done just boggles my mind! I’ve know what being on a PICC line is like and wouldn’t it be nice to have had a Lug bag to carry the TPN bag in. At least you’d be fashionable! I sure wish you didn’t have this awful disease, but I admire you soooo much for continuing with your dreams of flying, medical volunteering and I’m sure your good days are packed! I’ll be praying 🙏🏻 for a cure, better symptom Mgmt and last, but not least, thank you very much for your service to our country! 🇺🇸

WOW Debbie, I'm truly humbled by your comment. Thank you so much for taking the time to share. I'm very sorry that you had to go through all that with your son too. I guess in a way it is good so that you know what he is going through (or at least a part of it), but so traumatic to actually know in real time what he is going through!! The guys were totally spot on about their remark too -- Definitely the WORST possible time to be on the phone with your mom. Glad that he is okay and sounds like he is doing well. I've spent some time at Al Jaber AB and flew over Ali Al Salim but never stopped there. When I was in Kuwait (1998) we weren't allowed to leave the base either though obviously for completely different reasons. Either way, it's all about force protection and thankfully they have lots of ways for the folks to entertain themselves on base. Lug would've most definitely been a much more stylish way to carry my TPN but since I wasn't really going anywhere when on it, I suppose what I did have was just fine. The medical supply company actually provided me a backpack specially designed for just that and it worked great so I honestly have no complaints. At the time I had only barely just discovered Vera Bradley so I didn't even know what I was missing LOL. Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers and I return them to you with wishes for the same. I hope that you have more good days than bad and that 2021 is happy and healthy for you and yours. Best wishes!!

I wish the powerpoint slides were more visible/readable in the video, so it would be easier to follow along-nonetheless, I really appreciate you educating folks on your background and about a malady that I'd never heard of, knew nothing about. Whatever the reason, I’m happy that you found me. Thank you for taking the time to watch this video too. I apologize that the slides weren’t more visible. When my brother in law filmed this it was for me to see afterwards and wasn’t originally intended to be published. Turns out that it is quite useful and though not ideal I figured it was sufficient enough to get the point across and help to get the word out. I sincerely appreciate that you took the time to also provide feedback. Best wishes now and always!!
