Great stuff guys! I've done a drill exactly like this while studying Filipino martial arts (kali / arnis). Amazing, the similarities.

You can change the distance on the riposte (counter attack) as well.

Hah, first thing that came to my mind when I saw this strange "feder-sabres" was "Hah, Tyrant had to be involved in creating this!" and then I saw the name of the sabre model in the description lol But I have to tell they look absolutely bizarre. Is there a chance you'll make a review of them?

Could you apply Fiore's one-handed longsword systems into arming sword combat? Also what are the rules about wrestling, disarms, and other close-quarters weapon combat? I'm really interested in Fiore's Armizare as well as Figueirdo's 16 rules of the montante and I'd like to know about the legalities related to Fiore style throws in longsword and dagger.

Yes, you can absolutely use those Fiore plays with an arming sword. When you ask about rules for wrestling you have to be a little more specific. Historical legal codes? Modern tournament rule-set?

Modern tournament rules. I'm also having problems with finding a club. I live in South Wales and the two nearest clubs are Virtus Sword School who teaches German longsword and one in Newport who I think is part of the Academy of Historical Fencing. Cardiff is nearest of the two but I feel like I'm going to have problems with sparring as I am more familiar with Fiore's arts and Newport is a bit of a journey in comparison and I don't know what they'd teach

Wrestling and disarms are allowed in every HEMA tournament that I know of. Some events have restrictions on the type of takedowns/throws that are allowed for safety/insurance reasons.

Sean Franklin I've been looking more into Fiore's one-hand techniques and it seems quite unfair to apply in tournaments like Longpoint for the opponent because you're batting your foe's blade away and then pacifying their combat arm, leaving no way to retaliate, and then finishing them. Then again, on the other side, you'd be hard to beat and who said fighting's fair? But eventually, you'd become predictable

It is any real need to use toy wooden hacksaws as a training sabers, if you actually have good training sabers, metall and synthetics?

what is the best way to do solo practice with a longsword? I'm quite new to hema and don't have a hema club near me and was wanting to practice or learn technique

I recommend the book "The Medieval Longsword: Volume two" by Guy Windsor. It's a good introductory book to longsword theory and beginners practice routines.

Bror Kriger One of the things my instructor Rob recommend our class do as a solo Longsword excerise is the "Dobringer Flourish" from the treatise people like to call the "Codex Dobringer"... it's real name is a complicated mess of Roman numerals and numbers, it's a set of techiniques that you can preform solo, similar to a kata in Kenjutsu, simulating a scenario where you're fighting four opponents in a narrow street. It's a short little excerise that helps you practice voiding, Zwerchaus from both sides, Krumpaus from both sides, thrusts from plow and ox, the snapping cut and footwork. Specifically the version we use is the Keith Farrell interpretation, look up Dobringer Flourish Keith Farrell interpretation and you'll find it.

Just a quick question, why should we not hop ?
@seanfranklin1591
@seanfranklin1591 7 жыл бұрын
During the time you are in the air you are completely out of control of your actions. You can't exert any force on the ground to change directions, you can't properly engage your body to do a real cut (as opposed to a touch) and god help you if your opponent rushes into a grapple. :)

Sean Franklin Having practiced various unarmed martial arts for a while I'd tend to disagree with most of those points, unless you hop very high, (or in any very strange way) you tend to be more mobile and therefore control the distance better (which is why it's often seen in combat sports), which can help against grapplers, besides, no matter how you move your feet, it doesn't affect your ability to use your hand to keep distance with an opponent or start a sprawl if he dives for a tackle. That being said, I have no experience in armed martial arts, and I believe you when you say you can't do a real cut without being well grounded, and I'm also willing to believe that with a sword you need to be well grounded to do parries, which you don't really need barehanded.
