Dussack sparring - Michael v Nick

The first test of the Landsknecht Emporium Dorotheas after recent modifications we made and outlined in a recent video. These swords are full and accurate weight handling to the original 16th and 17th century dussack or tessack/tessak.

I love the dussack, and would love a video talking about how it compares to saber, since the weapons have such similarity in form and appearance, while obviously the plays are from different eras. (I don't know saber.) I'd love to encourage more of this weapon on your channel!

dussack style sparring looks a lot more graphic than a lot of other sabre systems, beautiful bladework!

I guess most of sabers from 16 to 18 century was used similarly to dussak

Thx for the nice bouts👍. I'd like to know how your modified doros compare to the standart ones and also to other training sabers.

I outlined the modifications in the video below. As for how they compare to other training sabres - the modified ones are now fairly similar to a Polish sabre from Regenyei, and a little bit heavier than a BF stirrup hilt sabre. Of course the total weight is higher again due to the hilt. They are slow compared to those sabres, but also far more protective. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h59lfbWQ056YqIU.html

How does fencing with steel dussacks compare to fencing with leather or synthetic trainers? I've only fenced once with Dussacks (leather), and quickly found that the best strategy at the time was quick sniping shots from a Luginsland position. However, from watching this video, I strongly suspect that the added weight of a more realistic trainer would bar that strategy very quickly.

It is hugely different, especially when most of the synthetic and leather models are just so light and fast. These are not good for the sniping attacks at all, and they are slow to change direction in many cases.

Are those steel dussack trainers or just Saber trainers?

Steel dussack trainers, though frankly the line blurs between dussack and many sabres, because dussack really is a form of sabre (or cutlass/hanger in the shortest examples). But it has the protection and thumb ring that is typical of a dussack.

Out of curiosity, what was it about the originals that you didnt like/what did you alter?

It is outlined in the video below, but in short, they are not very representative of the typical form of dussack, including the Norwegian museum examples they were based. They have too much mass in the tip, especially for their quite long length, making them lack agility and also hit excessively hard, and also they do not have the room for suitable HEMA clubs which they need. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h59lfbWQ056YqIU.html

It's os a similar size, but heavier all over. Yes you can use it like a sabre. Dussack really is an early infantry sabre, they just often are a good bit slower in many actions.

We are using the ones linked below. Though it is worth mentioning that they eneded mods to handle better and fit gloves in as I outline in the bottom video.
