Cycling 70km Across 6 Islands In Japan | Shimanami Kaido Travel Guide

Shimanami Kaido is one of Japan's most famous cycling routes connecting the main island Honshu with Shikoku.
Ever since I heard about this bikeway a few months ago, I knew I had to travel there some day to experience it for myself!!
So, I packed up my bags, bought a Shinkansen ticket and took a spontaneous trip down to Onomichi, Hiroshima.
Shimanami Kaido Bikeway runs between Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture and Imabari in Ehime Prefecture, hopping across 6 islands of the Seto Inland Sea.
You can start your journey from either the Hiroshima side or the Ehime side. I started from the Hiroshima side because the views get better and better as you go along towards Ehime.

The Japanese people are soooo kind! The first woman took strangers in as guests into her home. The second woman was handing out sweet lemons for the bikers. And the third shared tons of her fruits! I really, really want to live there! (I live in Hawaii, and lots of Japanese people live, or visit here and they are incredibly polite, peaceful people! A lot of the videos I make are heavily influenced by you! 💕)

I have visited Japan four times now and yes there are bad people in every culture but I am still yet to find them in Japan. Amazing food, people and culture, even in the big cities. Cheers.

The hospitality, generosity, kindness and compassion for others that everyone has on those islands in mind blowing to me. Where I'm from it's difficult to even find someone to hold a door for you. So many locals going out of their way to meet you, encourage you and just take care of you is so heart warming. Also, waking up to that country side, what a dream that would be. Thank you for these wonderful videos, Where can I rent an obaachan? lol

My guess wasn’t that off! 🙌🏼😁 I'm glad you were offered accommodation, that was very kind of them. And speaking of kindness, the whole trip was full of it: the people that offered you a place to stay the night, the obaachan that offers frozen lemons with honey and the obaachan who gifted you the lemons in the way up the hill; it warmed my heart...❤️😭 Those islands are as beautiful as the people that live there...👌🏼☺️❤️ In the long term I want to go to Japan in the near future, I've started saving money for the trip and I've been studying some japanese in my spare time. Before 2017 ends I want to spend time with friends and family that I haven't seen in a long time...

I cycled in Japan for 7 weeks last century and finally made the time in 2018, i returned, cycling the Shimanami kaido and some of the ohenro in Shikoku for 3 weeks. Love japan, the people, food, onsen, scenery and nature which are all covered in your well presented vlog. Only trouble is when i return home my heart breaks a bit but slowly mends thanks to travel vlogs like yours and my dream of returning to travel in the land of the rising sun :)

This is exactly why I love going off the beaten track of Japan. You find the most beautiful of sceneries and the nicest of people! Everyone that you met seemed so lovely and I am hopeful to have as great of an experience when I do the Shimanami Kaido myself.

The islands were scenic and beautiful, but personally the most beautiful scenery was the people involved like the obaa-chan who took care of the orange grove. Really motivating video for people to go out and travel, meet new people and gain experiences you otherwise would have never cherished.

I love how everyday people in Japan can be so nice and welcoming to visitors. When I visited in March, a nice older woman (obaasan? I'm still learning, so I'm not sure) explained the difference between the cherry and plum trees that were flowering at one of the local temples. She didn't work there; she was just a citizen being nice and helpful. It made me tear up that she would be so nice to a stranger. The thing I want to do someday (besides go back to Japan for a longer stay - maybe for work!) is go on a multi-day hiking trip. I've done 2-3 days, but I would like to do something out in the woods for a week or more.

Wow, thanks for the pep talk at the end of the video. I've been thinking about booking time off from work to take my dream trip to Japan for a few years now and after watching this I handed in my holiday form at work and managed to get time off for a few weeks at the end of October next year. I think all of your videos have helped inspire me to do this but the talk at the end of this video just made me realise if I want to do something I just need to do it and stop thinking about it. Great Video! I had some experiences similar to you.During a trip around Shikoku, I had an opportunity to talk with a woman who cultivates Ehime Mikan when I was walking near her orchard by chance.After spending good time and before I left her, she gave me fourty pieces of oranges.Fourty!! Very Delicious but a little heavy to carry by hand.

I was able to manage a short trip through Shimanami Kaido this September and, even though I went on a bus, I was really stunned by the amazing views! My god, everything there is amazing tbh. Seeing this video made me want to go back even more!! Thanks for the great videos :)

What an exciting beautiful bike trip you had. The views were gorgeous and the locals so kind. I was a little late in viewing the videos but glad I didn't have to wait long to find out what happen. The cliffhanger in the first video was a good one. I know I won't be able go anywhere by the end of this year but hopefully Japan in 2019. a route that visits some of my favorite places, but I've never done it on a bicycle. Very nice! I live in Wisconsin (USA) but my son lives on Shikoku in a suburb of Tokushima (Aizumi).
