Shimanami Kaido is one of Japan's most famous cycling routes connecting the main island Honshu with Shikoku.
Ever since I heard about this bikeway a few months ago, I knew I had to travel there some day to experience it for myself!!
So, I packed up my bags, bought a Shinkansen ticket and took a spontaneous trip down to Onomichi, Hiroshima.
Shimanami Kaido Bikeway runs between Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture and Imabari in Ehime Prefecture, hopping across 6 islands of the Seto Inland Sea.
You can start your journey from either the Hiroshima side or the Ehime side. I started from the Hiroshima side because the views get better and better as you go along towards Ehime.
So, hope you enjoy the new adventure with me and let me know in the comments something you have always wanted to do!! And then MAKE time for it and actually go do it! :D

Wow, the lady is sooooo nice in her pursuit to try to find a place for you to stay the night. The kind of hospitality that you'd only find in Japan I guess! Can't wait for the next episode!

You can probably finish riding through all 6 islands at a reasonable pace if you start at dawn. I dont understand why you would ride into the night at a later hour, and not book ahead a place to stay. This was poor planning. Could be dangerous. Just saying. Now I have to watch the 2nd part lol

I cycled from Onomichi to Imabari in one day last year. Even an experienced cyclist would take 8 hours to do that and I'm not a fit person so it took me 11 hours to complete, including 1.5 hour *not wasted* because I went to a wrong way but man the view was so beautiful! And no, you really can't do that in one day with that "basket bike". You need a bike with gearboxes and stuff. Here are some tips if anyone want to try it as an visitor: - Schedule at least 2 days so you may fully enjoy the trip. You can book accommodation on one of the islands - Don't bring extra stuff with you. There are luggage forward service near Onomichi station. Or you can send your luggage through Yamato Transport "Black cat" express to your next stop with reasonable price. - Don't need to worry about food and water. There are unlimited amount of vending machines, convenience stores, and restaurants along the way. - Don't push yourself too hard early in the trip. The accenting to bridges between islands are really loooong and you will do that each and every islands so take your time. - Not every island has beautiful view some of them looks like beaten up town. Don't worry about it just follow the blue strip on the road. - Near the end there is a really nice "surprise" decenting. I'm not going spoil it and I'm sure Angela will show it on the next video. That's all folks! You really should try Shimanami Kaido at least once if you like traveling. It's a very unique experience and I highly recommend it.

That helpful lady is heaven sent. And the best part is... that's common in Japan. Japanese people are naturally polite, disciplined, warm, and super helpful. The go-out-of-their-way helpful. That, and their beautiful country makes keep coming back to Japan.

Did this last year in spring. Only went for a one-day ride and managed about 30 km (with plenty of stops to enjoy the amazing sights) and it was hands down my favourite part of the whole trip to Japan. One warning though for anyone thinking about doing this. I went in March so I didn't think sunburn would become an issue, especially seeing as I was wearing a long sleeve sweater (weather was fairly cold) and a helmet that shielded my face from the sun. Completely forgot about my hands however! After 8 hours more or less straight sunlight I had the WORST sunburn which turned into painful blisters the next day >.< Let my mistake be a lesson to y'all.
